Summary:

Steady (~0.5 sec) 5 MW EDA H-modes were achieved (1030605029 and 030)
for the first time. Higher power shorter (<0.1 sec) H-modes were also
achieved. The overall plasma performance was moderate. H-factors
~1.5 were typical and the maximum stored energy for the day was ~195
kJ. There have been 3 MW discharges in the past that had > 200
kJ. High performance at high current and density will take some shot
development.

RF pulse length and total power level were paced by D and J-port
antennas. An on-going problem with D-port power feedback limited its
power level to ~1 MW. The temporary solution was to run the feedback
open loop. For J-port, 2 MW, 0.5 sec pulses have become more
reliable, but high powers still had multiple faults. At 2.7 MW
(1030605016), the pulse length is currently ~0.3 sec and for 3.2 MW
the pulse length is ~0.08 sec. The conditioning progress is better
than after the first boronization and the system appears to be
improving. Additional operation may result in even higher power, 0.5
sec pulses. Record J-port power level was achieved for short (0.08
sec) pulses for the first time as well. In shot 012, J3 was run at
1.6 MW without injection without J4 powered. In the past this type of
operation has led to injections.

Additional RF Notes:

At high power on D, the voltage and Vmax derived from DC2 diverge and
the power is likely to run uncontrolled.

Swapped modulator boards in D and E. D-port still ran uncontrolled
but E-port was fine. To have some reliable control of the power,
FMIT#1 was run open loop and it behaved better. For steady targets,
the output power will be fairly steady but varying loads will result
in varying output power.

Run 1030605 High RF Power

The machine ran extremely well today with no duds or fizzles and 29
plasmas. Two disruptions, shots 18 and 19, were caused by the
mysterious injections from the divertor. Shot 18 ran nearly 1.3 s
before disrupting, while 19 only ran only 0.6 s. So we waited 20
minutes before taking shot 20, and also did 5 minutes of ECDC. Either
the ECDC, or the wait, or random events helped as we did not have
another disruption.

A major result of the run was obtaining reliable operation at 5 MW
using all three antennas. On shot 22, going against the advice of
the PO, the SL decreased the current from 1 MA to 0.8 MA. This
change allowed us to get a sustained EDA mode. By shot 28 the rf
had been tuned up to get pretty clean 4.5 MW rf pulses. By shot 30
nearly 5 MW of power was coupled with only one interrupt on j-port.

On shot 15 we had 195 kJ of stored energy with an rf power level of 5
MW. Though this was a fairly high stored energy for recent operation,
we have obtained over 200 kJ at 3 MW of rf in the past. So a careful
study of stored energy with rf power should be a high priority now
that the rf is working well.

The non-axisymmetric control coils were used from shot 7 onward.


Problems
--------

EF3 failed to go on shot 6. Still having problems with d-port rf power
control. The feedback link was cut part way though the run, and the power
level was controlled directly. It took several visits to the power room to
get the a-coils running.
