| Engineering setup for Wednesday, 27 Apr 2005 MP 415: Rotation and H-mode Power Threshold for LSN and USN at Different Ip and ne Session leader: John Rice Physics operator: Jim Irby ECDC in D2 at 2e-4 Torr overnight at 60 C Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00. We will start with a standard fiducial (1050426001) with 2 MW of rf The gatevalves should be setup to toggle closed --- bypass at 160 clicks For MP415 we will start off with 1050330024 (800 kA, LSN) A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled. Gas Setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 2 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) leave B-side upper with whatever Hybrid disabled fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) fill NINJA with 10 psi D2 but leave disabled Enable the following gate valves: ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters ICRF Setup: All transmitters in run on at 8:30 *************************************** Starting around 05:00 lower hybrid conditioning is planned before the run. This activity should stop at 08:00 and ECDC should be started and run for 30 minutes. *************************************** |

| Session Leader Run Summary for 1050427 MP415 Rotation and H-mode Power Threshold Before mapping out the rotation and H-mode power threshold at plasma currents other than 0.8 MA, LSN 0.8 MA discharges were run in order to touch base with previous results. Several discharges were run with increasing ICRF power in order to determine the H-mode power theshold. Today it was near 2.1 MW, considerably higher than the 0.8 MW of previous results. Following that, several USN discharges were run and the threshold was determined to be 3.1 MW, only slightly higher than the previous result of 2.9 MW. However, the H-mode transition in all of these USN plasmas was preceded by a giant sawtooth, which was not seen previously. Since these results were not in agreement with previous experiments, little progress was made. The final shot was a 1.0 MA 'fiducial' which had a low threshold of about 0.8 MW, much lower than the 0.8 MA result, and this discharge had considerable argon puffing. It is a mystery why the previous results could not be reproduced; the H-mode transition seems to occur when the core rotation passed through 0, but why the threshold power was so much higher will require further investigation. |

| The machine ran well. Startups were very reproducible once the physop realized the prefill was too low following the first plasma. We began with the ICRF 1 MA, ramp to 3 MW, fiducial discharge on shot 3 following 2 cycle tests to make sure the data system was okay. The L-H transition power was pretty high at around 2 MW for this discharge, probably because of an injection. H/(H+D) was very low at 3 to 3.5%. The last shot of the day (36) was also a fiducial, but the transition power was back to a more reasonable 850 to 900 kW. Unfortunately the LN configuration picked to run the mini-proposal required considerably more power to get into H-Mode and several shots were required for us to scan the ICRF power, drop the density, and make other adjustments to get reasonable data for the mini-proposal. On shot 21 we switched easily over to upper null operation. Unfortunately neither the PO or the SL told Brian about the change, and we did some damage to the scanning probes. The gaps were not the same as the shot that was loaded and a couple of discharges were required to tune up the plasma before the probes could be run again. H/(H+D) stayed at the 4% or lower level most of the day. Lower hybrid vacuum conditioning was run from about 05:00 to 08:00 before this run. About 30 minutes of ECDC in deuterium followed the conditioning in case there was something to "clean-up". The RGA showed very little other than D and H. The lower hybrid system was also run during the plasma discharges starting at 1.4 s. There was no indication that either the vacuum conditioning or the plasma operation affected the run. 10 to 15 minute delay getting alternator up to speed --- NSTAR related test 01,02 02 dud 04,05,08 03 fizzle 18 01 plasma 03,06,07,09,10,11,12,13,14,15 16,17,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26 27,28,29,30,31,32,33,34,35,36 30 total cycles 36 |
