| MP#350 - Icrf Loading studies PO: Irby SL: Parisot Purpose: ------- The primary purpose of this run is to simultanously obtain ICRF coupling measurements and radial density profiles in the core, edge and scrape-off layer using Thomson scattering and the A-port Scanning Probe (ASP). Run Plan: --------- We want to use minimum ICRF and ohmic power in order to obtain meaningful ASP probe density profiles, while varying the scrape-off layer conditions, namely with a density and current scan, in L and H-mode. To minimize sheath rectification effects, we will use only D and E antennas, which are located at the other side of the vessel compared to the ASP probe. The first part of the run will be a 5.4 T L-mode discharges (similar to 1031118013), 500 kW from D and E antennas. - shots 1-3: Ip = .6 MA, nel = 6, 9, 12 x 10E19 m^-2 - shots 4-6: Ip = .9 MA, nel = 6, 9, 12 x 10E19 m^-2 - shots 7-9: Ip = 1.2 MA, nel = 6, 9, 12 x 10E19 m^-2 The ASP insertion times are initially 0.75, 0.95, and 1.15 s. In the second part, we will lower the field to 4.3T (1030604025). This should trigger an H-mode. Then we repeat the scan above. If time permits, we will investigate the impact of various waveforms and phasings on the coupling, power splitting and heating efficiency of J-antenna. Summary: -------- A good run. We had some computer problems at the beginning, but after shot 7, things went very well and we completed most of the run plan. Radial profiles were obtained simultanously with coupling measurements for D and E, and we had good data from the probes even with 1 MW of ICRF power. Some difficulty was encountered to trigger H-mode at low current and we could not obtain an H-mode scan at lower current. With higher current and by placing the RF power closer to the axis. , we obtained good H mode data. Initial comparison between the measured loading for D and E and the prediction from the 1D model is encouraging. More analysis will be needed : it is critical to perform a careful mapping of the probe and Thomson data to the midplane in order to connect the profiles. We also had some discrepancy between the loading curves from D and E. The measured profiles and coupling measurements will also be suitable for more advanced simulations using the TOPICA code. - L-mode part: 005-006: Bt=5.4T, Ip=0.6 MA, nel=0.6 10^20 m^-2 007: Bt=5.4T, Ip=0.6 MA, nel=0.9 10^20 011: Bt=5.4T, Ip=0.9 MA, nel=1.1 10^20 (E antenna only) 012: Bt=5.4T, Ip=0.9 MA, nel=0.9 10^20 013: Bt=5.4T, Ip=0.9 MA, nel=0.6 10^20 014: Bt=5.4T, Ip=1.2 MA, nel=0.6 10^20 (L L H) 015: Bt=5.4T, Ip=1.2 MA, nel=0.9 10^20 016: Bt=5.4T, Ip=1.2 MA, nel=1.1 10^20 (E antenna only) - H-mode part 020: Bt=4.3T, Ip=0.6 MA, nel=0.8 10^20 (L L L) 021: Bt=4.2T, Ip=0.6 MA, nel=0.8 10^20 (L L L) 022: Bt=4.2T, Ip=1.2 MA, nel=0.8 10^20 (L L L) 023: Bt=4.2T, Ip=1.2 MA, nel=0.8 10^20 (L H H) 024: Bt=4.8T, Ip=1.2 MA, nel=0.8 10^20 (L H H) 026: Bt=4.8T, Ip=1.0 MA, nel=0.8 10^20 (L H H) 027: Bt=4.8T, Ip=1.0 MA, nel=0.6 10^20 (L H H) 028: Bt=4.8T, Ip=1.2 MA, nel=0.6 10^20 (L L H) 029: Bt=4.8T, Ip=1.2 MA, nel=1.0 10^20 (L L H) 030: Bt=5.2T, Ip=1.2 MA, nel=0.8 10^20 (L H H) |

| Engineering setup for Thursday, 20 Nov 2003 MP#350 --- ICRF Loading Studies SL: Parisot PO: Irby BO: Granetz, Beals ECDC overnight in D2 at 2e-4 Torr, stopping by 07:00. Bake at 60 C overnight as well. Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00. Power systems the same as on 1031118018. A-coils should be hooked up as on 1031114027 (+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot), and the power supply should be enabled. Gas setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) Enable gatevalves (there will be no vacuum problems): ECE, VUV, DNB ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RF Setup: All 4 transmitters in Run On by 08:00 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Summary ------- The machine ran extremely well today. The gas and field settings were very reproducible and required almost no intervention by the physop. We explored a wide range of densities, fields, and plasma currents today. On shot 23 we dropped the field and raised the current enough to disrupt at 900 kA. All other discharges made it well into rampdown. We began by loading shot 1031118018 and enabling seg 2 for SNL. This shot provided a very good target plasma for the probes. Note that the sparker current from the new sparker at K-Hor has been consistently higher than the old sparker at a lower voltage (320 to 1000 uA vs 280 uA). We had no duds. Problems -------- We took two cycle tests that indicated the data system was generally okay, but with a few signals missing (gas puff data for example). Then on the first plasma attempt (would have been shot 3), the data system died. Josh stole memory chips from one of the linux boxes and upgraded the server. This change seems to have solved the problem. Some of the gas system CAMAC was missing most of the run, but it began working for no clear reason late in the run. Score ----- duds fizzles 09,16,19,25,31 plasmas 05,06,07,08,10,11,12,13,14,15, 17,18,20,21,22,23,24,26,27,28, 29,30 cycle tests 01,02 missing shots 03,04 |
