| MP #419: 'Fiducial wall pumping measurements for comparing operating conditions'
There are several goals for this afternoon: We are looking for 1 MA shots with densities just under nl04=1.e20. We need the shots not to disrupt through to current reaching close to zero. The amount of RF has to be constant, shot to shot. 1) see if the wall pumping is the same at this point as it was pre-titaniumization. This will require several shots. But we will be seeing if the wall pumping saturates as well. SO this will require at least 5 constant shots. The equilibrium used will be 1050610020. The amount of RF to be determined as mentioned earlier. 2) Vary the wetted area to see if that affects the pumping. We will start with LSN on the vertical target (step 1). Then move to inner wall limited (Granetz to supply shot number from last week). Finally to upper single null (shot 1050608014 for equilibrium). 3) We would also like to know if the pumping saturates with length of shots (fluence). This will require several shots at verious flattop periods varying from 0., 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 seconds. The density may be down, more like 0.85. Likely not time enough today. |

| MP419 - 'Fiducial wall pumping measurements for comparing operating conditions'
1050620 Two pieces of information from this run: 1) Continued shot after shot repetition of the same shot did not lead quickly to saturation: If saturation of the wall is occurring it is slowly. There did appear to be some drop in pumping. But then, in the 4th shot of the sequence (20) we corrected the density dropping slightly and the wall pumping came up a bit. In the last shot of the sequence, we got an H-mode and the pumping was in line with earlier shots. 2) Changing the wetted surface led to changes in wall pumping: When we shifted the strike point off of the vertical plate to the floor (23-26) the pumping dropped by a factor of 2.5-3. When we went to USN (28-30) the pumping returned to values almost as high as with the strike point on the lower vertical plate. Unfortunately, the inner wall limited shots (32-34) were disruptive and the pumping results for those equilibria are not comparable. Certainly the density was high during those shots, above the programmed value (and the feedback gas turned off) implying that the wall was seriously outgassing during the shot. On the last shot (35) we switched to outer limited. The wall pumping was the highest of the day BUT, this shot followed several disruptions and the divertor pressures were 35 mT, almost as high as for LSN plasmas (40 mT), indicating that the plasma was not really limited. More work needed here. I should mention that when we returned to the vertical plate (shot 27) the wall pumping was the same as earlier in the run. Lastly, the values for wall pumping with the strike point on the vertical plaate (LSN) were similar to that of 1050412 run, pre-sboronization and pre-titaniumization. So, it appears on a gross level that the wall pumping is that we are operating 'normally'. |

| The run had two parts, first completion of MP 296, Thomson Calibration, then continuation of MP 419 on Wall Pumping Studies.
The machine ran well for both MP's. The Thomson calibrations were completed about half way through the run. The only difficulty encountered during the entire run was trying to avoid a disruption during rampdown for a limiter shot, the last part of MP 419. This will take some work, possibly moving the plasma to the outside limiter during rampdown. Early in the run, there was some difficulty in getting a reliable startup. The situation was improved by a suggestion of Steve Wolfe, who recommended importing segment 1 from an optimized startup, namely shot 1050525001. From this point onward (shot 9) there were no problems with startup with one exception: shot 31 which was a full bore dud for which absolutely no reason was evident. Scorecard: 4 fizzles, 1 dud and 29 full length plasmas. About 10 minutes were lost due to one data system hangup, and two of the full length shots were improperly loaded (Operator Error). All in all, a successful run. |

| Jun 20 2005 08:45:18:290AM | 1050620001 | Ron Parker | Good morning! Today we'll try to make up the run scheduled for last
Thursday, 6/16/06. Assuming success with the Thomson calibration, we'll move on to wall pumping experiments. |
| Jun 20 2005 09:17:52:050AM | 1050620001 | Ron Parker | Patience folks, OH needs to cool a few more degrees. |
| Jun 20 2005 09:50:41:520AM | 1050620001 | Ron Parker | First shot was a fizzle, fill pressure was high, 0.2 mT.
But programmed pulse was short??? On next shot, pulse gas prefill increased by 5 ms. |
| Jun 20 2005 09:37:56:760AM | 1050620002 | Ron Parker | Shot 002 ran OK, as programmed. Disrupts on current rampdown.
Next shot: Field during flat top increased from 3.9 to 4.0 T. |
| Jun 20 2005 09:43:57:087AM | 1050620003 | Ron Parker | Shot 003 fizzled, breakdown a bit late and fill pressure now ~0.06 mT.
Walls loaded up aftershot 002. For next shot, 3 ms taken off pulse gas. |
| Jun 20 2005 10:02:50:953AM | 1050620004 | Ron Parker | Shot 004 ran, breakdown OK, but fill pressure still a bit high.
Next: reduce puff by 2 ms, also reduce Bz(0) offset by 10 A. |
| Jun 20 2005 10:09:14:000AM | 1050620005 | Ron Parker | Shot 005 fizzled, fill gas is still a bit too high. Reduce to 16 ms gas puff. |
| Jun 20 2005 10:31:48:943AM | 1050620006 | Ron Parker | Shot 006 ran OK, as programmed. Still disrupts on rampdown going vertically unstable. |
| Jun 20 2005 10:35:56:113AM | 1050620007 | Ron Parker | Shot 007 fizzled. It seems that every other shot is fizzling.
No changes, see if the next shot runs. |
| Jun 20 2005 10:56:43:357AM | 1050620008 | Ron Parker | Shot 8 ran, good breakdown, disruption now at 500 kA.
Steve suggests using an optimized startup from 1050525001 and this is implemented on next shot. Meanwhile, data system hung on shot 008. Short (hopefully) delay. |
| Jun 20 2005 05:17:52:397PM | 1050620009 | Ron Parker | Shot 9 ran OK, breakdown was later, 7 ms as compared with 5 ms for previous startup. No change for next shot except to touch up Bz(0).
Data system delay was about 10 minutes |
| Jun 20 2005 11:34:31:200AM | 1050620010 | Ron Parker | Shot 10 ran OK, breakdown back to 5 ms with EF 4 at -1300 (from -1310).
Next shot: field reset to 3.9 T from 4.0) and argon puff added at 0.3 s, for 40 ms. |
| Jun 20 2005 11:45:20:383AM | 1050620011 | Ron Parker | Shot ran OK, breakdown early (5 ms). Still disrupting at 500 kA.
Fill pressure perhaps a tad too high, 0.05 mTorr. Reduce prefill by 1 ms.for next shot. Gas puff delayed by another 50 ms. |
| Jun 20 2005 12:00:31:520PM | 1050620012 | Ron Parker | Shot 012 ran OK. Next: BT increased from 3.90 to 3.95 T. |
| Jun 20 2005 12:13:37:233PM | 1050620013 | Ron Parker | Shot 13 ran OK, but disrupted at 850 kA.
Next: Same shot. |
| Jun 20 2005 12:26:56:010PM | 1050620014 | Ron Parker | Shot 14 ran OK. Still disrupts at 850 kA during ramp down.
Next: BT increased to 4.05 T. |
| Jun 20 2005 12:39:26:380PM | 1050620015 | Ron Parker | Shot 015 ran OK. This ends MP 296 part of run.
Next: Begin MP 419 part of run, with shot 1050610020 loaded in segment 2. Segment 1 remains the same as in other shots today. |
| Jun 20 2005 12:53:53:373PM | 1050620016 | Ron Parker | Shot 016 looked good. Early startup, full rampdown to 0 current.
RF power ~ 1 MW, no H-mode. Fill pressure could be a tad too high, 0.046 Torr No change for next shot. |
| Jun 20 2005 01:21:26:473PM | 1050620017 | Ron Parker | Shot 017 was a repeat of shot 016. Good shot. |
| Jun 20 2005 05:11:24:947PM | 1050620018 | Ron Parker | Shot 018 was another fine shot, running as programmed with early breakdown
and full rampdown to ~ 0 kA. There will be a small delay awaiting instructions from SL. |
| Jun 20 2005 01:33:13:263PM | 1050620019 | Ron Parker | Another good shot. Next: Extend density flattop to 1.3 ms. |
| Jun 20 2005 01:49:10:120PM | 1050620020 | Ron Parker | Shot 20 looked good, density flattop extended as requested.
Next: same shot, with 1 ms off gas prepuff. |
| Jun 20 2005 02:04:16:643PM | 1050620021 | Ron Parker | Sorry folks, I know it's a bit boring.
Shot 21 ran well, essentially repeat of previous two shots. However, fill pressure has creeped up to 0.05 mTorr and breakdown is delayed to 10 ms. Prefill pulse reduced to 12 ms. We'll sweep the lower X-point 1-1.5 cm further to the inside for the next shot. |
| Jun 20 2005 02:16:56:013PM | 1050620022 | Ron Parker | Shot 22 ran well, breakdown back to 5.5 ms and lower X-point
moved as requested. Next: Move the X-pont further inside, ~ 0.5 to 1.0 cm. Also changed IC EF4 to -1305. |
| Jun 20 2005 05:11:53:620PM | 1050620023 | Ron Parker | Shot 23 ran OK.
Next: Tweak RXl a bit to keep strike point from hitting indentation on divertor floor. |
| Jun 20 2005 02:41:21:473PM | 1050620024 | Ron Parker | Shot 24 ran well. One more shot here and we'll switch to upper null. |
| Jun 20 2005 02:55:55:640PM | 1050620025 | Ron Parker | Shot 25 was OK. One more shot (26) here, at same conditions. |
| Jun 20 2005 03:12:38:790PM | 1050620026 | Ron Parker | Shot 26 ran as programmed.
Next shot: upper null, from shot 1050608014. |
| Jun 20 2005 03:37:31:107PM | 1050620027 | Ron Parker | Sorry folks, that was not an upper null shot. Wrong segment from shot 1050608014 was used. Should be OK this time. |
| Jun 20 2005 03:38:20:560PM | 1050620028 | Ron Parker | OK, that was the single null shot.
But the outer gap was varying because Rcur was not constant. Should be fixed for next shot. |
| Jun 20 2005 03:53:56:803PM | 1050620029 | Ron Parker | Shot 29 ran OK. Continue with slight tweaking of Rcur. |
| Jun 20 2005 03:55:14:100PM | 1050620030 | Ron Parker | Shot 30 ran OK, last upper single null shot.
Next: Limited inner wall shots, starting with 1050615022, but with 1 MA current.. |
| Jun 20 2005 04:15:42:047PM | 1050620031 | Ron Parker | Shot 31 was a dud, reason not evident.
Try again. |
| Jun 20 2005 04:39:01:757PM | 1050620032 | Ron Parker | Shot 32 went off as programmed. Why was previous shot a dud???
|
| Jun 20 2005 04:40:34:647PM | 1050620033 | Ron Parker | Shot 33 ran but disrupted shortly after inversion in spite of attempts to
circularize it during ramp down. For shot 34, we'll revert to reloaded shot 32. |
| Jun 20 2005 04:56:36:560PM | 1050620034 | Ron Parker | For the next and last shot, shot 020 will be rerun, but clearin and Rcur will be adjusted so that the plasma will lean on the outer limiter. |
