MP 377: compare single-null/double-null confinement Day 2: Density
scan at fixed current

This run went well, and the density scan was completed comparing lower
single null (LSN) with double-null (DN)confinement.

This was the second day following boronization, and was preceded by
overnight ECDC in HELIUM.

All shots were 1.0 MA. All double-null shots were well balanced
according to EFIT, with |SSEP|< 2 mm, and used the same nominal
shapes.

For the LSN shots, two different delta_uppers were used, with no
differences obvious.

Target densities (nl_04 ) were around 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0
e20. We didn't go higher because of previous problems with RF at
higher densities. There were no obvious trends in confinement as a
function of density. We also tried 3 shots with increasing amounts of
gas-puffing preprogrammed during the H-mode phase (shots 24, 25, 26,
all DN); the ultimate density in H-mode was higher with the puff, but
again there was no obvious effect on stored energy (at the peak).

All shots had multiple H-modes with back transitions. DN seem less
EDA-like with small ELMs, but the LSN shots were not strongly EDAish
either.

At the end of the run, we backed off on power (there was a problem
with one of the rf tuning stubs); most shots used 4 to 4.5 MW RF,
shots 31, 32 and 33 were at 3 MW.

Two trends were observed:
1) The first few shots were (transiently)
the best in terms of Wmax, and then there was a gentle decline through
the day.
2) As observed on 1031211, DN discharges had slightly higher
Wmax compared to LSN. Averaged over the whole day, with
0.7 < nl_04 target < 1 e20, Wmax was 11% higher for DN.

Run plan

We will start with 1031216017 (double null programed in segment 4), reducing Argon puff to 30 msec,
and proceed according to MP 377.

Summary:

We started from shot 1031211020, using segment 1 from 1031216017. The run was successfull from the point of view of plasma operation. A density scan was performed for both single lower null and double null configurations. After shot 2 shot 1031210001 was loaded for SN configuration. Then for shot 8 segment 4 was loaded from shot 2 for DN configuration and we kept switching between segments 2 and 4 for SN and DN discharges (see below for details). Overnight ECDC in He depleted the walls of D2 and on shot 2 the current rise in the startup was too fast and lots of runaways were observed. After shot 2 the prepuff was raised from 15 msec to 25 msec, raising the ratiomatic pressure from 0.02 to 0.05 and then the startup was fine for the whole day, except the unexplained fizzle on shot 20. No changes was done to startup after the fizzle. On shot 28 TCI mulfunctioned. Also, RF developed a problem on E port which was not fixed for the rest of the run.
