The initial vacuum tests were unsuccessful, but we decided to pursue plasma discharges for completeness. With J4, we were able to couple up to ~1 MW with few trips and struggled with ~1.25 MW. J3 operation was hampered by breakdown at fairly low power and voltage (15 kV). On 021, a change in the matching appeared to be more successful but 022 had runaway density. The run confirms that previous operation was limited by an RF leakage problem and a second problem likely to be breakdown at a high voltage location. Discharge 021 suggests this problem may be in the matching network. Further discharges are required to improve the match and verify J3 will operate. The RF leakage appears to be less than last configuration but still have noise on neutrons, hirex, and the ratiomatic. This suggests we need to further increase the capacitance to reduce the RF leakage. In addition the loading is significantly lighter than 78 or 79 MHz operation. J4 reached 34 kV for 1 MW injected compared to ~25 kV at 78 MHz. |

| Physop summary for Tuesday, May 4. Run plan: Session leader: S. Wukitch Physics operator: D. Mossessian MP#390 Evaluation of D(He3) minority heating If available, ECDC Overnight in D2, stopping by 07:00 Run begins at 11:00 and ends at 17:00. Power systems the same as 1040423002 A-coils as on 1040423002. Gas setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) leave B-side upper with 15 psi He3 Hybrid enabled (PG2) fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV, DNB RF: Transmitters #1,2,3 and 4 in RUN-ON by 08:30 _________________________________________________________ Summary: The run was supposed to start at 11 am, but was delayed until noon. Since RF still had problems at noon, we switched to MP #394 - MSE calibrations. The calibrations are performed by firing DNB into the gas (no plasma) with only TF, EF4 and EF3 suppplies running. Aftr 5 calibration shots (2-6) we switched back to MP#390. Plasma ran OK, with no startup problems. Few shots disrupted early because of large injections. After getting a locked mode disruption on shot 8 it was realized that A-coil is not configured properly and is disabled. A-coil was turned on from shot 9 on. Overall we had 21 shots, 15 plasmas and 5 MSE calibration. First shot was a test. Details: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1040504002 EF3 disabled, EF4 = 5 kA, PG4 - 800 msec ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1040504003 EF3 disabled, EF4 = 5 kA, PG4 - 400 msec resulting in 1 mtor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1040504004 EF3 disabled, EF4 = 5 kA, PG4 - 200 msec resulting in 0.5 mtor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1040504006 EF3 disabled, EF4 = 5 kA, PG4 - 100 msec resulting in 0.25 mtor Next shot - run plasma shot for RF. Load 1040423002. PG2 to 60 msec for He3 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1040504008 Plasma. Locked mode - A coil is not set up right and is desabled. Next shot - verify the present settings for A-coil and enable it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1040504009 Plasma.
