| Run plan for MP417 (post-boronization)
MP417 (day 1 of post-boronization) "Plasma performance, boronization and ICRF heating effectiveness with high-Z antenna guards and all metal surface" The run will be part of the Level 1 JOULE target of FY 2005. It is the first run post-boronization of MP417. Goals: We will study the plasma behavior at different RF power, density, current and compare to results obtained pre-boronization and also from previous campaigns. Gas setup: Setup for usual plasma operation. No special gas puffing required for this run. --------------------------------------- Shot Sequence: Use shot 1050329013 as the configuration for the fiducial plasma. LSN, 5.4 T, 1 MA, nl = 0.9e20 m^-2. In most shots, a 20 ms notch will be programed in the RF pulse. We will run the fiducial shots, and bring up to the RF power to as high as we can. It will take approximately 10 shots if we are lucky. 2 shots: Antenna comparison in H-modes (B = 5.2 T) A shot with D+E (2 MW, 0.6-0.9 sec) and J (2 MW, 1.0-1.3 sec), the other with D+E (2 MW, 1.0-1.3 sec) and J (2 MW, .6-.9 sec). (These shots can be done in combination with the boronization recovery). 4-8 shots: Performance at RF power scan. RF power at 1.5, 2, 3, 4 MW. Same power from each transmitter. Fiducial plasma. (If the performance is really good, we will try to get the max power available at 1 MA and 1.2 MA, and aim at 300 kJ plasmas) 7 shots: Performance vs density. Density scan nl04 = 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3e20 m^-2 at the max RF power. 6 shots: L-H threshold. Ramping up RF power from 0.5 to 3 MW. Density scan nl04 = 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2e20 m^-2. Also current scan at 0.8 MA and 1.0 MA. |

| SL summary:
A good run. Found plasma performance was back close to 96-98 levels in several shots. H89 was close to 2 for ELMfree H-modes and at ~ 1.5-1.8 for EDAish H-modes. Good shots: 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 22, 23, 25. Shot 13 had near record Wmhd at ~ 230 kJ at 4 MW RF power. Density scan done. (Higher density, more EDAish as expected.) Struggled in running and RF coupling at 1.2 MA. Later in the day, Mo level started to go up. H/D level was at 5 to 6% the whole day. It is the first(?) time that H/D level did not come down after boronization. (We did not do ECDC before the run) We will use shot 25 as fiducial shot in the future. It had the right equilibrium and density. The H-mode was also good. |

| This was the first run following boronization. The machine ran well with the first shot of the day running into rampdown. Though performance degraded during the day, we were doing very well during the early part of the run with 130 kJ requiring 2 MW of rf power. Stored energies as high as 228 kJ were obtained at 4 MW power levels. Shot 14 was a very nice 4 MW, 200 kJ shot with a decreasing PRAD_MAIN during the H-Mode period. Some tuning of the gas following disruptions would probably had prevented a fizzle or two. A locked mode developed on shot 29 when we went from 1 to 1.2 MA. This problem was fixed by moving the a-coil start time to 0.31 s. Some tuning of the "fiducial" was done to increase the outer gap and to move the strike-point down and off the outer divertor nose. The outer gap changes were completed by shot 24 but the changes to rxl were not finished until shot 32. H/(H+D) actually increased today following the boronization, something we have never seen before (generally a couple of percent higher than on 1050415). On the other hand, Bruce reports much lower Mo, F, and O levels. We will try ECDC in D2 overnight and see if we do better tomorrow. The RGA showed a typical spectrum for a boronized machine. The RGA also showed masses 49 and 69 back up again with the rf. We had a couple of data system slowdowns today, but lost no data. The 2Pi diode was behaving strangely today and seemed to saturate at around 400 kW. tests 01,02 duds fizzles 05,08,16,18,27,30,33 plasmas 03,04,06,07,09,10,11,12,13,14, 15,17,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26, 28,29,31,32 |

| Apr 20 2005 07:58:44:913AM | Jim Irby | Following the run on Friday, 4/15, the first boronization of the 2005 Campaign was carried out. The boronization used 120psi of deuterated diborane, with the ecdc resonance location swept from 0.54m to 0.92m, a range which covers the divertor region and extends out to the outboard limiters, but does not include the inner or outer vessel wall. Following the boronization, which was completed at about 05:00 on Saturday morning, discharge cleaning was carried out in helium for a period of 24 hours. | |
