| MP 404a Parametric Dependence of Moderate n Alfvén Eigenmode Damping Rates
Session Leader: Joseph Snipes Physics Operator: Bob Granetz We will begin with inner wall limited plasmas (0.8 MA, ramping TF from 6 to 4 T) with shape from 1021003007 with kappa = 1.4. Density set to 1 x 10^19 m^-2. We will first check to see if a resonance can be obtained with ramping field and constant frequency. Then, we will go to constant field and scan the active MHD frequency across the TAE frequency at q=1.5 and look for resonances. Then, we will scan the elongation from 1.1 to 1.8 and then scan the triangularity from 0 to 0.8. Time permitting, we will then choose a middle value of the shape parameters and scan the density from 0.5 to 4 x 10^20 m^-3 to vary the collisionality. If we manage to get all of this done, we will then scan the TF from 2 T to 8 T. No ICRF is required for this run. Rotation measurements are desirable even though the rotation will be small. |

| I loaded segment 2 from 1021003007, then made all the required configuration
changes (rog_cd -> rog_fg, pulse_gas5 -> acoil, put proper waveform for a-coil, remove offset from clearin and ip, etcetera). Then I adjusted Ip to 0.8 MA (from 0.75) and nl_04 to 1.0e20 m-2 (from 0.9). I saved this as shot 1050615000 in /home/granetz/pcs_scratch. I also loaded into the model file. |

| My run plan mistakenly called for helium plasmas. This error was caught just as we went into init for shot 2. We switched to deuterium plasmas after shot 2. |

Power systems as on 1021003007 (0.73 MA, 6 T, inner wall limited) A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled. Gas Setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper with whatever Hybrid disabled fill B-main (C-side) with 30 psi He Hybrid enabled (PG3) <-- Mistake. Should have been D2. NINJA not used today Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters Important Diagnostics: HIREX, PCI, fast magnetics ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ICRF Setup: No ICRF needed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run plan: Vary everything over a huge range and use the active MHD antennas and new amplifiers to drive TAE's, and measure their damping rate. Read the session leader's run plan for more details. |

| The run was a struggle from the beginning. The physop called for helium plasmas when the session leader wanted deuterium. Fortunately, Ted Biewer noted it after shot 2 and we changed to deuterium. The automatic capacitor switching amplifiers worked reasonably well with frequency sweeping over +/- 150 kHz range and the DPCS real-time calculation of the TAE frequency worked well together with the sweep to track the TAE frequency throughout the shots including all the changes we made. The lower antenna amplifier has higher harmonics rather than the cleaner sine waves of the upper antenna amplifier. More tests need to be done to track this down and correct it. The elongation was scanned from about 1.65 to 1.15 with inner wall limited plasmas. The last two shots were then taken with SNL for comparison. We also ramped the TF from 6 T down to 4 T and took some shots at constant TF at 5.4 T and at 4.6 T. There were a number of weak resonances found, but further analysis is required to see if we have any clear trends in the damping versus elongation or edge shear. There were 18 useful plasmas for which active MHD data are available. If the resonances are clear enough, we may have a complete elongation scan for inner wall limited plasmas. |

| Physop summary for Wednesday 15 June 2005: MP #404a: Alfven mode studies w/active MHD Session leader: J. Snipes Physics operator: R. Granetz Today's run used the new active MHD amplifiers, and involved many inboard limited plasmas (some also nearly outboard limited), with very low and high elongations, and Bt sweeps. There were also some diverted plasmas. The machine ran fairly well, although there were 4 duds and most startups didn't look very good. There were also a couple of delays due to computer problems. A number of shots disrupted early due to impurity injections (for example, see JANT video view, frame 7, shot 1050615021), but there were also four plasma shots that were essentially wasted by my own physop errors: shots 1 and 2 were nice plasmas, but they were helium instead of deuterium because I had inadvertently copied a recent setup from a helium run and didn't catch that. On shot 14 I moved RCUR by 5 cm instead of 5 mm, and on shot 28 I loaded most of the PCS programming changes, but then made some additional changes and forgot to reload them into the model. Scorecard: 22 plasmas 1 fizzles 4 duds (2 due to power supply problems) 2 tests or no-power shot cycles ---------- 29 total shot cycles |

| Jun 15 2005 09:31:50:820AM | 1050615001 | Joseph Snipes | Granetz went ahead without me on shot 1, when I was seconds away from having the BiRa setup. So, we got a linear frequency ramp from 200 to 800 kHz throughout the shot with a ramp from 6 to 4 T. |
| Jun 15 2005 09:44:55:130AM | 1050615002 | Joseph Snipes | For shot 2, we were setup with constant frequency at a nominal 420 kHz to attempt to reproduce 2002 resonances with ramping TF and constant active MHD frequency. However, Ted Biewer noticed that we were running helium plasmas because Bob had copied the wrong gas setup from a helium run. |
| Jun 15 2005 10:02:03:940AM | 1050615003 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 3 is a repeat with deuterium plasmas at constant active MHD frequency. There appears to be a very broad resonance around 1.15 s. |
| Jun 15 2005 10:14:09:563AM | 1050615004 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 4 has the hybrid TAE frequency enabled ([0,0] on hybrid_local J221:input_09)
with a +/-100 kHz sweep. Density feedback failed at 0.65 s sending the active MHD frequency to 1 MHz. |
| Jun 15 2005 10:38:25:577AM | 1050615005 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 5 increased the hybrid frequency sweep rate to 1.5 MHz/s. Dud! |

| Jun 15 2005 09:29:00:610AM | 1050615001 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Limited during the flattop. Disrupts upward during rampdown. Ip=0.8 MA, Btor ramps from 6 to 4 T during flattop. nl_04=1.3 even though gas is off for most of the shot. Startup was awful...it hit something outside early on. Next shot: repeat, no changes NOTE: I mistakenly have the machine set up with helium for the plasma. (I copied the run plan from a helium run day and didn't catch it.) |
| Jun 15 2005 09:35:52:430AM | 1050615002 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot, but helium plasma. We want deuterium. My mistake. Limited, Btor ramp. Density is still high. Next shot: change over to D2. Turn on argon (50 ms pulse). Tweak ZXU late in shot. |
| Jun 15 2005 10:01:16:237AM | 1050615003 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Deuterium plasma this time (and for the rest of the run). Limited, 0.8 MA, Bt sweep. Startup looked very good. No rampdown disruption this time, but something took a notch out of the plasma current at t=0.122 during the rampup. Next shot: Joe will start using the DPCS-calculated real-time Alfven frequency. |
| Jun 15 2005 10:21:57:417AM | 1050615004 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Density feedback signal went haywire, resulting in a big density ramp after t=0.7 s. Startup doesn't look too good...pressure is high. Next shot: shorten pre-fill pulse by 2 ms. |
| Jun 15 2005 10:37:51:233AM | 1050615005 | Robert Granetz | Dud. Looks like it wants the higher pre-fill pressure. Next shot: add the 2 ms back in and another 1 ms for good measure. |
| Jun 15 2005 10:53:15:233AM | 1050615006 | Robert Granetz | ACK failure. The shot cycle didn't do anything. Strange one. Next shot: try again. |
| Jun 15 2005 11:14:01:077AM | 1050615007 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Deuterium. Limited, 0.8 MA, Bt ramp. Kappa=1.35, triangularity=0.22-0.25. nl_04=1.0e20 m-2, as desired. Still a lousy startup, but don't touch. Next shot: elongate the plasma by raising ZXL and lowering ZXU, each by 2.5 cm. |
| Jun 15 2005 11:26:06:633AM | 1050615008 | Robert Granetz | Dud. Null looks okay. Next shot: add 2 more ms to pre-fill (to 25 ms) |
| Jun 15 2005 11:43:50:207AM | 1050615009 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.5 s. Elongation actually went down slightly (1.35 -> 1.30). Next shot: reload ZXL and ZXU from shot 7 and then increase CLEARIN (i.e. make less negative) by 1.5 cm. |
| Jun 15 2005 12:01:35:717PM | 1050615010 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Elongation increased to 1.50-1.55, and still remained limited. Don't know if it helped the MHD antenna coupling. Next shot: increase CLEARIN another 0.5 cm to increase elongation even more. |
| Jun 15 2005 12:11:03:620PM | 1050615011 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Elongation=1.68 - 1.62. Barely stayed limited. Next shot: repeat, but with only one MHD antenna instead of both. Also reduce Br0 offset by 0.4 mT. |
| Jun 15 2005 12:37:53:920PM | 1050615012 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Similar to previous shot. Next shot: no PCS changes. |
| Jun 15 2005 12:41:01:630PM | 1050615013 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Similar to previous two shots. Next shot; increase RCUR by 0.5 cm so that the plasma just barely limits on the outboard limiter, is still hard limited on the inboard wall, and yet still maintains high elongation. |
| Jun 15 2005 01:14:47:270PM | 1050615014 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Disrupted early because it limited hard on the outer limiter. I moved RCUR by 5 cm rather that 0.5 cm. Another physop mistake. Next shot: reload RCUR from shot 13 and move it out 0.5 cm, this time correctly. |
| Jun 15 2005 01:29:29:767PM | 1050615015 | Robert Granetz | No-power shot cycle. There's a problem with the shot cycle. |
| Jun 15 2005 01:59:21:780PM | 1050615016 | Robert Granetz | Dud. Br0 is a little low. Pre-fill pressure also dropped a bit. Next shot: raise Br0 offset back to today's starting value and increase pre-fill pulse another 2 ms (to 27 ms). NINJA will puff D2 at t=1.2 s. |
| Jun 15 2005 02:11:23:670PM | 1050615017 | Robert Granetz | Dud. Everything looks pretty good. Next shot: add -15 A to IC_EF4 (to -1295 A) |
| Jun 15 2005 02:28:55:247PM | 1050615018 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Remained limited on inboard wall and outboard gap varied between 3 mm and 0 mm. Kapp=1.6. Startup remains lousy. Next shot: repeat; no DPCS changes. |
| Jun 15 2005 02:39:43:793PM | 1050615019 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Similar to previous one. Next shot: reduce kappa to 1.2-1.3 by decreasing CLEARIN to -4 cm. Keep RCUR the same, so the outer gap remains close to zero. LPI will move to t=1.6 s (was at 1.75 s). |
| Jun 15 2005 02:58:28:310PM | 1050615020 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.38 s. Inboard limited, although the outer gap gets down to zero just before the disruption. Kappa=1.34. Next shot: reduce CLEARIN to -4.7 cm and move RCUR in later in the shot. Also, get rid of the Btor ramp...set Btor to 5.4 T (flat) |
| Jun 15 2005 03:11:01:337PM | 1050615021 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Disrupted very early due to impurity injections. Lots of glowing particlulates can be seen on the JANT video view (frame 7, t=0.211 s) Next shot: repeat, no changes. |
| Jun 15 2005 03:27:21:157PM | 1050615022 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Elongation=1.28 until t=1.2 s, then it increases a little. Outboard gap=2-3 mm. Next shot: reduce elongation a little more by lowering CLEARIN to -5.0 cm. |
| Jun 15 2005 03:42:20:997PM | 1050615023 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Elongation=1.26 until t=1.2 s, then increases. So I didn't make enough of a change to CLEARIN. Also, the outer gap goes to zero late in the flattop. Next shot: reduce CLEARIN some more (even more later in the shot), and move RCUR in a little late in the shot. |
| Jun 15 2005 03:57:21:583PM | 1050615024 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.50 s due to impurity injection, but I couldn't find it on any of the video views. Elongation at t=0.5 s is 1.20, which is what we want for the entire flattop. Next shot: repeat, no changes. |
| Jun 15 2005 04:17:01:543PM | 1050615025 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Elongation=1.21 for most of the flattop. Just touched the outer limiter late in the flattop. Next shot: lower Bt to 4.6 T and reduce the elongation further (CLEARIN) and move RCUR a little again, late in the shot. |
| Jun 15 2005 04:28:12:447PM | 1050615026 | Robert Granetz | Fizzle. Next shot: reduce pre-fill by 2 ms, lower Br0 offset by 0.1 mT. |
| Jun 15 2005 04:47:01:517PM | 1050615027 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.73 s, again due to an injection. Kappa=1.17. Next shot: load a 1 MA fiducial, but reduce Ip to 0.8 MA, Bt to 4.6 T, and make the outer gap small. |
| Jun 15 2005 04:58:19:480PM | 1050615028 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good 1 MA, 5.4 T, SNL fiducial, but I didn't want that. Next shot: 0.8 MA, 4.6 T, small outer gap. |
| Jun 15 2005 05:18:30:780PM | 1050615029 | Robert Granetz | Plasma. Good shot. Disrupted at t=1.40 s due to an impurity injection. 0.8 MA, 4.6 T, SNL. Outer gap = 10 -> 9 -> 8 mm. nl_04=1.0e20 m-2. End of run. |
