| Shot 11 begins MP 341 _______________ SL: Fiore PO: Wolfe The plan is as follows: Begin by setting up a good off axis double barrier ITB plasma, such as 1031212021, 4.5 T, 80 Mhz), taking particular care that all of the relevant diagnostics are collecting good data. Try to obtain EDA H-mode at 2 MW. When an ITB is established began adding 70 Mhz power at the center, beginning at 0.6 MW and increasing shot by shot. Once the limits at this power are established, the off-axis power should be changed, either lower or higher as the performance of the rf allows, and the limits for central heating should be explored again. (1-4 shots) Establish EDA H-mode with off axis 80 Mhz and verify the diagnostics Increment the central rf power to find the central power absorption (8-10 shots as needed) Change the amount of off-axis ICRF power and repeat (8-10) shots. If everything went swimmingly and there is more time, try a 3rd power off axis. _________________________________________ This run went very well. ITBs formed easily and readily. There were good ITBs on shots 13, 14,15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 29, 30, and 31. Initially, we had problems getting steady power from the J-port system which was supplying the on-axis power. However, once we got it to be reliable, we were able to operate up to 1.5 MW central power into the ITB without adversely affecting the ITB. This gives us a record 3.5 MW total power into an ITB plasma! We likely reached record stored energy and central temperatures in an ITB on these shots, 27 and 29. Unfortunately, we lost an output tube in J4 fon shot 29, which kept us from finding what the limiting central power was for this operation. Shot summary 1040309011 Two short H-modes. The RF had problems staying on. The toroidal field was slightly too high. The rf will attempt to get a better tune. 1040309013 One long H-mode with nice ITB. Rf dropped out as it started to go ITB, and the central power did not come on as scheduled. Try again. 1040309015 One long H-mode with ITB, but ended a early from excess radiation. No central RF again. We will drop the 80 Mhz power slightly, and raise the plasma current slightly to try and get a cleaner rf trace. 1040309016 One long H-mode with ITB, but ended in a disruption. The peaking was not as pronounced as on the previous shots. No central RF again 1040309017 Ratty H-mode with no ITB. E-port rf dropped out, and J-Port didn't stay on. 1040309018 Long H-mode with a small back-trasition at 1.07 s. Still no steady power from J-Port. 1040309019 Long H-mode with a small back-trasition at 1.0 s. J-Port stays on! at 0.5 MW. Density rise on the ITB did not clamp, however, as it typically has at this power in past runs. 1040309020 Long H-mode with a small back-trasition at 0.95 s. Nice ITB but ends in a disruption. No J-Port power however. 1040309021 Long H-mode, but dubious ITB. J-port stayed on with the exception of a back transition at 1.3 s. 1040309022 Long H-mode, late ITB. J-port stayed on but did not clamp the density rise. We are raising the D and E power to see if we can get the ITB to start earlier. 1040309023 Long H-mode, with ITB. J-port wave form was odd, coming on at 1 s and ramping up to 2MS. Raising the off axis power did let it go to an ITB earlier, but the high J-port power blew it away. 1040309024 Long H-mode, with nice ITB. J-port had approximately 0.7 MW, pending calibration by the rf group. We are going to raise the J-port power another 0.2 MW. 1040309025 Long H-mode, with nice ITB. Apparently this was a repeat of shot 24. J-port had approximately 0.7 MW, pending calibration by the rf group. We are really going to raise the J-port power another 0.2 MW for the next shot. 1040309026 Long H-mode, with nice ITB. J-port had approximately 0.8 MW. We will try to raise the J-port power another 0.2 MW for the next shot. 1040309027 Long H-mode, with nice ITB, although it cut out after J-port came on. J-port had approximately 1.3 MW. We will try to repeat the shot. 1040309028 No TF. 1040309029 Very nice ITB, with central rf clamping and holding the peak VB signal at just under 8x10^20. This shot could be a new classic with 1.5 MW out of J-port into an ITB. 1040309030 Very nice ITB. No central power. 1040309031 Very nice ITB. Higher D and E power, but some faults. No central power |

| Physics Operator Summary for Tuesday, Mar 9, 2004 MP#355: Post-boronization conditioning and Make the RF work at 70MHz SL: Wukitch FOLLOWED if possible by MP#341 Power Absorption in ITB SL: Fiore PO: wolfe Engineering setup: ------------------ Boronize overnight Run begins at 09:00, ends at 17:00 Power supplies as on 1040218003 Gas System Setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) leave B-side upper with 15 psi He3 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) fill NINJA (lower cap) with 8 psi D2 Gate valve permissives for the usual suspects (ECE, VUV, DNB) assuming no vacuum problems RF: Transmitters #1,2,3 and 4 in RUN-ON by 08:00 Run Plan: --------- Start from fiducial-like shot 1040218003, 1MA, nl04=0.85, 5.4T. Get all transmitters working at nominal power and verify post-boronization EDA behavior. If conditioning goes smoothly, proceed to MP#341, getting as far through the following plan as possible. MP#341 will continue on Wednesday: Start from 1031212021 with TF lowered from 4.56T to 4.53T. Begin by setting up a good off axis double barrier ITB plasma, such as 1031212021, 4.5 T, 80 Mhz), taking particular care that all of the relevant diagnostics are collecting good data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Results: -------- RF commissioning/conditioning went quite well, and Wukitch turned the run over to Catherine at shot#11. I tweaked the "fiducial" a bit to get rid of some discontinuities at segment switch, including Ip and Zcur. This, together with adding pg3 puffing in seg1 seemed useful in minimizing or eliminating an injection at .1 sec which led to one early disruption (#3). I recommend using a shot like 1040309010 for future fiducials. Once we moved on to MP#341 (shot 11) ITB discharges were readily established, and after a bit of thrashing Steve got J-port working on these cases as well. This part of the run went extremely well, in that we succeeded in getting up to 1.5MW into the core without destroying the ITB. Neutron rates in the ITB phase were up to 2e13, and TS showed good electron heating as well. The stored energy on a couple of these exceeded 100kJ, which is a record for C-Mod ITB shots. These results are a dramatic improvement over our previous ITB cases, which arrested with ~0.6MW of on-axis heating and terminated the ITB with any more than that. Unfortunately, on shot #29 the FPA on FMIT#4 died. This ended the on-axis heating for the day (and the week), but we took two additional shots with off-axis only ICRF only, at two different powers. Generally, the machine ran well today. One no power shot was taken because of a tci laser problem in check. There was one delay to clean contacts on Ross relays which were causing an I2t fault which wouldn't clear. We had one recurrence of the NO TF phenomenon, which hasn't happened for awhile and remains mysterious. On the same shot #29 as we lost the FPA tube we had an IOC indication on the chopper, but there was no damage and the supply worked fine on the next shot. Aside from the tube disaster, it was a good run (Other than that, Mrs Lincoln...) Scorecard: Tests/No power 2 Duds 1 (NO TF) Fizzles 0 Plasmas 28 (1 early disruption) ============== === total 31 |

From the yag/nl4 ratio, we seem to have an ITB, starting around 1.13sec. No Jport. D&E RF pretty ratty; I'm sure he can do better. small injection at .1 sec is back, need to watch it. next shot: no changes |

The strike is close to the ef1 pocket and inner side is approaching the nose. next shot: Move rxl out for a little more clearance. |
| Mar 9 2004 01:14:51:753PM | 1040309017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17: Move rxl out for a little more clearance from -.02 to -.01 plasma full length, multiple H-modes; no ITB this time. D dropped out, Still not getting J. Got the 1cm on rxl, it's still sliding in during the shot. I could put a slope on it, but leave well enough alone for now. next shot: repeat. |
| Mar 9 2004 01:21:56:200PM | 1040309018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: repeat. plasma disrupted at 1.43sec; I probably need to move rxl some more. Got our ITB back this time, but got a back transition at 1.09 that kills it off. Still not getting J-port. next shot: ramp rxl out by another cm. |
| Mar 9 2004 01:40:24:040PM | 1040309019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19:Somehow, I had loaded a ramp in on rxl, change it to be flat at -0.01 plasma to 1.35 sec. The rxl is not helping this disruption. The strikes are well clear of the pocket this time, so this was a red herring. Got an ITB and J-port stayed on with ~.4MW, no arresting that I can see. Also, the early injection is back. next shot: try a repeat, I don't know what's causing the disruption |
| Mar 9 2004 01:48:25:773PM | 1040309020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: try a repeat, I don't know what's causing the disruption Another disruption, 1.23sec. It isn't going away. next shot: drop the current back to 800kA |
| Mar 9 2004 02:07:26:630PM | 1040309021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: drop the current back to 800kA, rxl to -.02; also increase pg4 to 17msec plasma, full length. EDA until backtrans at 1.3, Got some J~0.4MW, fair ITB, not as clear on TS as earlier. next shot: move second seg2 Ip point from .2 to .15sec, 800kA |
| Mar 9 2004 02:17:36:333PM | 1040309022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: move second seg2 Ip point from .2 to .15sec, 800kA plasma full length, back transition at 0.81sec, following a small injection at 0.76sec. next shot: raise D&E power |
| Mar 9 2004 02:29:56:697PM | 1040309022 | Steve Wolfe | We have a (hopefully) short delay while some relay contacts get cleaned to prevent a bad oh resistance reading. |
| Mar 9 2004 02:55:02:093PM | 1040309023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: raise D&E power blip will be puffing D2 from ninja around 1.4sec plasma full length, Got wrong waveform on J, starting at 1.sec to 2MW at 1.3 Got 2.3MW on D&E, not a strong peaking before 1sec, Small injection around .85sec next shot: try again with correct waveform. |
| Mar 9 2004 03:09:31:210PM | 1040309024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24: delay J and go to 0.8MW plasma full length, eda to 1.28 pretty clear ITB, really taking off at 1,22sec when the sawtooth stops J comes on at 1.2sec, 0.6MW (Steve says it's really more like 0.8MWatt, he'll back calibrate later) next shot: go up another .2MW on J |
| Mar 9 2004 03:23:57:890PM | 1040309025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: go up another .2MW on J plasma full length, eda to 1.32sec Looks almost identical to 24, same J-port power D+E is at 2MW. next shot: repeat for higher power on all four xmitters |
| Mar 9 2004 03:35:26:920PM | 1040309026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: repeat for higher power on all four xmitters plasma, full length, eda to 1.38sec Good ITB, may be clamping, but not obvious to me. J now is reading ~0.8MW, D+E=2.3MW |
| Mar 9 2004 03:51:39:353PM | 1040309027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#27: repeat for higher power on J plasma full length, eda to some kind of event at 1.28, continues to rampdown. Wmhd >100kJ, neuts_hards to 1.5e13. next shot: repeat, see if we avoid the event |
| Mar 9 2004 04:01:11:290PM | 1040309028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#28: repeat, see if we avoid the event No tf. No apparent faults. next shot: Once more, with field |
| Mar 9 2004 04:19:42:973PM | 1040309029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#29: repeat, see if we avoid the event plasma full length, nice long eda, looks like an ITB, No sharp event, but still rolls over after 1.35sec; rf stays on until 1.4 or so, PLC alarms on RF, also IOC on chopper. probably going to have a little delay while they check it out. Wookie reports they can't get bias to come up on J4; he's gone to look for some fuses. |
| Mar 9 2004 04:51:46:617PM | 1040309030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#30: The fpa on J4 is dead; run J at zero power, just D+E off-axis power for this shot. We're also checking to be sure that the chopper is ok. plasma full length. eda to 1.25sec next shot: raise power on D+E |
| Mar 9 2004 05:07:32:233PM | 1040309031 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#31: raise power on D+E plasma full length, eda only to 1.26 again. Got ITB until the H->L . End of run. |
