Continuation of MP417 - "Plasma performance, boronization and ICRF
heating effectiveness with high-Z antenna guards and all metal surface"

Aims:

1) Density scan at constant RF power.
2) Optimize H-mode
2a) Puff into H-mode. (Had one promising shot. 1050401001, starting
puff at 0.9 sec. More to explore)
2b) Raise Ip to 1.2 MA (ELM free H-mode?)
3) Measure wall pumping with RF

Specifics:
gate valve closure on the first 2 shots, ECDC thereafter. Switch back in
step 3
NINJA puff setup (fill to 10 PSI D2)
B-side lower to 3 PSI Ne (not enabled to begin with)

1) start out at low density using earlier shot (1050401001). RF power
3MW, nl04=0.7e20
~ 2 shots to optimize startup and RF (gate valve closed)
~ 3 shots, raising the target density to nl04=1.4e20 (ECDC on
between shots from this point, NINJA from this point at around 1 sec).
RF from 0.65 to 1.5 seconds.

2) Optimize H-mode
2a) reproduce 1050401019 and then increase the puff at the time used
and lengthen it out (2-3 shots). Try shifting it earlier to the ELM free
period (2 shots). Try increasing the gap to the antenna and poloidal
limiters (2 shots).
2b) Raise current to 1.2 MA with best condition from 2a. (2 shots)
2c) puff Ne to reduce cool edge and reduce Mo source?

3) Take optimal shot from 2a or 2b, reload it to see if it reproduces,
and try with gate valve closed (no ECDC)
3a - same density (2 shots)
3b - vary density from nl04 0f 0.7 to 1.4e20 (4 shots)

4) If time allows then we will try the B density measurement through gas
puffing and no RF

The machine ran pretty smoothly today. We did not learn very much new infromation about RF heating in an unboronized machine. The time was mainly useful from the point of view of properly documenting the plasma performance and what affects it for pre-boronization discharges.

1) In the density scan higher densities led to improved stored energy but not a strong effect. The radiated power may have dropped slightly (2-> 1.7 MW) with increasing density.

2) The puffing of gas into H-mode did tend to keep the stored energy up. Increasing it and moving it around in the pulse did not seem to help. It did lead to problems with the J antenna because the puffing raised the midplane pressure. Raising the current to 1.2 MA (shot 12 - 24) raised the stored energy only slightly. Shot 13 seems to be an anomaly in that the RF power dropped to 2 MW and yet the stored energy was as high as the 3 MW casees (125 kJ). Ne puffing did not lower the Mo source rate nor help the H-modes.

3) Shot 26 and onward had the gate valve closed (along with shots 1-2). We got a range in densities with 1 MA plasmas leading to a range in pressures in the machine after the shot (3-10 mT). The mass 4/3 ratio varied being the highest at high density. We need further analysis to look at the wall pumping.

A reasonable run from the physop point of view. We managed 5 minutes of ECDC after most plasma shots, and
got 31 total cycles for the day. Startup was pretty good, with 25 plasmas. Fizzles started after the first neon
puff (shot 17), but it's not clear if this was causal. Bz was drifting up, and the fill needed attention.
We got into a fizzle/plasma alternating sequence, but managed to get 6 plasmas in a row to end the day.

Two shots had early disruptions (1 and 3) probably related to trying to get the density up too fast for the
rate of current rise, resulting in early marfes.

Early hard x-rays were a problem on most shots.

Shot 11 was a no-power cycle because of a TF permissive problem. Shot 19 was a dud because there was no prefill
puff; probably a PLC state communication problem.
