monster sawtooth

Summary

We were able to evaluate fast particle effects on the sawtooth period
during H-mode. A problem with the TF cooling caused the shot cycle to
be fairly slow. We had a total of 20 plasmas and most went into
H-mode despite efforts to keep them in L-mode. In fact the limiter
discharges (021-024) had brief H-modes with a threshold around 4.5 MW.
We made an abbreviated current scan and found that the sawtooth period
was more strongly affected by the RF at 0.8 MA versus 1.0 MA. Three
monster sawteeth were achieved on 017, 018, and 025 with a record
sawtooth period of 80 msec on 017. To complete this MP, we need to complete
the field scan (move the deposition to the q=1 surface on both the low
and high field side on the magnetic axis). Additional current points
would at 1.2 MA and 0.7 MA would also help clarify the role of fast
particles.

Summary:

Some problems but generally a good day. The startup was fine until we started getting duds on shot 7.
We had three of them (shopts 7,9,11) before I decided to follow Steve Wolfe's advice and change
Br and Bz. That fixed the problem. There were no fizzles today.
We ran lower null for the first 2 shots (1 and 3) and then switched to upper null. From shot 20 to
24 we ran inner wall limited plasmas. All shape changes were done in segment 2.
Last shot - reloaded shot 13 (USN).

Total 25 shots
3 duds
0 fizzles
1 data cycle
21 plasmas

ECDC Overnight in D2, stopping by 07:00
Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00.

Power systems the same as 1040212030

A-coils as on 1040212030.

Plan:

Gas setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1)
leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2)
fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)

Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, DNB

RF: Transmitters #1,2,3 and 4 in RUN-ON by 08:00

Run plan:

The goal of this mini-proposal is to investigate role of fast particle
pressure and ion cyclotron current drive in modifying the sawtooth
period.

Start with 1040212030 (Fiducial, 5.4 T, Ip~1 MA, nl04~0.85) - 1 MW steps in RF to 4 MW
