| We will continue with antenna recovery effort. We aim to obtain 0.5
sec, 1.25 MW/xmtr and will condition first with short high power pulses followed by lower power, longer pulses. Hopefully the shower of injections associated with antenna operation, particularly D antenna, will clean up. The discharges will start as vanilla fiducials and we will go to higher density and USN. If warranted, we may lower the field to 4.5 T and extend the shot to get more conditioning time. |

Continued recovery from vacuum opening and Ti dust Nominal MP #355: ICRF Conditioning Session leader: S. Wukitch Physics operator: J. Snipes Overnight ECDC in D2, 2.e-4 torr; Bake at 60 C. Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00. Power systems as on 1050524032 (1.05 MA, 5.4 T vanilla plasma) A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled. Gas Setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper with whatever Hybrid disabled fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) NINJA not used today Torvac setup: machine gate valves to remain open for first shot. We may run a gate valve closed shot during run to evaluate effective wall condition. Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters Necessary diagnostics: titanium monitoring, video monitors, H/D ratio ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ICRF Setup: All transmitters in run on at 08:30. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run plan: Bring up ICRF to reliable high power level. May try going to lower field (4.5 T) and 2 s pulse lengths to increase the RF on time in plasma. May also try upper null discharges to clean other areas of the vessel. |

| Run Summary
For the second day, E port was best on the first shot and then degraded. We had more success when the power was lowered and slowly raised thereafter (same for J). It appears joules are the best measure of antenna conditioning and the best path appears to be long pulses (generally requiring lower power than the peak power). There is some evidence that USN is better for RF operation 008 -> 010 (LSN->USN); 017->018 (USN->LSN); and 025->026 (LSN->USN). We are making progress on D finally and E and J are coming along well. |

| It was a good run and rather easy for the physop. We only varied the density slightly and ran two series of lower then upper null discharges. Almost all discharges were full length, though there were a few disruptions near the end of the day. The ICRF performance seems to be slowly improving as the plasmas clean up, but Ti dust was still present at the end. The machine ran very well with no engineering or computer problems.

| May 26 2005 01:09:02:233PM | 1050526019 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 19: Repeat. Good shot. Disrupted in rampdown at 1.7 s. |
| May 26 2005 01:19:42:013PM | 1050526020 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 20: Increased EF4 current from -1310 A to -1300 A again. Decreased Br0 by
0.5 mT to -0.5 mT. Increased nl04 to 8 x 10^19 m^-3. Good shot. |
| May 26 2005 01:34:39:263PM | 1050526021 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 21: Repeat. Good shot. Ramped nearly all the way down. |
| May 26 2005 01:47:02:093PM | 1050526022 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 22: Repeat. Good shot. Ramped nearly all the way down. |
| May 26 2005 02:01:31:547PM | 1050526023 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 23: Repeat. Good shot. Ramped nearly all the way down to 1.98 s. |
| May 26 2005 02:17:19:030PM | 1050526024 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 24: Repeat. Good shot. Ramped nearly all the way down. |
| May 26 2005 02:26:56:390PM | 1050526025 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 25: Repeat. Good shot. Ramped nearly all the way down. |
| May 26 2005 02:39:26:483PM | 1050526026 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 26: Repeat. Good shot. Ramped nearly all the way down to 1.98 s. |
| May 26 2005 02:56:39:250PM | 1050526027 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 27: Reloaded shot 1050526017 to return to upper single null. Good shot. |
| May 26 2005 03:12:16:623PM | 1050526028 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 28: Repeat. Good shot. Ramped all the way down beyond 2 sec. |
| May 26 2005 03:30:31:530PM | 1050526029 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 29: Repeat. Good shot. Disrupted in rampdown at 1.79 s. |
| May 26 2005 03:42:10:900PM | 1050526030 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 30: Startup is beginning to look bad, but I'll let it go once more. Disrupted at 1.43 s with no obvious cause. It appears to be due to an impurity injection perhaps from E port ICRF or perhaps a UFO. |
| May 26 2005 03:52:07:010PM | 1050526031 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 31: Probably the startup will be different after the disruption anyway, but I've increased EF4 current by 10 A to -1290 A. Expect a fizzle. Good shot. Ramped all the way down. Incredible breakdown starting at 11.6 ms. |
| May 26 2005 04:05:47:710PM | 1050526032 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 32: Repeat. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.65 s. This shot has an even later breakdown at nearly 13 ms. |
| May 26 2005 04:23:07:930PM | 1050526033 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 33: Decreased EF4 current back to -1310 A. Disrupted early at 0.48 s for
no clear reason, perhaps a UFO. |
| May 26 2005 04:29:22:260PM | 1050526034 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 34: Decreased EF4 current to -1315 A to tweak the breakdown a little earlier.
Good shot. Ramped all the way down. Breakdown is a little later at 7.5 ms. |
| May 26 2005 04:45:11:853PM | 1050526035 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 35: Reduced Br0 again by 0.5 mT to -1 mT. Disrupted early at 0.46 s. The breakdown is now at 5.5 ms as usual, but it bounced. There were also runaways in the startup. |
| May 26 2005 04:57:49:040PM | 1050526036 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 36: Returned Br0 to -0.5 mT and added 2 ms to the prepuff to make it 23 ms duration. Disrupted at 1.42 s. |
