| We will continue with antenna recovery effort. We aim to obtain 0.5
sec, 1.25 MW/xmtr and will condition first with short high power pulses followed by lower power, longer pulses. Hopefully the shower of injections associated with antenna operation, particularly D antenna, will clean up. The discharges will be plain vanilla fiducials. |

Continued recovery from vacuum opening and Ti dust Nominal MP #355: ICRF Conditioning Session leader: S. Wukitch Physics operator: R. Parker Overnight ECDC in D2, 2.e-4 torr; Bake at 60 C. Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00. Power systems as on 1050524032 (1.05 MA, 5.4 T vanilla plasma) A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled. Gas Setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper with whatever Hybrid disabled fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) NINJA not used today Torvac setup: machine gate valves to remain open for first shot. We may run a gate valve closed shot during run to evaluate effective wall condition. Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters Necessary diagnostics: titanium monitoring, video monitors, H/D ratio ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ICRF Setup: All transmitters in run on at 08:30. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run plan: Bring up ICRF to reliable high power level. |

| This run was devoted to RF conditioning, in particular to bringing power
up in D-port antenna. D-port, being closest to the LH antenna, seems to have the most Ti dust. See SL summary for an assessment of the day's progress or lack thereof. The machine ran very well today, with the same shot (1.05 MA, 5.4 T) repeatedly loaded. The first 22 shots went off without fizzle, dud or disruption. Beginning with shot 23, some problems with disruptions were encountered and this led to a short alternating sequence of disruption-fizzle, etc. Shots 31-34 recovered to full rampdown as was the case for earlier shots 3-22. It was found useful to turn off the RF at 1.4 s in order to reduce the density during rampdown and extend the rampdown to nearly zero current. Scorecard: 34 shots, 2 fizzles, 4 disruptions (plus 2 disruptions in rampdown) and 28 shots with current rampdown to essentially zero current. |

| I took over for Ron from shot 24 to shot 33. Following the disruption on shot 23 it took us a few shot to recover full length discharges again after a couple of fizzles and shot length shots. Steve reduced rf power until the machine was running again. Most shots today showed dust injections from the D-Port antenna. The wide 2 view showed injections from the inner lower divertor also. We generally found lower h/(h+d) today, in the 8 to 10% range. Plasma startup was dramatically better. |

plasma into rampdown wide 2 very quiet h/(h+d) still 8 to 9% 2 MW rf, 130 kJ |
| May 25 2005 04:44:26:977PM | 1050525033 | Jim Irby | added 1 ms of gas --- allowing DNB to fire into the machine
