| Run Plan for 1050304 MP#409 "SOL Phase space studies" - Day 1 Overall Goal Map out the 'phase space' of the SOL plasma, i.e. the relationships between the 'transport state' (profile shapes, gradients, cross-field fluxes, advection velocities, turbulence characteristics) and theory-based 'control parameters' (local collisionality, magnetic field strengths, parallel connection length,...) that may determine that state. Today's Goals The focus today is on Ip=0.8 MA, Bt=5.4 tesla LSN and USN equilibria for the widest range of plasma densities possible. We will be coordinating measurements from a number of diagnostics: scanning probes (in Mach and fluctuation modes), divertor probes, GPI imaging (including fast diodes), Xybion imaging of time-averaged background D-alpha, and boron V spectroscopy. Run Preparation Tasks (for probe diagnostics) - Reconfigure A14 and A12 digitizer connections to outer divertor probe array according to file: "put_new_fast_refs_2005_mar01.tcl" - Execute TCL>@put_new_fast_refs_2005_mar01.tcl - Configure ASP bias supplies: PA93 amplifiers ("DC supply") in standard sweep mode, "Sweep A" and "Sweep B" set to -200 volts - Write code to switch ASP probe triggering and ASP/FMP power supply biases between one of two modes: "Scan" mode - ASP: N,S,E,W electrodes in current mode, "DC supply" Probe scanning three times during shot, 256k samples/channel FMP: OSD**.p0 probes in current mode, "Sweep B" supply OSD**.p1 probes in current mode, "DC -" supply OSD**.p2 probes in floating mode, "DC +" supply "Dwell" mode - ASP: W & S electrodes in current mode, "Sweep A" & "Sweep B" N & E electrodes in floating mode Probe in dwell mode, with 512k samples/channel FMP: OSD**.p0 probes in current mode, "DC -" supply OSD**.p1 probes in current mode, "DC -" supply OSD**.p2 probes in floating mode, "DC +" supply IDL code: mp409_scan.pro undwell_scan_asp.pro set_asp_pa93_sweep.pro set_fmp_sweep.pro mp409_dwell.pro dwell_scan_asp.pro set_asp_fluctuation_mp409.pro set_fmp_fluctuation_mp409.pro Run Preparation Tasks (for optical diagnostics) - Set integration time on Xybion to 1 ms - Connect the following fiber views for the fast diodes Outer SOL views 1-3,5,7,9-14,31-40 (total of 21) Innerwall SOL views B and C - Connect the following fiber views for the CHROMEX Outer SOL views 18-22,24-29 (total of 11) Innerwall SOL views A,D,E,F - otherwise known as 1,4-6 - Set timing on fastdiode digitizers to 0.1 s after the A-B limiter NINJA puff timing Plan Load from shot#1050217013. | Run Summary for 1050304 MP#409 "SOL Phase space studies" - Day 1 ___________________________________________________________________________________ We got off to a reasonable start today on this MP, which has the ambitious goal of systematically mapping out the plasma conditions in the edge (profiles, turbulence, cross-field fluxes) over a wide range of currents, field, and densities. Today the focus was on 0.8 MA, 5.4 tesla discharges in lower and upper null over a range of densities. Yes, we have been here before, but not with the full set of diagnostics used today: new Mach probe on the ASP drive, GPI, fast diodes, inner- wall probe and vertical probe, boron Doppler spectroscopy in the inner wall, Xybion camera taking 0.5 ms 'snapshots' of edge plasma D-alpha (to be converted into ionization) profiles. We managed to get through about 3/4 of the shots planned for today. The diagnostics performed well and we were able to keep them from burning up (probes) or saturating there signals (cameras), despite the tedium of the discharges. We are particularly excited about the new Mach probe. It seems to be working well. Noah was able to produce some rough profiles of parallel and perpendicular Mach numbers by the end of the day. Upper single null discharges are clearly different than lower single null, beyond just the obvious x-point location difference and the differences in SOL flows seen previously. By eyeball on raw scope data, they tend to have lower temperatures near the separatrix and gradients appear to be not as steep. This needs to be checked with more careful analysis. Another very clear difference is the MARFE behavior. For example, shot#22 (USN) and #24 (LSN) were nearly identical in density, yet the USN discharge was bitten badly by a MARFE on the inner wall (below midplane). In fact, we had abandoned the idea of running USN discharges beyond NL04 ~ 1.1e20 because of this observation. No matter, we did not have time to run any of these anyway. We got some good data in density ramp-up discharges (best shots: 16, 18, 27, 28). For these, the A-port probe was dwelled 6 mm outside the separatrix, taking continuous Isat and Vf data for a duration of 0.5s at 1MHz sampling. We hope that these data will reveal if the character of the turbulence changes as some fraction of the Greenwald density is approached. We will need to finish the high density discharges in this series in the next available run day - probably skipping the USN discharges. | Machine ran well today. Shots 1 to 4 were lower hybrid and firewire camera test shots. wasted He3 from shot 5 to shot 11. We had a few problems with fluxloop f27. The disruptions on shots 21 and 22 and the fizzle on 23 were probably the result of an error in this fluxloop. It seems to have fixed itself on shot 24. We also had problems with an impressive marfe during USL operation. Plasma was very cold at the edge and the NINJA puff did not show much ionization until well off the wall (see f-wide view on shot 26 for example). Lower hybrid system was run between shots today and coupled power into vacuum for the first time. New firewire camera at k-hor looking into the polarimeter window at the inner wall showed some interesting UFO events. H/(H+D) was low all day partially because of high densities run. | Mar 4 2005 05:29:06:640PM | 1050304022 | Jim Irby | dropped prepuff by 1 ms from 18 to 17 ms plasma to 1.45 s. Still have large marfe |
| Mar 4 2005 05:40:38:047PM | 1050304023 | Jim Irby | back to LSN (seg 2) density request 1e20/m^2 pressure at check 1.4e-6 fizzle --- gas looks low Bz0 looks high |
| Mar 4 2005 05:58:10:140PM | 1050304024 | Jim Irby | increased prepuff from 18 to 19 ms ef4 from -1365 to -1375 pressure at check 8.1e-7 Torr plasma into rampdown (note: fluxloop f27 has had problems since shot 21. May have caused disruptions and fizzle on 23) h/(h+d) around 5% |
| Mar 4 2005 06:06:10:063PM | 1050304025 | Jim Irby | USN, 1e20/m^2 fizzle --- not because of f27 though |
| Mar 4 2005 06:24:18:250PM | 1050304026 | Jim Irby | repeat plasma into rampdown --- marfe, marfe, marfe... going to lsn again.. |
| Mar 4 2005 06:43:59:267PM | 1050304027 | Jim Irby | back to LSN in seg 2 density ramp: 0.5 to 1.2 s, 0.8 to 1.8e20 /m^2 plasma barely into rampdown: 1.59 s : detachment, nl04 at 2.7e20/m^2 |
| Mar 4 2005 06:48:53:000PM | 1050304028 | Jim Irby | repeat, but with more gas from NINJA fizzle --- too much gas |
| Mar 4 2005 07:00:33:170PM | 1050304029 | Jim Irby | moved ratiomatic store action from 55 to 45 --- we have been getting data at 5 minutes into store prepuff from 18 to 17 ms (one shot too late) plasma into rampdown h/(h+d) at 5% |
