| Plan:
Investigate antenna voltage and power characteristics in He discharges. First set of discharges will be LSN fiducials in He to obtain power and voltage characteristics. We will perform a similar set of discharges for USN and then investigate the pressure limit in He for the antennas by raising the density. |

| Run summary
We had significant improvement in the D antenna operation through conditioning in He. With the switch back to D plasmas, the antenna performance did decrease but appeared to be recovering (027). We reached 0.75 MW for the first time with D antenna since the vent to remove the LH coupler. E antenna also ran well up to 45 kV in He plasmas and showed decreased reliability with the switch back to D plasmas. We were unable to reach high enough neutral pressures in He discharges to determine if the neutral pressure limit was different from D plasmas. This scan showed J antenna could couple into high density plasmas without reliability issues with low neutral pressure. |

| Run summary for Thursday 09 June 2005: MP #326: RF Antenna comparison (in helium plasmas, although not called for in the MP) Session leader: Y. Lin/S. Wukitch Physics operator: R. Granetz The machine ran well today. Most of the run consisted of 1 MA, 5.4 T, lower single null discharges in helium plasmas. D, E, and J ran on every shot. See the session leader's summary for the RF performance. H/(H+D) was 10-12% in the helium plasmas. After shot 23 we changed to deuterium plasmas for the remainder of the run. H/(H+D) was 7-11% for those discharges. This was deemed good enough to proceed with boronization after the run. On shot 27 a lithium pellet was fired in at t=1.45 s (seen on DANT video frame 43). The last three shots of the day were apparently done in by a faulty capillary valve on the NINJA system, which played havoc with the torus pressure. Needless to say, the NINJA system must remain pumped out until the bad valve is isolated. Scorecard: 24 plasmas 3 fizzles 3 duds 0 tests or no-power shot cycles ---------- 30 total shot cycles |

| Jun 9 2005 11:24:26:663AM | 1050609008 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Helium. J=1 MW, E=1.4 MW (only a couple of faults), D=0.75 MW. H/D doesn't look right. Next shot: repeat, no PCS changes. |
| Jun 9 2005 11:36:57:960AM | 1050609009 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Helium. J=1.0 Mw, E=1.4 MW, D=0.75 MW. H/D failed. Joe Bosco is pulling out the module and comparing its settings to a replacement module. Next shot: no PCS changes. |
| Jun 9 2005 11:48:40:710AM | 1050609010 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.58 s. Helium. RF same as preceding shots. No video data. The A14 for the H/D is being swapped back to the original digitizer. Next shot: raise nl_04 from 1.0 to 1.2e20 m-2. |
| Jun 9 2005 12:02:34:233PM | 1050609011 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Density excursion occurred around t=0.4, but it was back to the desired value by 0.5 s. There's a hot spot showing up on the outboard limiter near H-port. H/(H+D)=10%. Next shot: increase nl_04 to 1.4e20 m-2. |
| Jun 9 2005 12:11:37:210PM | 1050609012 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.5-3 MW. Density excursion is getting more pronounced. Next shot: raise nl_04 to 1.6e20 m-2. |
| Jun 9 2005 12:20:31:757PM | 1050609013 | Robert Granetz | Fizzle. Very weak, very late. Cell access for various people. Next shot: increase pre-fill by another 2 ms. |
| Jun 9 2005 12:46:39:960PM | 1050609014 | Robert Granetz | Dud. Next shot: increase pre-fill another 2 ms (to 36 ms). |
| Jun 9 2005 01:06:51:930PM | 1050609015 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Got the higher density during the RF. E-port has improved quite a bit and essentially looks ready for prime time. H/(H+D)=10%. Next shot: raise nl_04 to 1.8e20 m-2. Increase pre-fill another 1 ms. |
| Jun 9 2005 01:18:04:697PM | 1050609016 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Disrupted early (t=0.38 s). Looked very resistive. JANT video view shows numerous dust particulates (frame 11). Next shot: repeat, no PCS changes. |
| Jun 9 2005 01:39:43:053PM | 1050609017 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Another resistive shot with an early disruption. More particulates on the JANT view. Next shot: try once more. If that still disrupts early, then reduce the density. On second thought, Steve wants to go down to nl_04=1.1e20 m-2 for the next shot. |
| Jun 9 2005 01:53:07:650PM | 1050609018 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot, full length at the lower density. Prf=2-3 MW. H/(H+D) dropped to 7-8%. Next shot: reduce nl_04 to 0.9e20 m-2. |
| Jun 9 2005 02:08:25:383PM | 1050609019 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.69 s. Not sure why. Next shot: try again, no changes. |
| Jun 9 2005 02:22:25:680PM | 1050609020 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. E-port didn't do well on this shot. D-port did worse than it has been. H/(H+D)=9%. Next shot: at Bruce's request, keep the torus GV closed during the shot and for 5 minutes after the shot. |
| Jun 9 2005 02:35:50:350PM | 1050609021 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2-3 MW. H/(H+D)=8-11%. The torus gate valves are remaining closed during and after the shot for 5 minutes. Next shot: repeat. |
| Jun 9 2005 02:53:40:163PM | 1050609022 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Late breakdown. Next shot: no changes. |
| Jun 9 2005 03:08:00:540PM | 1050609023 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Helium (last one for today). H/(H+D)=10-12%. Zeff=2.7-2.8. Next shot: switch to deuterium plasmas and observe H/D, as well as the antenna performance. Also, I zeroed the very early gas preprogramming in segment 1 (per Steve Wolfe's suggestion). |
| Jun 9 2005 03:22:29:600PM | 1050609024 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. First deuterium plasma (helium previously). H/(H+D)=9-10%. RF performance seems identical to earlier helium shots. Next shot: repeat, no changes. |
| Jun 9 2005 03:40:07:697PM | 1050609025 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Deuterium plasma. H/(H+D)= 8% -> 9% -> 11%. Next shot: same, except Brock will be firing the LPI at t=1.45 s. |
| Jun 9 2005 03:50:40:447PM | 1050609026 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Deuterium plasma. RF is similar. No H/D. LPI didn't actually fire. Next shot: LPI will try again. NINJA will also puff some D2. |
| Jun 9 2005 04:04:15:180PM | 1050609027 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Deuterium plasma. H/(H+D)=7-10%. LPI fired at 1.45 s...got a snake. NINJA didn't seem to fire. Next shot: repeat. No more LPI today. NINJA will try again. |
| Jun 9 2005 04:40:26:383PM | 1050609027 | Robert Granetz | The lithium pellet ablation trail can be seen in the DANT view, frame 43. |
| Jun 9 2005 04:12:32:710PM | 1050609028 | Robert Granetz | Fizzle. Torus pressure was higher in CHECK state than it has been today. Pre-fill pressure was high on this shot. And the torus pressure alarmed after the shot (gate valves are still being kept closed for 5 minutes after the shot). Next shot: reduce pre-fill by 3 ms. |
| Jun 9 2005 04:38:39:587PM | 1050609028 | Robert Granetz | Apparently the NINJA system fired at t=8 s after shot 27 and again at t=8 s after shot 28, and again 20 minutes after shot 28. There is a delay while the machine is being pumped out. The NINJA system has been turned off. |
| Jun 9 2005 04:57:17:367PM | 1050609029 | Robert Granetz | Fizzle. Pretty strong light signals, but the pressure was somewhat high. There seems to be another source of D2 gas from somewhere prior to the shot. Next shot: reduce pre-fill pulse another 5 ms. This will be the last shot. |
| Jun 9 2005 05:10:18:150PM | 1050609030 | Robert Granetz | Dud. Torus pressure went up to the -5 scale (or maybe the -4 scale) during CHECK state. End of run. |
