| Plasma Startup and Conditioning Continued EO: Dekow, Fitzgerald, Parkin PO: Irby, Granetz Summary ------- We continued plasma conditioning of the machine and ICRF antennas today. The run did not start until 12:00 while we checked out a helium purity problem in the alternator. The problem was tracked down to a leak in the core particulate monitor system that resulted in air being pumped into the alternator housing. Once this problem was fixed, the helium purity stayed very high all day (~ 99%). ICRF from D&E was working well today with clean rf pulses on several shots and better than 2.3 MW of total coupled power. E-Port was running better than D-Port, however, with higher power and fewer retrys. Some conditioning has begun on J-Port. Some shots were taken today with a sweep from single lower null to double null to single upper null (14,17). Both of these shots disrupted. Shot 14 was followed by two fizzles. We did 10 minutes of ECDC following shot 17, but still had a fizzle on 18. Shot 14 had what may be a record elongation of 1.87 just before the disruption. We continued Bruce's gatevalve closed-after-the-shot experiments. He found 2 Torr-l more gas is released on shots with ICRF than without. This effect could be a good indication of antenna conditioning. The machine ran extremely well, with very reproducible gas and field settings until we began to scan the geometry. | Oct 22 2003 08:45:38:313AM | Jim Irby | Purpose: Plasma startup and conditioning There will be a delay in startup time to about 11:00 as we try to diagnose a problem with a helium purity sensor on the alternator. ECDC overnight in D2 at 2e-4 Torr, stopping by 09:00. Bake at 60 C overnight as well. Run begins between 11:00 and 12:00 and ends at 17:00. Power systems the same as on 1031021012 including control coil settings. Gas setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) fill B-side upper with 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) (for ECDC) fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) Ninja should be left with it current 200 Torr fill. Enable the following gate valves: ECE, VUV, DNB ----------------------------------------------------------------------- RF Setup: Transmitters 1,2,3, and 4 in RUN ON by 10:00 am ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Run Plan: Continue running cleanup plasmas while monitoring H/D, etc. We will also toggle gatevalves closed for 10 minutes following some shots to monitor gas use, wall loading, etc. RF Group will continue antenna conditioning. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | |
| Oct 22 2003 09:12:50:220AM | Jim Irby | Yesterday we stopped the run early because of low helium purity in the alternator. The current theory is that the core monitor pump developed a leak and was pumping air into the alternator housing. Today the pump will not be used since the differential pressure at full speed is sufficient to drive the core monitor. With the core monitor pump off overnight the alternator pressure did not rise. The alternator fill gas has been purged with 7 bottles of helium and the purity level is up to 95% with an alarm limit of 82%. As of 9:05 today we have begun bringing the alternator back up to speed. | |
| Oct 22 2003 11:56:34:563AM | 1031022001 | Jim Irby | First shot will be a cycle test Gas looks low from yesterday |
| Oct 22 2003 12:00:44:020PM | 1031022002 | Jim Irby | Added 2 ms to gas. Another cycle test --- started init before PCS load/clean was done |
| Oct 22 2003 12:28:14:610PM | 1031022003 | Jim Irby | Did load/clean followed by cold-start to ensure proper PCS files Now going for a plasma shot.... plasma into rampdown Alternator reports everything looks good --- no change in helium purity after shot gas looks good, Bz0 a little low compared to yesterday |
| Oct 22 2003 12:46:53:407PM | 1031022004 | Jim Irby | Dropped density request to 1e20 from 1.5e20 /m^2 Also reduced density request starting at 0.8 s rather than 1.0 s Plasma a litter more into rampdown Density a little better controlled H/(H+D) 6 to 7% 1.8 MW of clean ICRF from D&E Alternator helium still looks good. |
| Oct 22 2003 01:04:21:847PM | 1031022005 | Jim Irby | Took 1 ms off gas (now 24 ms) No EF4 supply --- Gary reset supply |
| Oct 22 2003 01:14:09:440PM | 1031022006 | Jim Irby | No PCS changes --- hope to have EF4 Plasma into rampdown Bz0 drifted up to +1.2 mT 2 MW of ICRF from D&E with a few faults on D |
| Oct 22 2003 01:36:37:577PM | 1031022007 | Jim Irby | Changed EF4 from -1300 to -1310 kA Changed TF risetime request from 1 to 5 ms --- see if we can change initial spike on TF bus voltage fizzle ---- no clear reason |
| Oct 22 2003 01:54:15:010PM | 1031022008 | Jim Irby | Dropped density request to 0.8e19/ m^2 Plasma into rampdown h-modes --- 79 kJ no h/d for this shot |
| Oct 22 2003 02:16:00:043PM | 1031022009 | Jim Irby | No PCS changes, but gatevalve closure extrended to 10 minutes from 5 minutes Record number of h-modes (4), 82 kJ H/(H+D) as high as 11% after last h-mode Alternator still doing fine |
| Oct 22 2003 02:45:25:587PM | 1031022010 | Jim Irby | Lowered max density request to 7e19 /m^2 max then dropping to 6e19 Plasma into rampdown Got lower density --- also no h-modes even with 2.3 MW of rf. Very nice, clean rf pulses with good heating H/(H+D) peaking at 12% |
| Oct 22 2003 04:10:53:720PM | 1031022011 | Jim Irby | No PCS changes Plasma into rampdown Got 2.5 MW of rf, but with many interrupts on D |
| Oct 22 2003 03:17:20:013PM | 1031022012 | Robert Granetz | Granetz took over as physop just before this shot. |
| Oct 22 2003 03:18:56:030PM | 1031022012 | Robert Granetz | Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.7 MW (D+E). No H-modes. H/D=0.1-0.17. |
| Oct 22 2003 03:31:32:410PM | 1031022013 | Robert Granetz | Shot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. No RF (at Bruce's request). H/D=0.14. Next shot: try to ramp from lower single null (t=0.5-0.7 s) to upper single null (t=1.3-1.5 s) by ramping ZXL and ZXU accordingly. I didn't change ZCUR, CLEARIN, RXL, or RXU. |
| Oct 22 2003 03:43:14:357PM | 1031022014 | Robert Granetz | Shot 14 -- Good shot. Changed from lower single null to double null to upper single null just before disrupting at t=1.125. Prf=2.7 -> 1.6 MW. Some short H-modes. H/D=0.15. The plasma elongation exceeded 1.85 during the change to upper null. Next shot: change ZCUR from -0.009 to 0.000 m, and move RXL down by 2 cm (to -0.06 m). These changes should decrease the elongation late in the shot. |
| Oct 22 2003 03:52:40:683PM | 1031022015 | Robert Granetz | Shot 15 -- Fizzle. Disruption recovery? Maybe I should have tweaked the startup for post-disruption. Next shot: no changes. |
| Oct 22 2003 04:04:53:693PM | 1031022016 | Robert Granetz | Shot 16 -- Fizzle. Jim Irby is back as phsyop. |
| Oct 22 2003 05:28:16:957PM | 1031022018 | Jim Irby | Loaded shot 1031022013 --- back to single null Did 10 minutes of ECDC following the shot Have asked PLC to keep gatevalves closed 20 minutes after this shot for Bruce fizzle --- end of run |
