We had data problems on J-port for 001-004 and these have been fixed (001 had no J-port, 002 had no J3, and 003 was NTP). Otherwise the recovery was fairly painless. When F-side neutral pressure reached 0.3 we started to have more faulting on all antennas but particularly D and J-port. |

| Physics operator summary for run 1031216 (Tuesday): MP 355 ICRF post-boron conditioning MP 377 Energy confinement in double-null (standby) Session leader: S. Wukitch (MP 355), E. Marmar (MP 377) Physics operator: R. Granetz Summary: Despite a slow start because of RF data acquisition and other problems, the boronization recovery of both the machine and the RF was quick, and MP 355 was declared done after shot 7. We then switched to the double-null MP 377. We ran 1.0 and 1.2 MA, and target densities from 0.8 to 1.4e20 m-2. The machine continued to run very well, with only two fizzles. RF power got as high as 6 MW, but J-port antenna does not run well at higher densities. See the session leaders' summaries for physics learned on this MP. There was a problem with the EF3 breaker on shot 3, which caused a dud, and there was a TF crowbar at the end of shot 19, which blew one fuse. Scorecard: 18 plasmas 2 fizzles 1 dud 0 test or no-power shot cycle 0 aborted and/or screwed up by computer problems ---------- 21 total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Engineering setup for Tuesday, 16 Dec 2003 MP 355 ICRF post-boron conditioning MP 377 Energy confinement in double-null (standby) Session leader: S. If that goes as fast as last time, then we will change to double null plasmas and take up where we left off on MP 377. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Boronization was done last evening. ECDC in helium was done overnight, but no 60 C bake. Hybrid coldstart done by the engineering group; no errors found Loaded PCS segment 1 from 1031212024 (most recent shot). Loaded PCS segment 2 from 1031204037 (1 MA, 5.4 T fiducial). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The start of the run will be delayed while the RF tries to get some vacuum conditioning done. This will be followed by some ECDC in D2. Shot 01 -- Plasma. Good shot. 1.0 MA fiducial. Bruce just informed me that the gate valve should have been set to remained closed on the fiducial, which was news to me. Prf=2+ MW (D and E). One H-mode. Startup just barely made it. Next shot: reduce pre-fill by 1 ms. Set main gate valve to remain closed for 8 minutes after the shot (at Bruce's request). Shot 02 -- Plasma. Another good shot. D and E are good; still no J-port power. Longer H-mode. 120 kJ with 2.3 MW of RF. Zeff=1.5. Very low carbon light during startup. Next shot: repeat, no PCS changes Shot 03 -- Dud. No EF3. Problem with EF3 breaker. Next shot: repeat, no PCS changes Shot 04 -- Plasma. Good shot. All three antenna systems are working, but the data acquisition for J-port is not working, so we don't know how much power it's radiating. It's presumably comparable to D and E, which would make Prf about 4.5 MW. Two H-modes, with Wth=160 kJ. Next shot: repeat, with slight tweak on Br_0 Shot 05 -- Plasma. Good shot. All antennas and transmitters are working. Prf=4.5 MW. Long EDA H-mode. Next shot: no PCS changes. RF will change from a stepped waveform to a simple flat waveform at 4.5 MW Shot 06 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=4.5 MW, but with lots of faulting on J3 and J4. Next shot: repeat, no PCS changes Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=4.6 MW, with some faulting on D. Success declared on the boronization recovery (MP 355). Next shot: load a recent double null shot (1031211016), except keep segment 1 from the present shot, and begin MP 377. NOTE: the active segment is #4 !! Shot 08 -- Plasma. Good shot. Nearly double null, but actually more upper single null. Disrupted halfway down the rampdown. Prf=4.6 MW, with lots of faulting. RF pulse goes from t=0.6 to 1.0 s. H-mode. Wth=170 kJ. Lots of large m=1/n=1 at the H-L backtransition. Next shot: tweak the SSEP gain to remove the rampdown disruption. RF programming is also being changed. Shot 09 -- Plasma. Good shot. Ramped all the way down. Prf=4.5 MW until t=1.0 s (with no faults), and then started ramping up to 6 MW, but with lots of faulting on J3 and J4. Next shot: no PCS change, but delay the RF pulse by 100 ms at the request of John Rice. Shot 10 -- Plasma. Good shot. RF looked the same, except for the 100 ms shift. Next shot: no PCS changes, but lower the J-port RF power by 50%. Shot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=3.3 MW flat, then ramping up to 6 MW with only one fault. SSEP=+2 mm, kappa=1.73, delta_L=0.45, delta_U=0.65, inner gap=2.0 cm, outer gap=1.1-1.4 cm. nl_04 (target)=0.9e20 m-2, Ip=1.04 MA, Btor=5.4 T. Wth peaks at 190 kJ at peak RF power. Next shot: repeat, no changes Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. There was a big chunk taken out of the plasma current between t=0.1-0.2 s. Wth=200 kJ. Peak Rdd>1.0e14 s-1. Next shot: no PCS changes; keep RF on for another 100 ms Shot 13 -- Fizzle. Next shot: reduce pre-fill gas puff by 1 ms Shot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot. The RF pulse is lasting longer than the current flattop. Next shot: increase flattop to t=1.5 s (from 1.3 s). Shot 15 -- Plasma. Good shot. Current flattop now goes to t=1.5 s. The Btor flattop still needs to be extended, however. J-port trips out at t=1.35 s. Next shot: raise Ip to 1.25 MA and nl_04 to 1.0e20 m-2. Also extend Btor flattop to t=1.5 s. Shot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot. Ip=1.23 MA. Flattop goes to t=1.5 s. RF doesn't like the higher density. nl_04=1.04e20 m-2. Much of the engineering data did not come through, so no EFITs. Next shot: increase nl_04 to 1.2e20 m-2 Shot 17 -- Plasma. Good shot. nl_04(target)=1.2e20 m-2. Ip=1.22 MA. Next shot: reduce SSEP by 2 mm. Also reduce argon puff by 2 ms (at John Rice's request!!) Shot 18 -- Fizzle. Next shot: reduce Br_0 by 0.5 mT. Also reduced argon puff by another 10 ms (to 30 ms) at Earl's request. Shot 19 -- Plasma. Good shot. TF crowbarred. This equilibrium was much more "double-null"-like than previous shots today. Wth reaches 170 kJ. Next shot: increase nl_04 to 1.4e20 m-2 and return SSEP to its value before shot 19. The next shot will be delayed while a fuse is changed. Shot 20 -- Plasma. Good shot. Back to the slightly (magnetically) unbalanced double null. nl_04(target)=1.4e20 m-2. J-port didn't go (because of the higher density). Wth=130-140 kJ with Prf=2-3 MW. Next shot: no changes Shot 21 -- Plasma. Good shot. Pretty much a repeat of the previous shot. J-port still didn't go. Wth=155 kJ, Prf=3 MW. End of run |

| Dec 16 2003 01:20:39:180PM | 1031216015 | Robert Granetz | Shot 15 -- Plasma. |
| Dec 16 2003 01:38:55:707PM | 1031216016 | Robert Granetz | Shot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot. Ip=1.23 MA. Flattop goes to t=1.5 s. RF doesn't like the higher density. nl_04=1.04e20 m-2. Much of the engineering data did not come through, so no EFITs. Next shot: increase nl_04 to 1.2e20 m-2 |
| Dec 16 2003 01:48:15:070PM | 1031216017 | Robert Granetz | Shot 17 -- Plasma. Good shot. nl_04(target)=1.2e20 m-2. Ip=1.22 MA. Next shot: reduce SSEP by 2 mm. Also reduce argon puff by 2 ms (at John Rice's request!!) |
| Dec 16 2003 02:05:05:410PM | 1031216018 | Robert Granetz | Shot 18 -- Fizzle. Next shot: reduce Br_0 by 0.5 mT. Also reduced argon puff by another 10 ms (to 30 ms) at Earl's request. |
| Dec 16 2003 02:28:16:540PM | 1031216019 | Robert Granetz | Shot 19 -- Plasma. Good shot. TF crowbarred. This equilibrium was much more "double-null"-like than previous shots today. Wth reaches 170 kJ. Next shot: increase nl_04 to 1.4e20 m-2 and return SSEP to its value before shot 19. |
| Dec 16 2003 02:48:19:483PM | 1031216019 | Robert Granetz | The next shot will be delayed while a fuse is changed. |
| Dec 16 2003 02:57:58:007PM | 1031216020 | Robert Granetz | Shot 20 -- Plasma. Good shot. Back to the slightly (magnetically) unbalanced double null. nl_04(target)=1.4e20 m-2. J-port didn't go (because of the higher density). Wth=130-140 kJ with Prf=2-3 MW. Next shot: no changes |
| Dec 16 2003 03:06:27:137PM | 1031216021 | Robert Granetz | Shot 21 -- Plasma. Good shot. Pretty much a repeat of the previous shot. J-port still didn't go. Wth=155 kJ, Prf=3 MW. End of run |
