| Run Plan for 1050602 MP#409 "SOL Phase space studies" Overall Goal Map out the 'phase space' of the SOL plasma, i.e. the relationships between the 'transport state' (profile shapes, gradients, cross-field fluxes, advection velocities, turbulence characteristics) and theory-based 'control parameters' (local collisionality, magnetic field strengths, parallel connection length,...) that may determine that state. Today's Goals We will continue from the last time we attempted this MP (1050309), moving on to lower densities, currents and fields: Ip=0.4 MA, Bt=4.0 tesla and Ip=0.4 MA, Bt=2.7 tesla. If things go well, we will collect some high density data at the nominal Ip=0.8 MA, Bt=5.4 tesla values in lower single null - something we were not able to do last time. Run Preparation Tasks (for probe diagnostics) - Reconfigure A14 and A12 digitizer connections to outer divertor probe array according to file: "put_new_fast_refs_2005_mar01.tcl" - Execute TCL>@put_new_fast_refs_2005_mar01.tcl - Configure ASP bias supplies: PA93 amplifiers ("DC supply") in standard sweep mode, "Sweep A" and "Sweep B" set to -200 volts - Use IDL code to switch ASP probe triggering and ASP/FMP power supply biases between one of two modes: "Scan" mode - ASP: N,S,E,W electrodes in current mode, "DC supply" Probe scanning three times during shot, 256k samples/channel FMP: OSD**.p0 probes in current mode, "Sweep B" supply OSD**.p1 probes in current mode, "DC -" supply OSD**.p2 probes in floating mode, "DC +" supply "Dwell" mode - ASP: W & S electrodes in current mode, "Sweep A" & "Sweep B" N & E electrodes in floating mode Probe in dwell mode, with 512k samples/channel FMP: OSD**.p0 probes in current mode, "DC -" supply OSD**.p1 probes in current mode, "DC -" supply OSD**.p2 probes in floating mode, "DC +" supply IDL code: mp409_scan.pro undwell_scan_asp.pro set_asp_pa93_sweep.pro set_fmp_sweep.pro mp409_dwell.pro dwell_scan_asp.pro set_asp_fluctuation_mp409.pro set_fmp_fluctuation_mp409.pro Run Preparation Tasks (for optical diagnostics) - Set integration time on Xybion to 1 ms - Connect the following fiber views for the fast diodes Outer SOL views 1-3,5,7,9-14,31-40 (total of 21) Innerwall SOL views B and C - Connect the following fiber views for the CHROMEX Outer SOL views 18-22,24-29 (total of 11) Innerwall SOL views A,D,E,F - otherwise known as 1,4-6 - Set timing on fastdiode digitizers to 0.1 s after the A-B limiter NINJA puff timing Plan Start from shot#1050304024. This shot ran on segment#2. It was a LSN discharge with Ip=0.8 MA, Bt= 5.4 tesla, NL04 = 0.9e20. Note: segment#3 has a USN program that we will use (Segment#4 is double-null? will not be used today.) Engineering setup for Friday, 02 June 2005 MP 409 (con't): SOL Phase Space (day 3) Session leader: B. Labombard Physics operator: wolfe No Overnight ECDC in D2 (or anything else). Run begins at 9:00 and ends at 17:00. Power systems as on 1050304024, including A-coils Gas Setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 2 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) leave B-side upper with He3 Hybrid disabled fill B-main with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) Disable NINJA, but fill the plenum with 10 psi D2. Torvac setup: Gate valves open Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV, Zbolo shutter RF Setup: NO RF TODAY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run plan: This run calls for extremely low density, which may not be available given current state of the machine. If we are running into internal fueling problems, we may want to stop and either switch to a different part of MP#409, or else go back to the ICRF experiment that didn't get done on Wednesday. Start from 1050304024, with necessary PCS changes in all segments: Basically the baseline subtraction needs to be taken into account by removing the offsets in segs 2,3,4 and a recent startup needs to be used. Also, change seg2 (SNL) to 0.4MA, 4T, nl04=.5e20. Also, change seg3 (USN) to 0.4MA, 4T, nl04=.5e20 Shot sequence as in SL_PLAN: 1,2 LSN (seg2) nl04=.5 3,4 USN (seg3) nl04=.5 5 USN (seg3 ) nl04=.4 6 LSN (seg2) nl04 = .4 7 LSN (seg2) nl04 = .3 !! I don't believe we can do this 8 USN (seg3) nl04 = .3 !! I sure don't believe we can do this! 9 USN (seg3) nl04 = .2 !* You have got to be kidding!! 10 LSN (seg2) nl04 =.2 ! Ditto 11 LSN (seg2) nl04 =.6 ! That's more likely 12 USN (seg3) nl04 =.6 13 USN (seg3) nl04 =.7 ! Now you're talking! 14 LSN (seg2) nl04 =.7 Next, reduce field to 2.7 T (seg 2,3) 15 LSN (seg2) nl04 = .5 16 USN (seg3) nl04 = .5 17 USN (seg3) nl04 = .4 ! Here we go (or don't go) again ... and so on, down the list through #26 (see SL_PLAN) If we get this far (unlikely) change to 5.4T, 0.8MA and 27 LSN (seg2) nl04=1.2 28 USN (seg3) nl04=1.2 and raise density from here per SL_PLAN |

| Run Summary for 1050602 MP#409 "SOL Phase space studies" - Day 3 ___________________________________________________________________________________ This was a very productive run, despite some initial concerns of attaining low density plasmas with the titanium dust in the machine. We managed to finish a careful scan of plasma density over the range of NL04= 0.15 to 0.6e20 in matched upper and lower null topologies (Ip = 0.4 MA, Bt = 4.0 tesla). The run plan also called for doing a density scan at Bt=2.7 tesla. We did manage to start the scan, setting up a lower null (shot# 32) and upper null discharge (shot# 33) at NL04=0.5e19 - thanks once again to Steve Wolfe's excellent job at the controls. I think the really good news is that, based on our experience today, we should be able to bang out the rest of the discharges in this density scan sometime during this campaign (despite Ti dust) with the help of these starting shots. The repaired ASP mach probe head worked well today. It appears to be reporting similar flow data as the previous one we toasted during MP#410 (1050428). Turbulence imaging data was also collected on a number of shots (after 1.2s), although the low densities resulted in low signal levels on the cameras. Boron Doppler spectroscopy on the inner wall was attempted today, but the low density plus low intrinsic boron levels in the machine (covered with Ti films?) made the signal levels too low to be useful. The interesting bit of information that we hope to extract from the probe data taken today is how the SOL profiles evolve as n/nG is raised at low absolute densities. Does a similar 'shoulder' appear in the far SOL at these densities compared to discharges with twice the current? This will require loading the edge database and processing the profiles. Stay tuned. Physop Summary for 1050602
Contrary to my expectation there was no problem running the low densities
called for in the run plan. The machine ran pretty reliably today, although I
lost a few shots to fizzles through inadequate chasing of the pre-puff as we
ran the density up and down.
THE STARTUPS IN SEG1 AFTER SHOT#2 SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR NORMAL CURRENT
RUNS. THE ENGINEERING SETUP WAS ALSO CHANGED AS OF SHOT 15 (EARLY CROWBAR) AND
ALSO SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR NORMAL CURRENT RUNS.
Note also that segment 2 has lower null and segment 3 has upper
null.
The first 5 shots disrupted before 1sec, apparently because of an early onset
locked mode. This was pointed out by Amanda. The Acoil was on too strong for
the field and current, and was overcompensating the error field. On shot#6 I
decreased the acoil current from 2000A to 1000A (program), and we had no more
early disruptions. These shots may be of interest for the locked mode database
as threshold points in first quadrant. When we went down to 2.7 tesla, I made
an additional adjustment to the acoil, but this may not have been
necessary. There were some mid-rampdown disruptions which may have had locked
modes.
I spent a fair amount of time minimizing the current overshoot for these 400kA
plasmas. Ip control was turned on in segment 1, and the feedforward oh1
voltage was reduced in both segment 1 and segs 2 and 3. The oh crowbars were
moved from .12 sec to .08 sec. The gain was raised to 4 in segment 1 and early
in 2 and 3. I succeeded in getting the overshoot down to about 40ka, with the
extra rise coming in the second segment; the current at segment switch was
below 400kA. On shot#16, I reduced V_OH1 to 50V for the whole second segment
and for some reason the time of diverting was delayed to 0.5sec, with a big
clearin error. After that I put the second segment V_OH1 back to 100V to
.15sec and then 150V; dropping the early value would probably have gotten rid
of the overshoot completely, but I didn't want to risk losing more data for
the run, so I left it alone after that.
Flat density down to 3e19 were obtained without a lot of runaways, and the
shots aimed at 2e19 ended up down to 1.4e19 or so, but had a LOT of
runaways. There was absolutely no problem with internal D2 fueling. In fact
even the 2e19 cases had finite gas puff under feedback.
We got through Brian's program, somewhat out of order, through point#16 (Upper
null at 0.5e19, 400kA, 2.7tesla). The entire scan at 4T was completed except
for the upper null point at 0.7e19.
Scorecard:
Date 1050602: 33 shots. 28 plasmas. 4 fizzles. 1 duds. 0 System Error.
(Plasma = Ip gt 50.0 kA Dud = H_alpha lt 0.40 V)
Total plasma duration: 49.42 s (exceeding -56 kA)

| Jun 2 2005 09:37:43:450AM | 1050602001 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#1: Supposed to be 4T lower null at 5e19 Short plasma. Disrupts at .76sec. Density starts very low gets UP to 5e19 before end of shot. Looks like a big injection at .69sec. No hards breakdown is a little late 6.3sec on Halpha, later on Zmeter? Bz looks a little negative, Br0 near zero next shot: no changes, try again |
| Jun 2 2005 09:28:07:933AM | 1050602002 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#2: Disrupts at .95sec, similar behavior. breakdown around 7msec. next shot: ef4 10Amps postive,start Ip control in seg1 |
| Jun 2 2005 09:45:50:950AM | 1050602003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#3: ef4 from -1320 to -1310 Turn on Ip control in seg1 (gain 1 from 70ms) and lower initial point in seg2 Still disrupting early. Brian says it was detaching on the previous shot. This one makes it to .76 again Current still overshoots, either I don't have enough gain or I missed something. breakdown earlier, around 5ms next shot: raise Ip gain to 2 at .085sec Drop nl04 to 4e19 |
| Jun 2 2005 10:03:34:000AM | 1050602004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#4:raise Ip gain to 2 at .085sec Drop nl04 to 4e19, lower zxl from 0 to -.01 Still short, around .79sec, still overshooting on current It got 4e19, then rises starting at .72sec Could move rxl in a bit if there is a problem on the divertor Possible locked mode around 0.5sec, shortly after Acoil comes on OH1 is still before crossover, I may be causing it. next shot: Disable Bside lower Decrease acoil current to 1000A, rxl from 0 to -.01 |
| Jun 2 2005 10:13:13:810AM | 1050602005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#5:raise Ip gain to 4 at .085sec Disable Bside lower Decrease acoil current to 1000A, rxl from 0 to -.01 Dud. Long delay in INIT and then in CHECK, but it didn't timeout. Fields look fine. next shot: raise PG4 |
| Jun 2 2005 10:31:21:140AM | 1050602006 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#6:PG4 from 29 to 33msec Ip gain at 4 at .085sec Disable Bside lower acoil current to 1000A, rxl from 0 to -.01 Plasma full length, finally! Nl04 holding at 0.4e20 Current still overshooting, like it isn't paying attention to the feedback in seg1? No sign of a locked mode, model b21<1G Breakdown still a little late 6.8msec Next shot: repeat with NINJA on |
| Jun 2 2005 10:52:03:170AM | 1050602007 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#7:Extend Acoil into rampdown,Br0 from .00025 to 0.0000 Otherwise, repeat with NINJA on Some delay before this shot because Granetz managed to raise machine pressure to 100mTorr range by purging the gas jet. Plasma full length, looked like some runaways this time. Bouncy startup. Breakdown still at 6.6ms Only a small rise in nl04 after 1sec. Next shot: Raise pg4 some more |
| Jun 2 2005 11:08:05:890AM | 1050602008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#8:: Raise pg4 from 33 to 36msec Move rxl, zxl back to zero from -.01 plasma full length, got rid of the runaways bd a little earlier next shot: Decrease v_oh1 between .05 and .1sec |
| Jun 2 2005 11:26:18:200AM | 1050602009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9:: Decrease v_oh1 to 100V between .071sec and .1sec SL wants 2mm smaller gap on inside CLEARIN from .004 to .002 RCUR smaller by .001 Plasma full length. Poke, poke, poke. Ip is still overshooting, doesn't seem to be paying attention to anything in seg1? bd even a little earlier, no bounce, no runaways. next shot: upper null |
| Jun 2 2005 11:37:02:733AM | 1050602010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10:go to upper null Copy Acoil program from seg2 to seg3 Copy nl04, Ip from seg2 to seg3 seg2 off, seg3 on Plasma full length. It looked upper. next shot: drop voh1 in first 200ms of seg3 I may need to move crowbar earlier, but hold off for now |
| Jun 2 2005 11:54:48:280AM | 1050602011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11: drop voh1 in first 50ms of seg3 from 250 to 100V I may need to move crowbar earlier, but hold off for now SL wants inner gap smaller by 2mm clearin from .004 to .002 rcur smaller by 1mm Plasma full length. Smaller overshoot on Ip this time, just touches 500kA. next shot: raise early Ip gain in seg3 from 1.8 to 4.0 |
| Jun 2 2005 12:04:56:653PM | 1050602012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: raise early Ip gain in seg3 from 1.8 to 4.0 (if that works I have to remember to copy this all to seg2) Drop the voh1 point at .052sec from 250V to 150V in seg1 SL wants another 2mm smaller inner gap CLEARIN from .002 to 0., rcur smaller by .001 fizzle. slower current rise, previous one also showed signs next: drop pg4 |
| Jun 2 2005 12:19:17:890PM | 1050602013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13:pg4 from 36ms to 33ms early Ip gain in seg3 at 4.0 (if that works I have to remember to copy this all to seg2) voh1 point at .052sec at 150V in seg1 CLEARIN at 0., rcur smaller than shot 11 by .001 plasma full length, overshoot down to 470kA. next: drop voh1 in seg1 some more |
| Jun 2 2005 12:37:33:950PM | 1050602014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: voh1 point at .052sec from 150 to 100V,later points to 50V in seg1 Drop nl04 from 4e19 to 3e19 This will be point#8 in the SL plan (with 7 to follow) plasma full length Slight density overshoot (to 4, then back down to 3e19) Ip still overshooting to 470. Camac gas puff data missing, but we were puffing to maintain 3e19. next shot: drop pg3 puff in seg1, OH crowbars to .08sec |
| Jun 2 2005 01:04:55:467PM | 1050602015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: drop pg3 puff in seg1 to 20V, OH crowbars to .08sec from .120sec Copy seg3 Voh1 to seg2, also change ip gain to 4 in seg2 Copy seg3 nl04 to seg2 Turn seg3 off, seg2 on Going to lower null again, this is point#7 on SL_PLAN There was a 25minute delay while SZ&JT fixed cameras in cell Plasma full length, Ip still overshooting to 450kA,in seg 2. nl04 3e19, with a drop to 2e19 between .29 and .5sec, no overshoot Next shot:Voh1 in seg 2 down to 50V, and lower nl04 to 0.2 |
| Jun 2 2005 01:21:19:763PM | 1050602016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: Voh1 in seg 2 down to 50V, all the way across nl04 down to 0.2e19 in seg2 This is point#10 in SL_PLAN Breakdown on 15 was late(7.2ms), probably should have tweaked startup plasma full length. Current still overshooting, 430kA density overshoots to 3.5 and then drops to 2e19 bd back earlier again But this one seems to be limited through 0.5sec? next: turn off pg3 in seg1 |
| Jun 2 2005 01:35:50:857PM | 1050602017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17: turn off pg3 in seg1 Put voh1 back the way it was on 15. plasma full length, but runaways building during the shot. nl04=1.4e19 and flat once it diverts (which it does at .24 this time) I could program 10V pg3 puff, I don't have any headroom on nl04 gain (the error is all of 6e18!) next move to upper null |
| Jun 2 2005 01:44:55:013PM | 1050602018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: copy nl04 from seg2 to seg3, turn off seg2, on seg3 This is point#9 in SL_PLAN plasma but full runaway shot from .45sec on. Nl04 not as flat, but below 2e19 Next: try to get a shot at 2e19 that has more than one electron |
| Jun 2 2005 01:56:03:140PM | 1050602019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: try to get a shot at 2e19 that doesn't runaway pg3 to 20V in seg1, to 10V from .3sec through 1sec in seg3 increase pg4 33ms to 35ms Still has runaways, not as bad as 18 (but close) nl04 still lower than 2e19 startup bounced, I guess I didn't raise pg4 enough. Next: try for 2.5e19 programmed |
| Jun 2 2005 02:12:33:187PM | 1050602020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: Change of plans: try for 5e19 programmed (point#3 in SL_PLAN), Also raise pg4 from 35 to 38ms to try to stop bounce Plasma, still some runaways. Startup still bounces. density pretty close, not perfect. next: repeat for probes |
| Jun 2 2005 02:21:49:250PM | 1050602021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: Copy nl04 and pg3 from seg3 to seg2 but don't turn on. Leave pg4 alone after higher density shot Leave seg3 pg3 alone, see if wall loads up a little plasma full length, no runaways, no bounce nl04 up a bit, pretty close. next shot: drop pg4 3msec, probably go to lower null |
| Jun 2 2005 02:34:15:297PM | 1050602022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: drop pg4 38 to 35msec, go to lower null: Seg3 off, seg2 on I suppose this is point#2 of plan fizzle. Either dropped pg4 too much or too little Looks like too little. next: pg4 down to 30msec |
| Jun 2 2005 02:51:34:293PM | 1050602023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: drop pg4 35msec to 30msec, going for lower null: Seg3 off, seg2 on plasma full length bouncy startup, small early runaway population nl04=5e19 (until NINJA) next: 6e19 |
| Jun 2 2005 03:00:29:327PM | 1050602024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24:nl04 to 6e19. No change in pg4; see if gas comes up on its own. plasma full length, still bouncy, need to raise the gas a bit density looks good. |
| Jun 2 2005 03:20:02:857PM | 1050602025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25:Pg4 to 32msec get rid of ramping rcur after 1.1sec for JT (seg2) Also in seg3 (upper null). Program nl04 to rise to 1.0e20 after 1.3sec for SZ seg2 off , seg3 on (Upper null point 12) plasma disrupted in ramdown nl04 .6e20 early, then 1.2e20 no runaways, hint of hesitation in startup SZ says now it's too bright, he wants less gas late next: drop second plateau to 0.7e19 |
| Jun 2 2005 03:26:43:200PM | 1050602026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26:drop second plateau to 0.7e19, otherwise repeat fizzle, should have dropped the gas next pg4 from 32 to 29ms |
| Jun 2 2005 03:41:26:013PM | 1050602027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#27:pg4 from 32 to 29m second density plateau to 7e19 Still trying to get upper null, 6e19 for Brian plasma to 1.7sec, still disrupting in rampdown and this one had early runaways (bouncer, too big a drop on pg4). nl04 doing what we asked, but still seems to get a big marfe late. next shot: second plateau off, probably going to .7e20 |
| Jun 2 2005 03:54:07:857PM | 1050602028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#28:Lower null and 0.7e20 seg2 program 7e19. Seg3 off, seg2 on pg4 from 29 to 30msec plasma to 1.8sec, nl04=0.7e20 I seem to have the pg3 in seg1 coming on too early. next shot: fix pg3 in seg1, see what SL wants |
| Jun 2 2005 04:05:36:100PM | 1050602029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#29: delay pg3 in seg1 to 30msec Otherwise, repeat for a deeper probe plunge fizzle, slightly later bd, moves in next: pg4 to 28msec, ef4 10A negative |
| Jun 2 2005 04:26:23:813PM | 1050602030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#30:pg4 from 30 to 28msec, ic_ef4 from -1310 to -1320 plasma to 1.8sec Bouncy startup, there is no range in pressure next shot: nl05=5e19, B=2.7T |
| Jun 2 2005 04:31:29:313PM | 1050602031 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#31: nl05=5e19, B=2.7T acoil current down to 800A prog. from 1000A ITF to -75kA No change to startup, let it bounce plasma to 1.8 sec, got 2.9T instead of 2.7, otherwise ok. next shot: drop I_tf to -70ka |
| Jun 2 2005 04:42:31:310PM | 1050602032 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#32: drop I_tf to -70ka and start the drop at .05 in seg1 ramp acoil from 800 to 1000 plasma to 1.8sec next shot: upper null like this one |
| Jun 2 2005 04:56:59:140PM | 1050602033 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#33: upper null like 32: Copy seg2 to seg3:tf, acoil ; nl04 seg2 off, seg3 on change acoil program to ramp to 1200, increase pg4 from 28 to 30msec This is point#16 in the plan. plasma to 1.8, Brian has good data. That's it for today. |
