| Run summary for 1030606 - JET dimensionless identity expt. (MP 315) Run Plan The run is a continuation of the run 1021104. The goal is to finish density/power scan that we did not complete on that day plus to study possible dependence of the H-mode character (EDAness) on plasma shape by doing a smooth transition from JET shape to "standard" C-Mod shape. On 1021104 good match was obtained for shape and plasma parameters (Ip and Bt). RF had troubles heating high density plasmas (with nl above 1e20) in JET configuration, so very limited density and temperature scan was done. Besides, the walls were not connditioned on that day and it was not clear wether we could not achieve a good EDA because of the wall conditions or because we ran JET shape. Summary: We started with shot 1021104031 that has a good shape and current/field match. Reprogram target density to 0.8e20. With 2 MW of RF we got good H-mode with EDA interrupted by bursts of ELMs. It is not clear whether this behavior is due to a peculiar shape or a position of strike point which is on the very top of the divertor nose. Increasing target density to 1e20 turns out to be a problem for RF. When we finally got steady 2MW of RF power on shot 9 no H-mode was produced. Aparently, L-H threshold is higher in this configuration than in our regular shape. Attempting higher RF power lead to short H-mode on shot 10. Finaly, on shot 15 a "long" H-mode was obtained with RF around 2.5 MW. An attempt to heat the plasma into H-mode at target density of 1.2e20 failed miserably. After 4 unsuccesful shots we turned back to 0.8e20 and did the power scan. The H-mode scenario at nl=0.8e20 looks like the following: High RF power heats the plasma into H-mode. Pedestal and core temperature rise and the QC mode appears at the edge. At the same time radiated power rises very fast, leading to collapse of both core and pedestal temperature. The QC mode terminates and we get a burst of type III ELMs. During the ELMy period impurity confinement deteriorates, radiated power drops and RF heats the edge again into QC mode regime. Then the cycle repeats. We attempted a power scan to cover a range of pedestal temperatures. Pedestal temperature does not change much apart from the first few points in EDA while radiation is still low. At high power the radiation rises faster and H-mode terminates before it has a chance to go to type III ELMs. There is only one instance of the EDA/typeIII cycle in the second H-mode on shot 22. Having done the RF scan we moved to the next part of the proposal and tried to establish whether the observed behavior is due to JET shape (or location of strike points) and changed lower triangularity to 0.5 by moving RXL in 1.5 cm (shot 23). Neither that, not changing minor radius back to .22 (shot 24) produced any positive changes in H-mode character. Loading "standard" C-Mod configuration from shot 1030605030 on shot 26 did not help. The H-modes are still not clear EDAs but short ELM-free with sometimes present QC mode interrupted by bursts of ELMs. The only possible explanation is that this behavior is caused by excessive impurities that we stured up by moving the strike point up the divertor nose earlier. It means that the behavior observed on JET is not typical to the JET shape but rather caused by impurities. That is actually a positive result since it probably means that something like an EDA could be obtained on JET if walls were cleaner. Having done everything we could for JET similarity experiment by 15:00 we decided to switch to the MP on triggering ELMs by current rise that is scheduled for next week. This attempt was generally not succesful. We tried current ramps with various ramp rate during H-mode but were not able to produce ELMs. It seems that current rise actually kills H-mode as soon as it starts. Further analysis of the shots is necessary to develop the further startegy for the experiment. Results-------------------------------------------------------------------- The run started with MP315. To start the run, segment 2 was loaded from 1021104031 and segment 1 was loaded from 1030605030 -- one of the many good shots from the previous day. Only the density was changed for this first shot, nl_04 = 0.8e+20. The shape was modified slightly for shot 002 to better match the JET shape required. Other than some simple changes in density and shape tweaks, the discharge remained the same through shot 025. The next major operation changed occurred at shot 028. Segment 2 was loaded from 1030530021 and a current pulse was added to attempt to make some progress on MP292 before its scheduled run day next week. The last shots of the day involved changes in the current pulse. Varying the rise time and the fall time. See session leader report for details. C-Mod ran quite well throughout the day. The startup went untouched although there was an x-ray burst early that should have been addressed for the benefit of the commissioning of the new x-ray diagnostic. There were no fizzles or duds. The three disruptions toward the end of the day were due to the current pulse. RF had troubles heating high density plasmas (with nl above 1e20) in JET configuration, so very limited density and temperature scan was done. Besides, the walls were not connditioned on that day and it was not clear wether we could not achieve a good EDA because of the wall conditions or because we ran JET shape. We will start with shot 1021104031 that has a good shape and current/field match. Reprogram target density to 0.8e20. Step RF power up from 1 MW to 3 MW in 0.5 MW steps - 5 shots Increase target density from 0.8e20 to 2e20 in 0.4 e20 steps, repeating power scan for every density - 15 shots minimum Find best match to JET H-mode and increase lower triangularity watching for changes in H-mode character. | |
