| Session Leader Run Summary for 1030610 MP303 High Performance ITBs Precious few ITBs were obtained, shots 14, 16, 18 and 24, and none would qualify as high performance. The discharges were plagued by repeated H-L transitions which prevented the ITBs from developing. The RF performed very well with many shots over 3.5 MW. The H/D ratio was not too bad, but Mo levels were somewhat high. The best ITB was on shot 14 at 4.5T, but was it high performance? Not with an H-factor of .82 it wasn't. The other decent ITB was on shot 24 at 6.4T, which exhibited a very narrow density and x-ray peaking, as was seen last year. Was shot 24 high performance? Not with an H-factor of .85 it wasn't. We were barely able to produce any ITBs, let alone decent ones, let alone high performance ones. |

| Physics operator summary for run 1030610 (Tuesday): MP 303 - High Performance ITB's Session leader: J. Rice Physics operator: R. Granetz Engineers in charge: Summary: We got some short H-mode ITB's with inboard-side resonance on shots 14, 16, 17, and 18 (4.5 T, 0.8 MA, Prf=3.4 MW). We then switched to 6.4 T to do outboard-side resonance on shots 20 and 24. We got full-length plasmas on both shots, but the TF crowbarred both times, necessitating long delays and multiple TF-only test shots. Nevertheless, I think shot 24 had a long ITB (t=1.3-1.5 s). The x-ray profile was very narrow, and the Thomson profiles were peaked, but over a very small radius (consistent with John Rice's previous observations.) Other than the crowbars, the machine ran well. There were no fizzles or duds, and all shots had full rampdowns. There were no disruptions. After shot 20, the network server for the paragon stations crashed, necessitating a reboot of all the paragon stations. Scorecard: 21 plasmas 0 fizzles 0 duds 6 test or no-power shot cycle 0 aborted and/or screwed up by computer problems ---------- 27 total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Engineering setup for Tuesday, 10 June 2003 Purpose: MP 303 - High Performance ITB's Session leader: J. Rice Physics operator: R. Granetz ECDC overnight in D2 at 2e-4 Torr, stopping by 07:00. Bake at 60 C overnight as well, if possible. Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00. If RF has fired into the vacuum chamber prior to the start of the run, then we will need to do 10 minutes of ECDC before the first shot. Power systems the same as on 1030605028 (0.8 MA, 5.4 T, lower single null) A-coils should be hooked up as on 1030507027 (+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot), but the power supply should NOT be enabled. Gas setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) fill B-side upper with 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) (for ECDC) fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, DNB ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RF Setup: All 4 transmitters in Run On by 08:00. We want 5 MW today. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run Plan: Start by getting good ITB's at 4.5 T, 0.8 MA, and 5 MW of ICRF (off-axis on inboard side) At some point we will switch to 6.1 T, 1.2 MA, and 5 MW (off-axis on outboard side) to get high performance ITB's. (A-coils will be needed for the 1.2 MA discharges.) Obtain high quality Te, Ti, ne, and Vtor profiles. Vary DNB timing relative to the ITB evolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ECDC was done overnight, as well as a 60 C bake. Hybrid coldstart done by the engineering group; no errors found Loaded PCS segment 2 from shot 1030605028 (0.8 MA, 5.4 T, single null lower), segment 1 from shot 1030606035 (last shot from last Friday). Changed BT to be 4.5 T (125 kA) in segment 2. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shot 01 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=0.5+1.5+0=2 MW (D+E+J). Btor=4.58 T. Ip=0.8 MA. Target nl_04=0.9e20 m-2. Great startup, even though Br0=-2.6 mT ! No early hard x-rays. John thinks there was an ITB (inboard resonance), but the core Thomson was not on for the first shot. It will be on for the 2nd shot. GPC2 needs to be recalibrated. Next shot: increase argon puff by 10 ms. More RF power. Shot 02 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=0.5+1.5+0=2 MW. Horrible startup, huge Br0, some hard x-rays, almost lost it. H/D=4-8%. Next shot: increase Br0 by 0.25 mT (to 0.000 T) Shot 03 -- Plasma. Good shot. Good startup. Prf=0.6+1.4+1.6=3.1 MW. No ITB's except at H-L back transitions. Now have my peaking scope working with both ne0/nebar and xray_width. Next shot: no PCS changes. More RF power. Shot 04 -- Plasma. Good shot. Good startup. Prf=0.7+1.4+1.1=3.2 MW. Still no ITB's except at H-L back transitions. Next shot: raise density by 10% (0.8e20 --> 0.9e20 m-2) Shot 05 -- No-power cycle. TCI failed before the shot, so I opted to turn off the supplies rather than a wide open gas valve. Shot 06 -- Plasma. Good Shot. Startup was not as good as shot 04. Target nl_04=1.0e20 m-2. Some hard x-rays. Still no ITB's except for H-L back transitions. Next shot: no PCS changes Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=0.8+1.7+~0 = 2.5 MW. Still only have the H-L back transition ITB's. Startup is not great, with some hard x-rays. Next shot: reduce Btor by 2% (from 4.58 to 4.50 T) Shot 08 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=4.50 T. No TCI data (camac problem), so no ne peaking, but x-ray width indicates that ITB's formed before the H-L back transitions, finally! Prf=0.9+1.5+~0=2.4 MW. One of the TF joints is showing a high temperature. Next shot: TF-only test shot (5.4 T) to check joint temperature. Shot 09 -- Test. 5.4 tesla TF-only shot to check joint resistance. Seems to be okay on the TF scanner. Next shot: back to plasma operation Shot 10 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=4.51 T. No H-mode ITB's. Prf=0.9+1.4+1.1=3.4 MW. H/D=4-6%. Next shot: no PCS changes. Shot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=3.3 MW. No H-mode ITB's. H/D=6%. Next shot: raise density another 10%. Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. nl_04=1.1e20 m-2. Prf=0+1.5+0=1.5 MW, so only got one H-mode. Great startup; no hard x-rays. Next shot: no PCS changes. Shot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=1.0+1.5+0=2.5 MW. H/D=4-6%. Good startup. No H-mode ITB's. Next shot: no PCS changes. Shot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot. Got a good ITB on the 2nd H-mode! Good startup. Prf=0.9+1.4+1.1=3.4 MW. H/D=4-5%. Next shot: reduce Btor by another 1% (I_TF=121500 A). Increase argon puff by another 10 ms. Shot 15 -- Plasma. Good shot. No H-mode ITB's Prf=0.9+1.4+1.1=3.4 MW. H/D=4-6%. Good startup. Next shot: add the 1% back to Btor. Shot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot. Got another ITB on the final H-mode! Prf=1.0+1.4+1.0=3.4 MW. H/D=4-6%. Good startup. Next shot: no PCS changes. Shot 17 -- Plasma. Good shot. Got another ITB on the final H-mode. Prf=1.0+1.4+1.0=3.4 MW. H/D=4-6%. Good startup. Next shot: no PCS changes. Shot 18 -- Plasma. Good shot. Another H-mode ITB, but not as clear as the previous ones today. Prf=1.0+1.4+1.0=3.4 MW. H/D=6%. Next shot: no PCS changes. The DNB is firing at t=1.35 s. Shot 19 -- Plasma. Good shot. Bad startup, lots of hard x-rays. TCI failed on channel 4. Density feedback failed. J-port RF dropped out early. No ITBs. Next shot: go to other half of the MP. Raise Bt to 6.4 T, Ip to 0.9 MA. Decrease density to nl_04=0.8e20 m-2. Shot 20 -- Plasma. Full-length shot, but TF crowbarred. Bt=6.4 T, Ip=0.9 MA. TCI failed again -- no feedback, so density was too high. Prf=3.3 --> 2 --> 1 MW. Multiple H-modes, but no ITB's. The paragon server node crashed, so all of the paragon PC's will have to be rebooted before the next shot. The DNB suddenly developed a problem with the beam current signal. Next shot: TF-only test. Shot 21 -- Test. TF-only, 50 kA. OK Next shot: 150 kA TF-only test. Shot 22 -- No power. Should have been a 150 kA TF-only test. Next shot: 150 kA TF-only test. Shot 23 -- Test. TF-only, 150 kA. OK Next shot: back to 6.4 T plasma operation Shot 24 -- Plasma. Good shot, but the TF crowbarred again. BT=6.4 T, Ip=0.9 MA, Prf=~0 + 1.4+1.1=2.5 MW. H/D=7%. I think this had a long ITB (from 1.3 to 1.5 s) during the H-mode, judging from the x-ray peaking. Dmitri reports that the Thomson shows a very small diameter peaked region. Next shot: 50 kA TF-only test. Shot 25 -- Test. 50 kA TF-only test. OK Next shot: plasma, with Bt=5.4 T, Ip=0.8 MA Shot 26 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=5.4 T, Ip=0.8 MA, nl (target) = 0.9e20 m-2 Prf=0.5+1.4+1.1=3.0 MW. H/D=6-8%. H-modes, no ITBs. Next shot: get a start on tomorrow's run. Load segment 2 from 1030529016, except reduce nl_04 to 1.0e20 m-2, and turn on the A-coils in the normal suppression configuration. Bt=5.4 T, Ip=1.0 MA. Shot 27 -- Plasma. Good shot. Bt=5.4, Ip=1.0 MA, nl(target)=1.1e20 m-2, and Prf=3.0-3.6 MW. Lots of short (ELM-free?) H-modes. Startup was bad though. End of run. |

| Jun 10 2003 03:33:25:360PM | 1030610022 | Robert Granetz | Shot 22 -- No power. Should have been a 150 kA TF-only test. Next shot: 150 kA TF-only test. |
| Jun 10 2003 03:39:43:603PM | 1030610023 | Robert Granetz | Shot 23 -- Test. TF-only, 150 kA. OK Next shot: back to 6.4 T plasma operation |
| Jun 10 2003 04:33:20:363PM | 1030610024 | Robert Granetz | Shot 24 -- Plasma. |
| Jun 10 2003 04:34:27:977PM | 1030610025 | Robert Granetz | Shot 25 -- Test. 50 kA TF-only test. OK Next shot: plasma, with Bt=5.4 T, Ip=0.8 MA |
| Jun 10 2003 04:51:03:773PM | 1030610026 | Robert Granetz | Shot 26 -- Plasma. |
| Jun 10 2003 05:14:29:317PM | 1030610027 | Robert Granetz | Shot 27 -- Plasma. Good shot. Bt=5.4, Ip=1.0 MA, nl(target)=1.1e20 m-2, and Prf=3.0-3.6 MW. Lots of short (ELM-free?) H-modes. Startup was bad though. End of run. |
| Jun 10 2003 05:15:18:130PM | 1030610027 | Robert Granetz | Physics operator summary for run 1030610 (Tuesday): MP 303 - High Performance ITB's Session leader: J. Scorecard: 21 plasmas 0 fizzles 0 duds 6 test or no-power shot cycle 0 aborted and/or screwed up by computer problems ---------- 27 total |
