Plan:

We want to extend studies of the QC mode, which is implicated in the drop in particle transport seen in EDA H-modes when compared to ELM-free. We will run ohmic EDA H-modes at low power levels to allow the deep penetration of the scanning probe. The goals are to:

{1.}Verify the extent and radial structure of the quasi-coherent
fluctuation and its relation to density and temperature profiles using
the new scanning probe head with radially offset probe tips.

{2.} Look for the high frequency companions of the QC mode predicted
by the BOUT code.

Because the range of the scanning probe is limited by incident heat flux, we will run EDA H-modes at low powers - that is with only Ohmic heating. Following the recipe that was successful on 1000928015 (and earlier), we will begin with discharges at relatively low q and then scan B$_T$ to raise q allowing access to the EDA regime.

Results:

The run was not very successful. We were not able to produce and ohmic EDA - in fact we were barely able to run ohmic h-modes. The problem was a series of disruptions which occurred during the rampdown.

Field errors are definitely implicated in these disruptions. The A coils were turned on for shot 24 - with no other program change, the plasma did not disrupt.

The toroidal field was scanned looking for an appropriate operating point. Thus we determined the threshold for disruption with and without the A coils.

Without A coils: below ~3.2-3.55 T disrupts
With A coils below ~2.6-2.9 T disrupts

Some interesting high-frequency broadband fluctuations were observed with the faster digitizers on the scanning probe - for example see shot 24.

Physop Summary for run 1030703, QC Mode in Ohmic EDA's

The primary lesson learned today was that the A-Coils should ALWAYS be
on. We spent nearly the whole day dealing with disruptions. It is
clear that we can not reproduce results we had during run 1000928
without the correction coils. Bob Granetz suggested adding the coils
on shot 24 which produced a full length discharge with several
elm-free h-modes. On the other hand, even with the correction coils
we did not get results as good as those in 2000, and the plasma still
disrupted when the TF was ramped down below 3 T (as opposed to 2.7 T
during the earlier run). The disruptions all seemed to be related to
the H-to-L back transition. We never actually got an EDA discharge;
only elm-free ones.

The first three shots of the run were taken using a shot from the
previous day in seg 2, with a modified TF waveform to match the
earlier runs from 2000. On shot 4 we simply reloaded shot 1000928015
and dealt with all the recals required to load an older shot. This
change may have improved the the discharge slightly (lasted a little
longer before disruption). However, this shot was not reloaded for
the the shots following the application of the A-Coils, so we don't
really know how the old shot would have run.
