This run will collect edge profile data over a range of Bt, Ip, with
RF power varied during each shot. We will run long H-modes in some
shots, and administer a D2 puff from the NINJA (usually from the inner
wall, but we might try outboard puffing too).

*NINJA enabled with 40psi D2.
*GPC2 should start the day set to ~4.4T, with a change to 5.4T partway
through run.
*GPI camera should be configured to image background D-alpha.

A. Begin by loading 1050428027 (Bt=4.4 T, Ip=0.9MA, nl~0.9e20).
RF request: flat 2.0MW from 0.60-0.80s
flat 2.5MW from 0.95-1.15s
flat 3.0MW from 1.30-1.50s
Run until satisfactory data are obtained.
B. Run a series of shots using same RF scheme, but with different Ip,
Bt.
~2 shots: 4.4T, 1.2MA (q95~2.6) nl=1.2e20
~1 shot: 4.4T, 0.9MA (q95~3.5) nl=0.9e20
~1 shot: 4.4T, 0.6MA (q95~5.2) nl=0.6e20
~1 shot: 4.4T, 0.4MA (q95~7.8) nl=0.4e20
C. Lab access to change GPC over to 5.4T. Run these shots with same RF
scheme, except were noted:
~2 shots: 5.4T, 0.4MA (q95~9.6) nl=0.4e20
~2 shots: same as previous, with 2.5MW RF from 0.7-1.3s;
D2 puff from 1.0-1.5s
~1 shot: 5.4T, 0.6MA (q95~6.4) nl=0.6e20
~2 shots: same as previous, with 2.5MW RF from 0.7-1.3s
D2 puff from 1.0-1.5s
~1 shots: 6.2T, 0.6MA (q95~7.3) nl=0.6e20
~1 shots: 6.2T, 0.9MA (q95~4.9) nl=0.9e20
~1 shots: 5.4T, 0.9MA (q95~4.3) nl=0.9e20
~2 shots: same as previous, with 2.5MW RF from 0.7-1.3s
D2 puff from 1.0-1.5s
~1 shots: 5.4T, 1.2MA (q95~3.2) nl=1.2e20
~2 shots: same as previous, with 2.5MW RF from 0.7-1.3s
D2 puff from 1.0-1.5s
~1 shots: 6.2T, 1.2MA (q95~3.7) nl=1.2e20
~2 shots: 6.2T, 1.5MA (q95~2.9) nl=1.5e20
~2 shots: 5.4T, 1.5MA (q95~2.6) nl=1.5e20
~2 shots: 6.2T, 1.8MA (q95~2.4) nl=1.5e20

SL reserves the right to play with these exact parameters and the
ordering of shots.

Essential diagnostics: Thomson, GPC, TCI, bolometry, PCI. Scanning
probes, if available. Will use GPI camera to image background D-alpha,
and will probably want to adjust gains on the Xybion camera on the
fly.

MP410: Extension of pedestal scalings

PO: J. Snipes

The purpose of this run was to push machine parameter space in current
and field and examine pedestal profiles at each data point. Some
shots from run 1050428 were repeated for purposes of comparison, since
we began today with a fresh boronization, and the previous run was far
from well-conditioned. Radiated power was low at the beginning of the
day, and good EDA H-modes were obtained using 2--3MW ICRF. As the day
progressed, radiated power increased, even for shots that should have
been solidly EDA, such as the 5.4T, 0.9MA shot 19. The indication
seems to be the boronization does not last a single day. Large D2
puffs from the NINJA system were administered into several discharges,
resulting in reduced radiative power and steadier H-modes. However, at
lower Ip, and thus lower pedestal density, the massive gas injections
tended to kill the H-modes, rather than preserve them. Plenty of good
edge Thomson and PCI data were obtained, as well as background D-alpha
from the GPI camera. All in all, a successful run, covering most of
the parameter space called for in Part I of MP 410. Thanks to
everyone who helped with this run.

It was an excellent run. The machine ran very well over a broad range of plasma currents, toroidal fields, and densities. All except the very highest current point at 1.8 MA requested by the run plan were achieved. We learned that the DNB pumps the chamber substantially so that the prepuff needs to be increased by several ms (20%) to provide enough gas for the breakdown when the DNB gate valve is open and that if the DNB gate valve is then closed, the prepuff needs to be programmed several (3 - 4 ms) lower to get a sustained breakdown. We managed to run several 1.5 MA full length plasmas at both 6.2 T and 5.4 T, though one disrupted due to an injection. When we attempted 1.8 MA at 6.2 T, however, the plasma disrupted at 1.6 MA apparently because the current limit on EF3 was set too low. It was set to 12 kA, but actually limited the current to 10.5 kA. So, in order to run such high currents, we need to increase the EF3 current limit to 15 kA. Despite the two high current disruptions, the machine ran very well. See the session leader summary for more physics details.

GPC spanning center, T0 at Ch 6. Serious cutoff in H-modes.
Jun 24 2005 09:30:25:827AM1050624001Jerry Hughes4.4T, 0.9MA. Shot ran properly. nl exceeds target after 0.6s. J-port gives no
power. 2 H-modes at ~1,1.3MW. QCM is there.
Next shot: re-attempt.
Jun 24 2005 09:32:11:467AM1050624002Jerry HughesNo plasma.
Next shot: re-attempt
Jun 24 2005 09:49:35:093AM1050624003Jerry Hughes4.4T, 0.9MA. Goes into H-mode at ~1.1MW, and stays there even efter RF shuts
off. QCM is clearly there.
Next shot: Ip to 1.2MA, nl04->1.2e20
Jun 24 2005 09:51:30:593AM1050624004Jerry HughesNo plasma
Next shot: re-attempt
Jun 24 2005 10:23:29:827AM1050624005Jerry HughesPretty good. 4.4T, 1.2MA, Long H-mode, QCM is pretty clear, even at q~2.8.
Power room access for RF guys.
Next shot: re-attempt, try to get more power
Jun 24 2005 10:23:57:093AM1050624006Jerry HughesNo plasma
Next shot: retry 5, but with nl04-->0.9e20
Jun 24 2005 10:39:54:450AM1050624007Jerry Hughes4.4T, 1.2MA. A few ELM-free H-modes. Lowering target density seems to have
worked.
Next shot: Ip-->0.9MA, nl04-->0.7e20. Basically shot 3 with lower target nl.
Jun 24 2005 10:53:48:890AM1050624008Jerry Hughes4.4T, 0.9MA. H-modes look ELM-free, but QCM is sometimes there.
Next shot: Ip-->0.6MA, nl04-->0.6e20.
Jun 24 2005 11:21:28:577AM1050624009Jerry Hughes4.4T, 0.6MA. 3 H-modes. QCM is broader at this current.
Next shot: Ip-->0.4MA, nl04-->0.4e20
Jun 24 2005 11:20:22:750AM1050624010Jerry Hughes4.4T, 0.4MA. Some weak H-modes. J-port kind of ratty. First H-mode kicks in
before Ip has reached a stable value. QCM is there, and broad.
Radiated power much lower than for the same discharge on 1050428.
Next shot: repeat.
Jun 24 2005 11:40:06:577AM1050624011Amanda HubbardOn this and shot 10, note that sawteeth disappear for long periods duing H-modes. An effect of ITBs?? Or locked modes?
Jun 24 2005 11:42:44:843AM1050624011Jerry Hughes4.4T, 0.4MA. 3 H-modes. QCM very broad.
Next shot: Bt-->5.4T
Jun 24 2005 11:39:24:967AM1050624012Amanda HubbardGPC2 changed to 1.5 mm, for 5.4-6.2 T. Will take a shot or two to calibrate as I haven't used this grating in a while.
Jun 24 2005 11:49:58:467AM1050624012Jerry Hughes5.4T, 0.4MA. Good shot. q95~9. 3 EDA H-modes. Prad higher in first H-mode than in
the others.
Next shot: repeat
Jun 24 2005 11:59:26:670AM1050624013Jerry Hughes5.4T, 0.4MA. Almost identical to shot 12. 3 H-modes.
Next shot: Same plasma, long RF pulse, D2 puff beginning at 1s.
Jun 24 2005 12:26:07:623PM1050624014Jerry Hughes5.4T, 0.4MA. Inner wall NINJA capillary was set up to open at 0.9s.
RF is good. Fairly hot pedestal, with some ELMs. Shortly after 1s, puff comes in, kills the H-mode. Looks like 2 or 3 TS points during the H-mode puff.
Plasma fuels to death at ~1.5s
Next shot: 5.4T, 0.6MA, back to default RF program.
Jun 24 2005 12:30:43:843PM1050624015Jerry Hughes5.4T, 0.6MA. Good shot. 3 H-modes.
Next shot: Long RF pulse, with NINJA puff enabled.
Jun 24 2005 12:46:59:643PM1050624016Jerry Hughes5.4T, 0.6MA. RF is good. A bump in radiated power occurs at ~0.9s, dropping
edge Te. NINJA seems to come in shortly after 1s, H-mode dies. Disruption shortly
thereafter.
Next shot: Bt-->6.2T, no puff. RF back to staircase.
Jun 24 2005 01:02:37:270PM1050624017Jerry Hughes6.2T, 0.6MA. RF is good. 3 good L-H transitions. QCM visible on PCI.
Some considerable bursts in Prad.
Next shot: Ip-->0.9MA, nl-->0.9e20
Jun 24 2005 01:16:50:753PM1050624018Jerry Hughes6.2T, 0.9MA. RF is good. 3 H-modes, a bit radiative.
QC mode is all broken up in the 2nd H-mode.
Next shot: Bt-->5.4
Jun 24 2005 01:26:51:630PM1050624019Jerry Hughes5.4T, 0.9MA. 3 H-modes, increasingly radiative.
Next shot: long RF pulse, with puff at 1s.
Jun 24 2005 01:45:30:300PM1050624020Jerry Hughes5.4T, 0.9MA. Good shot, with long RF pulse, puff at 1s. nl04 rises after 1s,
H-mode stays intact, just like in our gas-puffing experiment of 2002. n_e pedestal height doesn't change much during puff.
Next shot: 5.4T, 1.2MA, nl-->1.2e20, RF staircase.
Jun 24 2005 02:00:53:350PM1050624021Jerry Hughes5.4T, 1.2MA. Good shot, but Ip flattop is a little short. Asking Joe to push the
current rise somewhat.
3 H-modes,
Next shot: Repeat.
Jun 24 2005 02:07:02:583PM1050624022Jerry Hughes5.4T, 1.2MA. Longer flattop. Multiple H-modes, traces of QCM.
RF is very clean, but there are injections.
Very dense pedestal.
Next shot: Long pulse RF, No puff
Jun 24 2005 02:25:06:177PM1050624023Jerry Hughes5.4T, 1.2MA. Getting very radiative. Lose H-mode briefly at 1.03s. RF is fairly
good. ETS data are good.
Next shot: Have Kenny add NINJA puff, at roughly 0.9s.
Jun 24 2005 02:26:28:130PM1050624024Jerry HughesNo plasma.
Next shot: Retry.
Jun 24 2005 02:47:51:410PM1050624025Jerry Hughes5.4T, 1.2MA. This is a good shot. 2pi foil is climbing until 0.9s, when NINJA
starts flowing in D2. Edge Te drops, Prad drops, and the H-mode is sustained until
1.32s. QCM is there throughout. n_e,ped roughly constant. T_e,ped suppressed.
Next shot: Bt-->6.2T, RF staircase.
Jun 24 2005 02:51:09:957PM1050624026Jerry HughesNo plasma
Next shot: Retry
Jun 24 2005 03:13:15:520PM1050624027Jerry Hughes6.2T, 1.2MA. Good shot, with steady RF. Too much radiation in 1st H-mode, but the
last two are reasonable. QCM can be seen.
Next shot: Ip-->1.5MA, nl-->1.5e20
Jun 24 2005 03:28:40:830PM1050624028Jerry Hughes6.2T, 1.5MA. Some short H-modes early, and longer one in rampdown.
Next shot: same shot, long RF pulse at 3MW.
Jun 24 2005 03:39:21:113PM1050624029Jerry Hughes6.2T, 1.5MA. Two H-modes in flattop; first one lost when Prad surpasses 4MW.
n_e,ped~5e20. Max Wp of 192kJ
Next shot: same shot
Jun 24 2005 04:04:13:770PM1050624030Jerry Hughes6.2T, 1.5MA. Couple of short H-modes, then disruption. Seems to be due to injection.
Next shot: retry
Jun 24 2005 04:10:58:643PM1050624031Jerry Hughes6.2T, 1.5MA. ELM-free H-modes, with high Prad. Not much QCM evident on PCI.
Next shot: Bt-->5.4T
Jun 24 2005 04:28:02:380PM1050624032Jerry Hughes5.4T, 1.5MA. Many ELM-free H-modes. Very high Prad.
Plasma appears starved for density.
Next shot: Repeat, with NINJA puff at 1s
Jun 24 2005 04:44:23:957PM1050624033Jerry Hughes5.4T, 1.5MA. ~3MW. NINJA puff at 1s. Nice effect on radiated power. Basically end up with a steady EDA (with poor confinement).
Next shot: Ip-->1.8MA. Delay RF, and keep puff.
Jun 27 2005 12:32:27:977PM1050624033Jerry HughesDensity rise from 0.665--0.709s does not appear to be an H-mode. It is coincident with the plasma briefly
going inner wall limited.
Jun 24 2005 04:53:14:143PM1050624034Jerry HughesNo plasma.
Next shot: retry. NINJA is being pumped to 20psi.

Jun 24 2005 03:06:07:707PM1050624027Joseph SnipesShot 27: Lowered prepuff by 2 ms to 15 ms duration. Good shot.
Jun 24 2005 03:24:47:113PM1050624028Joseph SnipesShot 28: Increased prepuff by 1 ms to 16 ms duration. Raised Ip to 1.5 MA from 0.675 s to 1.2 s. Raised nl04 to 1.5 x 10^20 m^-2. Good shot.
Jun 24 2005 04:01:52:003PM1050624030Joseph SnipesShot 30: Repeat. Disrupted at 0.82 s at 1.5 MA. Halo current warning with
I_halo*Bt > 1500 cats.
Jun 24 2005 04:06:55:503PM1050624031Joseph SnipesShot 31: Repeat. Good shot. Many radiative H-modes. Plasma ramped nearly all the way down.
Jun 24 2005 04:19:16:457PM1050624032Joseph SnipesShot 32: TF current reduced to 150 kA for 5.4 T, which should bring q95 down to 2.7. Good shot.
Jun 24 2005 04:34:07:520PM1050624033Joseph SnipesShot 33: Repeat with NINJA D2 puffing. Good shot.
Jun 24 2005 04:45:23:130PM1050624034Joseph SnipesShot 34: Raised Ip to 1.8 MA and TF current to 173 kA for 6.2 T. Fizzle!
Jun 24 2005 05:10:06:783PM1050624035Joseph SnipesShot 35: Reduced Br0 by 0.5 mT to -0.5 mT. Disrupted at 0.86 s at 1.6 MA. Plasma is pushed up against the outboard limiter for some unknown reason. Current limit on EF3 is set to 12 kA, but it appears to actually limit at about 10.5 kA and that loses control of the plasma shape after about 0.68 s. The EF3 current limit needs to be set to 15 kA to run such a high plasma current.
