| Session Leader run summary 1030617 MP 318 High performance at 5 Tesla SL Marmar PO Rowan Plan: Attempt ~4 MW RF, at relatively low density, starting with 600 kA shot like 1030530027. Do a current scan, possibly changing density to keep n/n_G ~ constant. This run was carried out the day after a boronization. Results: We got data with 4MW ICRF at 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 MA. The best performance, in terms of H-factor, was achieved at target nl_04 ~ 6e19, 0.8 MA, 4 MW RF, with >150 kJ on shots 20, 21 and 23. Shot 20 disrupted at the time of peak stored energy. In the other cases, Wtot and neutron rate started drooping as radiated power increased. H-factors were close to 2, at least around the time of dW/dt = 0, assuming 95% absorption of rf power into thermal plasma. RF trip dW/dt analysis could be done on a number of these shots. Going to 1 MA did not increase performance, with the best shot being 28, giving W_max = 153 kJ, at target nl_04=5e19, again transient with increasing radiated power. Higher target density was worse (shot 27, for example) with W_max = 133 kJ, at nl_04 = 8e19. The a-coils were energized (+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot) for all but the last shot (#32). If anything, shot 32 was slightly better that 31, although details of rf trips early in the heating pulses were a little different. These two shots (31 and 32) had target nl_04 = 9e19. |

| Jun 17 2003 07:31:00:933AM | Bill Rowan | Engineering setup for Tuesday, 17 June 2003 Purpose: Boronization recovery MP 318 High performance at 5 T Session leader: Marmar Physics operator: Rowan ECDC after boronization in D2 at 2e-4 Torr, stopping by 06:00. Bake at 60 C after boronization, if possible. Run begins at 08:00 and ends at 15:00. NOTE CHANGE IN STARTING AND ENDING TIMES Power systems the same as on 1030530027. A-coils should be hooked up as on 1030507027 (+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot), and the power supply should be enabled. Gas setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) fill B-side upper with 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) (for ECDC) fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, DNB ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RF Setup: All 4 transmitters in Run On by 07:00. Boronization completed. Only approximately 1.5 hours of ECDC before the cut off time of 6am. Short duration of ECDC after the last boronization was credited with the problems getting plasma on the first day after boronization. There will be a need for some ECDC before the run begins if RF does significant conditioning. | |
