| MP 413: B-field scaling of error threshold at constant q95, n/nG, shape, etc. Session leader: R. Granetz Physics operator: S. Wolfe Plan: vary toroidal B-field shot-to-shot, keeping q95, n/nG (and nR/B), shape, plasma regime (ohmic L-Mode), and applied B-tilde spectrum. At each condition, find the threshold B-tilde amplitude for locked modes. In order to reduce the number of disruptions, at each condition we will start with a high value of B-tilde (stable) and reduce it until we get a locked mode appearing. This can be done by either ramping down the A-coil current during the shot, or shot-to-shot (which might give better reproducibility). Parameters: q95=3.1-3.2 n/nG=0.17 (ITER ohmic value) (corresponds to nR/B=0.23e20) lower single null, ohmic, L-mode standard A-coil configuration B-fields: 3, 4, 5, 5.4, 6, 7, and 8 T (or whatever the maximum allowed) Note that Ip and ne will vary linearly with B in order to keep q95 and n/nG constant. |

| Neglecting shot 17, for which n/nG was not close to the desired value (because the shot disrupted very early), the data is extremely well fit with a Btor exponent of -1.14. This gives a major radius exponent of 0.58. |

MP#413 Locked mode threshold vs B at constant n/nG SL: Granetz PO: wolfe EO: Pierson, Byford, Fitzgerald Irby and Blip ran off a series of gas puff tests before the run actually got underway, trying to debug the problems with the before/after RGA data. First real shot was #4. Target values were n/nG=0.17, q95=3.2, B=3,4,5.4,6,7T (we wanted 8T as well, but Jim wouldn't let us). The A-coil was configured in standard suppression orientation +Dt -Db -Jt +Jb. The idea was to ramp the acoil down to induce a locked mode with the intrinsic error inadequately compensated. We ended up with q95~3.4 instead of 3.2, but otherwise things went more or less as planned. The machine ran well except that disruption recovery is still problematic; we had very few cases of two shots in a row. All of the failed starts were fizzles except one unexplained dud on shot 7 (and one power system dud on shot 14 -- see below). It turned out that the threshold for all these conditions was very close to the intrinsic error field. Most of the data points were obtained ramping the A-coil down from ~1500A to zero. Typically the locked modes happened around 1.3-1.5 sec, with the acoil current near zero. We ran a couple of tries with acoil ramping up to maximum to try reversing the intrinsic error. One of these (#17 at 4T) had a very early locked mode at a lower "model" b21, while the other (#21 at 6T had no locked mode and was our only full length plasma of the day.) An attempt to re-do the 4T point bringing the acoil up more slowly on shot26 was a fizzle. Problems -------- We had one dud due to a failure of the commutation switches on the OH2's to close; this was apparently related to the water having been inadvertantly turned off when the RF went home. We had a computer meltdown after shot 21, and ended up taking a couple of no-power cycles before trying for plasma again. Scorecard --------- tests 5 duds 2 fizzles 9 plasmas 10 ------- -- shots 26 |

| Mar 1 2005 10:26:12:470AM | Steve Wolfe | Correction to the density-
Bob wants to use n/n_G = 0.17, which seems to correspond to 2e19 for ITER at 15MA. This means I need to adjust the nl04 value to 0.74e20 for the 5.4T, 1.1MA case, which seems to be more like nR/B = 0.15 than 0.2 The rest of the density settings are in Bob's logbook entry from 10:03AM | |

Increase pg4 puff to 20msec (was 13 from 1050218027) Disrupted in rampdown Got a warning on baseline offset on f15 -2.8e-3 looks like it happened at the disruption. Possible locked mode in rampdown around 1.7sec Looks like the acoil is overcorrecting by a lot. According to the model, the intrinsic gets to 7G at 1.5sec, 5G at 1.0sec The applied field at 3kA is 9G next shot: change acoil to ramp from 2000A to 1000A at 1.5sec |

a coil ramping up 1300@0.5sec->3500@1.4sec (1800->4000 program) pg4 still at 14msec raise current limits on OH1 to 30kA, since 19 railed at the end plasma full length There seems to be a data problem. Update server seemed to not work. It doesn't look like we had a locked mode on this one. Model says total b21 never got over 3.5G, so it's not too surprising Earl finally got his pellet in. Next shot: 7T |
| Mar 1 2005 05:39:53:500PM | 1050301022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: 7T, 1.43MA, .96e20 nl04

a coil ramping down 1500@0.5sec->0@1.4sec (2000->500 program) ic_ef4 from 2000->3000 in seg2 pg4 still at 14msec fizzle, even after all that time it still looks like a slow current rise. Bz looks a bit positive, relative to earlier shots. I'm going to leave it alone and just try again. |
| Mar 1 2005 06:52:30:157PM | 1050301025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: repeat 7T, 1.43MA, .96e20 nl04
a coil ramping down 1500@0.5sec->0@1.4sec (2000->500 program) ic_ef4 from 2000->3000 in seg2 pg4 still at 14msec Plasma to 1.6sec, disrupted in rampdown locked mode at 1.33sec, breakers puled out late, after the disruption and after the TF was already down. Phase sequence errors; looks like we pulled the alternator down? Next shot: re-try at 4T, like #17, but try to delay it. |
| Mar 1 2005 07:17:59:707PM | 1050301026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: re-try at 4T, .81MA, .55e20
A-coil program ramping up from 0@0.2s to 4000@1.4 fizzle. That's all. |
