MP 417. Post-boronization evaluation

Setup: Li pellet and boron injectors may be needed.
Run load shot 1050426022 (possibly at a slightly different density)
Posssibly an extended run to 9 pm.

Background:
Boronization done preferentially to the outer limiter and
antennas. ECDC in D2 prior to the first plasma (scan from 50 cm to
103 cm with dwell at 78.5 cm) We already know that this boronization
would be effective based on some post Titanium runs. We still need
to know whether it is as effective as the previous two
boronizations, 1050419 (outer divertor only) and 1050425 (outer
divertor together with outer limiter and antennas)

Goal
1. Evaluate boronization by running constant discharges.
2. Evaluate the trend of impurities levels in the plasma

Plan:
1. Load shot 1050426022.
Slightly modified RF waveform. 3 MW from 0.7 to 1.1 sec, 4 MW (if
possible, otherwise, 3.6 MW) from 1.1 sec to 1.5 sec

Do a density scan in the first 3 shots, target density at
nl = 1.1, 0.9, 1.3e20 m^-2. For the subsequent shots, choose
the density that give the best long EDA H-mode

Assess the boronization effectiveness using the first 15 plasmas.

2. Decision point (after 15 full-length plasmas).

A. If the performance is excellent (Wtot >= 170 kJ at 3 MW RF), we
will continue running the same 1 MA plasmas until we see
definite degradation of performance. (criterion: Wtot <~ 150 kJ
at 1 MA and 3 MW Prf.) the run will stop as soon as there are
three consecutive plasmas meeting the degradated performance
criterion.

In this case, we possibly run until 9 pm. No boronization will be
followed.

B. If the boronization has worn out substantially after 15 plasmas
(150 kJ < Wtot < 165 kJ at 3 MW, 1 MA), we will continue 1 MA
shot until we see three plasmas with Wtot <~ 150 kJ at 3 MW and 1
MA. If time allows (earlier than 5 pm), we will try boron shaker
to inject boron to the outer limiter. We will also try Li-pellet
injection. And see whether there is an improvement on the
performance.

In this case, the run will probably stop at 5 pm. No boronization
will be followed.

C. (This scenario is unlikely based on the experience we have now)
If the boronization is shown to be a "bust" (3 consecutive
plasmas at Wtot < 150 kJ at 1 MA, 3 MW Prf), we will try the
boron shaker and Li-pellet injections. We may also do N2 puff
into RF heated L-mode and identify the dominant Mo sources.

In this case, the run will definitely stop at 5 pm.

Session Leader Summaries

A successful run. Total 48 shots, in which about 30 shots have at
least 3 MW RF.

Performance peaked at about shot 20, Wtot 210 kJ at 4 MW and 170 kJ at
3 MW. The flat top of performance last for about 8 plasmas for 4 MW
and about 15 plasmas for 3 MW, then definite deterioration was
observed. After shot 40, the performance went to be marginally 'good',
Wtot ~ 150 kJ at 3 MW. Also starting from this point, 4 MW and 3 MW gave about
the same Wtot. After shot 47, the
performance is below 'good performance', with Wtot < 150 kJ. The last shot,
shot 48, only got 136 kJ at 3 MW.

H/D level was 4-6% all day.

Mo level was significantly lower than pre-boronization. Ti is also
insignificant, although visible. Prad crept up shot by shot slowly,
and finally deteriorate the performance.

The total neutrons today is 5.7e14. 2nd highest in C-Mod history.

The machine ran well but there were a number of difficulties maintaining the breakdown after the boronization. I was physop up through shot 30 and there were 20 plasmas, 3 fizzles, and 7 duds. The plasmas that went were all full length with RF and good performance except for shot 15 which disrupted just after the start of the RF due to overheating of the divertor, apparently the Tungsten brush tiles. The boronization kept up until at least shot 30 with a number of plasmas exceeding 200 kJ and a neutron alert by mid afternoon. So, the run continued until 9:00 pm. Granetz took over as physop after 5:00 pm.

Physop summary for latter part of Friday 10 June 2005:

MP #417: How long does boronization last?

Session leader: Y. Lin/S. Wukitch
Physics operator: R. Granetz

I took over as physop from Joe Snipes after shot 30. We continued running
1 MA, 5.4 T, SNL fiducial plasmas for the RF, with the goal of finding out
if/when the good confinement afforded by last night's boronization would
wear off. It clearly did wear off as the run progressed, starting first at
the 5 MW level, then the 4 MW level, and finally even the 3 MW level. See
Yijun's session leader summary for details.

After I took over, the machine ran well until we had a disruption (confirmed
moly injection) on shot 35. Then there were four duds over the next 6
shots. After tweaking Bz0, the remainder of the run went well.

Oh yes, there is one other important conclusion from today's run. Although
we had an air leak earlier this week (6 torr on a humid Monday morning)
a single day's bake brought the machine right back to its pre-leak condition.

Scorecard: 34 plasmas
3 fizzles
11 duds (2 due to power supply problems)
0 tests or no-power shot cycles
----------
48 total shot cycles

Physics Operator Comments
Jun 10 2005 09:47:46:117AM1050610001Joseph SnipesShot 1: Copied shot 1050426022 and then removed the pre-programmed deuterium gas puff in segment 2. Copied segment 1 from shot 1050609027 to get yesterday's startup. Since boronization may increase the gas from the walls, I reduced the prepuff from 36 ms to 30 ms duration. Delay before shot 1 to repair the ratiomatic pressure gauge.
Jun 10 2005 09:48:07:913AM1050610001Joseph SnipesShot 1: Copied shot 1050426022 and then removed the pre-programmed deuterium gas puff in segment 2. Copied segment 1 from shot 1050608021 for the startup. Fizzle!
Jun 10 2005 09:49:30:960AM1050610002Joseph SnipesShot 2: Ratiomatic filament was changed, so there could be a calibration error. Assume the calibration is OK and that the boronization loaded the walls. So, I've dropped the prepuff by a factor of two to 14 ms duration. Dud!
Jun 10 2005 10:06:14:710AM1050610003Joseph SnipesShot 3: Add 6 ms more prepuff to 20 ms duration. Good shot. Late breakdown at 8 ms, but otherwise the startup looks decent.
Jun 10 2005 11:19:15:490AM1050610004Joseph SnipesShot 4: Add 6 ms more prepuff to 20 ms duration. Fizzle!
Jun 10 2005 10:43:06:037AM1050610005Joseph SnipesShot 5: Reduced prepuff by 2 ms to 18 ms duration and reduced Br0 by 0.25 mT

Jun 10 2005 04:28:02:730PM1050610027Joseph SnipesShot 27: Reduced prepuff by 2 ms to 19 ms duration. Power supply fault. Very low TF at 0.3 T. Apparently, my load into model was a second too late.
Jun 10 2005 04:32:12:747PM1050610028Joseph SnipesShot 28: Try again. Dud. EF3 breaker pulled out.
Jun 10 2005 04:47:14:060PM1050610029Joseph SnipesShot 29: In case there is still something wrong with the hybrid setup, I've reloaded shot 1050610026. We will try another shot. Good shot.
Jun 10 2005 05:03:36:030PM1050610030Joseph SnipesShot 30: Gate valve to be closed after this shot. Good shot.
Jun 10 2005 05:09:16:920PM1050610031Robert GranetzGranetz taking over as physics operator prior to this shot.
Jun 10 2005 05:19:53:670PM1050610031Robert GranetzPlasma. Good shot. Breakdown pressure came down, but it's still higher than
usual. Torus gate valve remained open for this shot, and will remain open for
the rest of tonight's shots. Prf=1-1.5 MW only. No power from J-port.
Wth=110 kJ. Video cameras are not working. H/(H+D)=4%.

Next shot: repeat, no changes. The goal is to see if/when the effects of
boronization wear off.
Jun 10 2005 05:51:33:730PM1050610032Robert GranetzPlasma. Good shot. Prf=4+ MW. Wth=185-200 kJ. H/(H+D)=4.5%.

Next shot: reduce pre-fill gas pulse to 20 ms.
Jun 10 2005 05:50:53:823PM1050610033Robert GranetzPlasma. Good shot. Prf=3-4 MW. Wth=150 kJ. H/(H+D)=4-5%

Next shot: repeat, no changes
Jun 10 2005 06:01:10:090PM1050610034Robert GranetzPlasma. Good shot. Prf=4+ MW. Wth=150-175 kJ. H/(H+D)=4-5%

Next shot: repeat, no changes
Jun 10 2005 06:35:08:403PM1050610035Robert GranetzPlasma. Disrupted early (t=0.35) due to molybdenum injection. This is only
the second disruption of the day so far.

Next shot: try again, no changes.
Jun 10 2005 06:34:42:933PM1050610036Robert GranetzDud. Inexplicable. All the traces overlay. Null looks good.
Maybe it has something to do with the preceding disruption.

Next shot: no changes, just try again.
Jun 10 2005 06:37:32:217PM1050610037Robert GranetzPlasma. Good shot. Prf=3-4 MW. Wth=150 kJ. H/(H+D)=5%.
Late breakdown.

Next shot: no changes.
Jun 10 2005 06:43:36:683PM1050610038Robert GranetzDud. Null is fine.

Next shot: increase pre-fill by 2 ms.
Jun 10 2005 07:01:34:090PM1050610039Robert GranetzPlasma. Good shot. J-port was intentionally turned off for 0.5 s to
investigate bolometry and molybdenum measurements. At 3 MW, Wth=150 kJ.
H/(H+D)=4%.

Next shot: no changes.
Jun 10 2005 07:16:11:857PM1050610040Robert GranetzPlasma. Good shot. Prf = 3 -> 4 -> 4+ MW. Wth=150 kJ. H/(H+D)=5%.
Seems like the extra RF power above 3 MW is not increasing the stored
energy at all.

Next shot: no changes.
Jun 10 2005 07:24:03:310PM1050610041Robert GranetzDud.

Next shot: add another 2 ms to pre-fill.
Jun 10 2005 07:39:29:590PM1050610042Robert GranetzDud.

Next shot: add -15 amps from IC_EF4 (-1290 -> -1305)
Jun 10 2005 07:53:22:963PM1050610043Robert GranetzPlasma. Good shot. Prf = 3 -> 4 -> 4+ MW. Wth=150 kJ at best. H/(H+D)=4.5-5%.
Performance is degrading, even at 3 MW.

Next shot: repeat, no changes.
Jun 10 2005 08:10:54:433PM1050610044Robert GranetzPlasma. Good shot. Prf = 3 -> 4 -> 4+ MW. Wth=150 kJ at best. H/(H+D)=4.5-5%.
Performance is degrading, even at 3 MW.

Next shot: repeat, no changes.
Jun 10 2005 08:23:41:747PM1050610045Robert GranetzPlasma. Good shot. But no power from J-port.

Next shot: repeat, no changes.
Jun 10 2005 08:33:52:527PM1050610046Robert GranetzPlasma. Good shot. No power from J-port, again.

Next shot: lower nl_04 to 0.9e20 m-2 (from 1.05e20 m-2) to try and get J-port
going again.
Jun 10 2005 08:49:48:840PM1050610047Robert GranetzPlasma. Good shot. Prf = 3 -> 4 -> 4+ MW. Wth=130-150 kJ. H/(H+D)=4.5-5%.
Turnover in performance is obvious, even at 3 MW.

Next shot: repeat, no changes.
Jun 10 2005 09:03:52:370PM1050610048Robert GranetzPlasma. Good shot. Prf = 3 -> 4 MW. Wth=130 kJ. H/(H+D)=4.5%.

End of run.
