Engineering Setup for Tuesday, 3 May 2005 MP 417. Post-boronization evaluation Session leader: Y. Lin Physop: R. Parker Boronize overnight, mainly to outer limiters and antennas, followed by 2+ hours of ECDC in D2 Run begins at 09:00 and amy extend to 21:00 Power systems as on 1050429001 (fidicial) Gas setup: fill B-top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 2 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid disabled fill B-main(C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG3) fill Ninja with 8 psi N2 Leave disabled to begin Torvac setup: Machine gate valves closed for first shot, open thereafter Enable Gate Valves (assuming no vacuum problems) for ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters ICRF: All transmitters in run on at 8:30 SL Run Plan: After fidicial shot (with gate valves closed) and boronization recovery: 1. Load shot 1050426022 (including D2 puff in H-mode). Slightly modified RF waveform. 3 MW from 0.7 to 0.95 sec, 4 MW from 0.95 sec to 1.15 sec, and 5 MW from 1.15 to 1.5 sec. Do a density scan in the first 3 shots, target density at nl = 1.1, 0.9, 1.3e20 m^-2. For the subsequent shots, choose the density that give the best long EDA H-mode Assess the boronization effectiveness using the first 15 plasmas. 2. Decision point. A. If the performance is excellent (Wtot >= 170 kJ at 3 MW RF), we will continue running the same 1 MA plasmas until we see definite degradation of performance. (criterion: Wtot <~ 150 kJ at 1 MA and 3 MW Prf.) the run will stop as soon as there are three consecutive plasmas meeting the degraded performance criterion. In this case, we possibly run until 9 pm. No boronization will be followed. B. If the boronization has worn out substantially after 15 plasmas (150 kJ < Wtot < 165 kJ at 3 MW, 1 MA), we will continue 1 MA shot until we see three plasmas with Wtot <~ 150 kJ at 3 MW and 1 MA. If time allows (earlier than 5 pm), we will try boron shaker to inject boron to the outer limiter. We will also try Li-pellet injection. And see whether there is an improvement on the performance. In this case, the run will probably stop at 5 pm. No boronization will be followed. C. If the boronization is shown to be a "bust" (3 consecutive plasmas at Wtot < 150 kJ at 1 MA, 3 MW Prf), we will try the boron shaker and Li-pellet injections. We may also do N2 puff into RF heated L-mode and identify the dominant Mo sources. In this case, the run will definitely stop at 5 pm. Following this run, we will boronize the machine in a "normal" (to be defined) way. |

| MP #408a Alfven cascade studies during the current ramp with early ICRF and imporved n number measurements The run day started with a number of problems, inlcuding PCI alignment and feedback control problems, 1 fizzle, 2 duds, and 2 disruptions. Perhaps most troublesome for the day was annoying, though fortunate, discovery that the magnetics time base for one digitizer was shifted by about 80ms. Alfven activity was first observed on shot 5, mainly in the form of TAE's with some sign of small cascade activity. Initial density was higher than the chosen target density by about a factor of 1.5. It was decided that an attempt would be made to lower the density to the desired nl_04 level of 0.5. After several unsuccessful attempts resulting in disruptions at shots 11 and 12, we went back to the conditions from shot 6. Subsequently we ran at densities of about 0.7-0.8 in nl_04 and were quite usccessful in obtaining Alfven activity. The intention of the run plan was to establish threshhold values for ICRF power needed to drive the cascade modes unsable. Scans were conducted at field values of 4.8, 5.0, 5.4, and 5.8 T. For the 4.8T shots, the results are only partially conclusive. The ICRf power was not as stable as we would have liked, tripping at about 0.1 sec. Still, this showed that at values of 2.5 and 3.0 MW only the downward chirping mode was excited. This is in agreement with Joe Snipes' results from last year and Zonca's predictions for the high field side instability. The power scans at the higher fields had excellent ICRF stability and repeatability. These scans showed that the threshoold for the cascade modes was somewhere between 2.0 and 2.5 MW. The 5.8T power scan showed no definite cascade activity, though many of the cascade/TAE transitions even at the 2.0 MW level. We were not able to get stable ICRF power at the 3.0 and 3.5 power levels. Overall, the run was partially successful in establishing alfven activty thresholds and serves as a good compliment to the studies from April 2004. |

| The run started off slowly because of computer problems and PCI problems, but by running short shots, we managed to make up for it to some extent. For inexplicable reasons, there were 3 duds. A 2 ms change in the prefill and a later 0.4 mT drop in Br0 kept the duds away until the next to last shot. Then, a small drop in EF4 gave us the final shot. Alfven cascades were observed on a number of shots and a power and TF scan were performed. Overall, the results were not too bad, but not as clear cut as we would have liked. The inboard heating at 4.8 T still led to weak downward sweeping modes as before and no upward sweeping cascades or TAEs. However, at 5.0 T, we could get clear cascades and TAEs. | Apr 29 2005 09:23:06:587AM | 1050429001 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 1: Loaded shot 1050428003 for a fiducial. After some delay due to computer issues, we finally got a good fiducial shot. |
| Apr 29 2005 09:48:14:853AM | 1050429002 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 2: Loaded shot 1050427024 and chopped off nl04 at 5 x 10^19 m^-2. Set the TF rampdown to begin at 0.6 s allowing 0.1 s after the ICRF switches off at 0.5 s for the LH to do tests. Physop screwed up and changed segment 2 when it was segment 4 that was active. So, we got a copy of 1050427024 with RF in the current rise instead. |
| Apr 29 2005 10:01:32:697AM | 1050429003 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 3: Now, chopped off nl04 at 5 x 10^19 m^-2 in segment 4 and set the TF rampdown to begin at 0.6 s allowing 0.1 s after the ICRF switches off at 0.5 s for the LH to do tests. This is an upper single null discharge to keep the plasma from going into H-mode. Fizzle! |
| Apr 29 2005 10:13:59:103AM | 1050429004 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 4: Fields looked fine. Lowered prepuff by 2 ms to 18 ms duration. Also changed plasma current to ramp down at 0.5 s with the TF. Good shot. |
| Apr 29 2005 10:30:37:383AM | 1050429005 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 5: Changed the plasma current to begin rampdown at 0.6 s for the LH tests. Reduced preprogrammed gas puff in the current rise to try to lower the density early, but still avoid runaways. Disrupted at 0.72 s due to LH induced impurities. LH switching off for the next shot. |
| Apr 29 2005 10:45:08:570AM | 1050429006 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 6: Reduced preprogrammed gas puff in segment 4 by another 15% or so to try to bring the early density down. Good shot. Nice cascades from 0.14 to 0.24 s. |
| Apr 29 2005 11:31:31:197AM | 1050429007 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 7: Reduced preprogrammed gas puff in segment 4 by another 15% or so to try to bring the early density down. Dud. |
| Apr 29 2005 11:31:54:150AM | 1050429008 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 8: Unclear why shot 6 did not go. Try again. Dud again. |
| Apr 29 2005 11:36:46:260AM | 1050429009 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 9: Raised prepuff by 2 ms to 20 ms duration. Got plasma. Disrupted at 0.52 s. A single frequency sweeping cascade around 0.16 s from 200 to 400 kHz similar to 960223047 though there are some more TAEs around 450 kHz as well. |
| Apr 29 2005 11:55:08:070AM | 1050429010 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 10: Reduced early gas in segment 1 slightly to try to lower the density in the current rise. Once again disrupted at 0.49 s. |
| Apr 29 2005 12:13:17:150PM | 1050429011 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 11: Ian points out there is too much Moly radiation. So, I've tried increasing CLEARIN to divert the plasma just after 0.1 s. This time it disrupted earlier at 0.32 s. |
| Apr 29 2005 12:22:49:540PM | 1050429012 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 12: Tried increasing CLEARIN to divert earlier. Disrupted again at 0.33 sec. Too much Moly early. |
| Apr 29 2005 12:25:25:057PM | 1050429013 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 13: Reduced CLEARIN and RCUR to limit against the inner wall and pull the plasma away from the RF antennas early in the current rise. Hard x rays and disrupted at 0.43 s. |
| Apr 29 2005 12:47:09:383PM | 1050429014 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 14: Reloaded shot 1050429006. Reduced early gas in segment 1 to attempt to go to lower density than shot 6. Disrupted at 0.49 s. |
| Apr 29 2005 01:01:11:633PM | 1050429015 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 15: Reloaded shot 1050429006 again. Corrected mismatch at segment switch in TF current. Raised nl04 slightly in both segment 1 and segment 4 to try to reduce Zeff early. Disrupted at 0.66 s. Got the cascades back. Good shot. |
| Apr 29 2005 01:09:44:963PM | 1050429016 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 16: Try RF power scan. Decreased RCUR before 0.1 s in segment 1 and again after 0.1 s in segment 4. Good shot. |
| Apr 29 2005 01:26:01:133PM | 1050429017 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 17: Changed TF and Ip rampdowns to start at 0.5 s. Reduced RCUR early to attempt to pull the plasma away from the RF antenna at 0.1 s. Good shot. Upper null H-mode at 2.5 MW at 0.44 s. Cascades have returned. |
| Apr 29 2005 01:35:24:103PM | 1050429018 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 18: Reduced TF current to 138 kA to reach 5.0 T in both segment 1 and segment 4. CAMAC 2 server problem. Failed in INIT. No power test shot. |
| Apr 29 2005 01:56:56:963PM | 1050429019 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 19: Try again to get 5 T. Plasma current dives at 0.96 s perhaps due to an impurity injection. Plasma recovers but is not a very good shot. |
| Apr 29 2005 02:19:17:570PM | 1050429020 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 20: Try again to get a decent 5 T shot. Better shot. Disrupted at 0.75 s. Nice cascades from 0.06 to 0.14 s. |
| Apr 29 2005 02:38:09:447PM | 1050429021 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 21: Repeat at 2 MW to check the cascade threshold at 5 T. Good shot. Downward sweeping AE. |
| Apr 29 2005 02:56:19:197PM | 1050429022 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 22: Moving to 5.8 T. Forgot to change the TF current so this shot was a repeat of shot 21. |
| Apr 29 2005 03:25:37:120PM | 1050429023 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 23: Now, TF changed to 5.8 T by setting the TF current to 160 kA. Good shot. Tops of the cascades are clearly visible. |
| Apr 29 2005 03:26:28:493PM | 1050429024 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 24: TF at 5.8 T at higher RF power but with faults. Good shot. More cascades are visible. |
| Apr 29 2005 03:48:36:480PM | 1050429025 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 25: Repeat to try to get a cleaner RF waveform. RF still faulted but otherwise it is a good shot. |
| Apr 29 2005 03:56:23:103PM | 1050429026 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 26: Try to get a clean 2.5 MW of RF. Good clean 2.5 MW data. Weak cascades. |
| Apr 29 2005 04:21:02:563PM | 1050429027 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 27: Go to 3.5 MW at 5.8 T. RF reached 3.5 MW but tripped early. Got some brief cascades. |
| Apr 29 2005 04:22:29:550PM | 1050429028 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 28: Go to 3 MW at 5.8 T. RF reached 3 MW but tripped early. Got some brief cascades. |
| Apr 29 2005 04:44:41:110PM | 1050429029 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 29: Go to 4.8 T. Disrupted at 0.31 s. One downward sweeping mode from 350 to 250 kHz from 0.165 to 0.185 s. |
| Apr 29 2005 04:48:01:500PM | 1050429030 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 30: More power Scottie! Dud! |
| Apr 29 2005 05:14:36:033PM | 1050429031 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 31: It seems the vertical field changed by 2 mT from earlier in the day. So, I lowered EF4 by 25 A to -1385 A. Good shot again with a couple of weak downward sweeping modes and no cascades or TAEs. |
