Run Summary:

We made progress towards 50 MHz operation of J antenna. We have
established that both transmitters can couple to their respective
elements and have limited data suggesting they will operate
simultaneously. I think we have clearly identified that the previous
DC break was the source of the RF noise and the transmitter tune is
the likely culprit for the inability to couple to the plasma. The
difficulty in running both transmitters simultaneously is also likely
a result of the transmitter tune. It appears the transmitters
oscillate at frequencies in addition to 50 MHz when operated into
plasma. This may be a result of using a stub to match the dummy load
to 50 Ohms that results in a delicate transmitter configuration.

Since J4 was operating reliably, we scanned both the B-field and 3He
concentration to investigate mode conversion physics. In a series of
discharges, we scanned the mode conversion such that the PCI signal
shows both the IBW and ICW in one discharge and IBW and ICW isolated
in two other discharges. This marks the first conclusive evidence of
IBW measured by the PCI and the mapping of the mode conversion region.

Physics Operator Summary for Wednesday, May 5, 2004. Run 1040505.

Purpose: MP#390 Evaluation of D(He3) minority heating

Session leader: S. Wukitch
Physics operator: W. Rowan

Summary------------------------------------------------------------------------
Began the run from shot 1040504021. Loaded the entire shot -- including the
startup. There were no changes to the startup during the day, and it was
stable. There were some early disruptions due to injections.

Injections caused disruptions on several shots at approximately 1s. The RF was on
at that time. A few hots spots were also observed in the divertor on the video
view of j-port at that time. RXL was changed slightly to see what affect it
had on the hot spots. There was no noticable effect on the hot spots but the
rate of disruptions decreased. The RF was working better by that time as well
so there is no conclusion to this -- just a thought.

He3 was puffed from PG2. The typical pulse length was approximately 50 ms,
but that was lengthed and shorted during the run.

One software glitch led to a no-power shot. That shot was overwritten by
the following shot so there is no number for it -- it is the first attempt
at 011.

BT was varied over the range 5.1 T to 5.7 T.

Density feedback concerned Jim throughout the day, but there was only one
problem due to the feedback and that shot (029) did not end early.

001. Plasma. Disruption at 0.6 s

SXR shows sharp signal increase at 0.55. That continues until the disruption.
SXR also shows a sharp increase at 0.42 s which recovers to the usual low signal.
There were two injections after 0.35 s. The second caused the disruption.

MP#390 Evaluation of D(He3) minority heating

If available, ECDC Overnight in D2, stopping by 07:00
Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00.

Power systems the same as 1040504021

A-coils as on 1040504021

Gas setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1)
leave B-side upper with 15 psi He3 Hybrid enabled (PG2)
fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)

Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, DNB

RF: Transmitters #1,2,3 and 4 in RUN-ON by 08:30
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Plan - Try to get J3 working, and then get J3 and J4 working together.

May 5 2004 09:06:49:817AM1040505001Bill Rowan001. Plasma. Disruption at 0.6 s

SXR shows sharp signal increase at 0.55. That continues until the disruption.
SXR also shows a sharp increase at 0.42 s which recovers to the usual low signal.
There were two injections after 0.35 s. The second caused the disruption.
