To add another degree of difficulty, the He3 appears to accumulate from shot to shot making reproducibility somewhat difficult. Reasonable heating efficiency was observed at 8 T (see 007) and a few dithering discharges (see 019) were obtained. The threshold appears to be around 4 T which is higher than last summer. From the RF operation point of view, too little He3 appears to result in faulting in D and E antennas. We should finish the He3 scan to find the gas puff at which significant mode conversion is observed. |

| Physop Summary for MP#203: 8T He3 Heating PO: Byford, Dekow, Parkin Session leader: Wukitch Physics operator: Irby Summary ------------------------------- The machine ran very well today at 8T and up to 1.2 MA. We began the run with a 50 kA TF test shot. Several gate drive boards had been replaced before the run in the TF supply. Checks were also made of the fast and slow TF ground fault circuits. Shot 002 was a 5.4 T shot to compare with shot 1040331001 (the last He3 rf heating run). On shot 007 we finally made it into rampdown at 7.8T, without any breakers pulling, after a reduction in Ip from 1.2 to 1 MA. On shot 008 both CLEARIN and RCUR were adjusted to rampdown at 1.2 rather than 1.5 s. These changes produced a full length plasma that ramped down all the way. By the end of the run, we had worked our way back up to 1.2 MA with good rampdowns. We also found that an increase in the early Ip programming demand and a reduction in the early CLEARIN reduced the demand on the EFC and eliminated the early disruptions (see shots 012, 013, and 014). Shot 002 was very impressive with 7e13 neuts/s and Te above 6.3 kV. Problems ------------------------------- Bill Cochran and Gary Dekow debugged the TF supply before today's run. They found 4 bad gate boards, plus one board with a bad connection. In addition, yesterday they found that the conduction fault boards were triggered even at low TF current.
