Engineering setup for run 1030708 in support of
Miniproposal 349, Antenna Evaluation


Overnight boronization to the 140 PSI level will be performed.

Run begins at 10:00 to allow time for rf conditioning and ends at 17:00,
or 18:00 if it can be arranged.

Power system setup as on 1030509011.

A-Coils should be ready to run in the same configuration as used
last Thursday (103070324-28).

Gas setup

fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid enabled
fill B-side upper with 10 psi of D2 Hybrid Disabled (for ECDC)
fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled

The following gate valves should be enabled: ECE, VUV, DNB, Z-Bolo
at K-Hor

All rf transmitters should be ready to run by 07:30. Vacuum
conditioning will start as soon as possible following the
boronization. ECDC in D2 will be run for 20 minutes following the
conditioning.

Summary:

Although abbreviated for a number of reasons (J-port conditioning,
EF1U had a failed capacitor in its commutation cap bank, D-port had a
failed cap in its Ross bottle circuit), 016 was a good L-mode
comparison in [0,pi,pi,0] phasing to D and E-port at ~1.3 MW.
Discharge 018 was a good comparison at -90 phasing. The [0,pi,pi,0]
phase appears to heat as well as D and E while the -90deg appears
slightly less efficient in temperature. More investigation is
required to be more diffinitive.

This day was very painful. Besides standard problems associated with
boronization recovery, we had many system problems (see below). The
most serious was a failure of a capacitor in the EF1U commutation bank
that cost us several shots before it was noticed, and then an hour or
so to fix. We also has several discharges that lasted less than 200
ms before being killed by very impressive injections. Steve Wolfe
noted that the current rise was much too fast. A change in the OH1
and OH2 crowbar times from 0.120 to 0.070 s fixed this problem, though
I assume the current rise will continue to evolve as we recover from
boronization.

The good news is that several shots were useful for rf work, and j-port
in current drive phase behaved well.

Problems: EF1U commutation problem (bad cap). #1 transmitter
relay/vacuum bottle problem (fixed while working on EF1U). EF2 IOC
reed relay failure. Cell air conditioning unit reporting errors to
MIT-PP. Lost shot 14 because of a data system hang (Josh had to reboot
the server). We finished the run with a blown fuse in oh2 on shot 19.
