1050706*** MP 415 â??Toroidal rotation in dimensionally similar discharges with no momentum inputâ?? SL: J.S. deGrassie, J.E. Rice The goal is to run C-MOD discharges with dimensionless similarity to discharges run in DIII-D and measure the toroidal rotation velocity, thereby establishing whether non-driven rotation can be described in some way by the dimensionless parameters. These are to be H-mode discharges as much in steady state as possible. The desirability of this experiment was not anticipated when the DIII-D discharges were run, so there is some shape adjustment necessary to come close to the DIII-D shape in C-MOD. 1. We will start by replicating DIII-D 118190.01850 scaled to C-MOD: Bt= 6.0T q95= 4.9, n=3.9^20 (n/nG ~ 0.7) ,T_0= 2.2keV 2. Modify Beta and q95, with product the same as case 1. Bt= 6.0T q95= 7, n=2.7^20 (n/nG ~ 0.6), T_0= 2.2keV 3. Vary Beta from case 1 at same q95. Bt= 5.3T, q95= 4.9, n=2.1^20 (n/nG ~ 0.4), T_0= 1.65keV 4. Vary Collisionality from case 1, at same q95. Bt= 5.3T, q95= 4.9, n=4.1^20 (n/nG ~ 0.8), T_0= 1.45keV 5. Parameters for similar match to DIII-D lower q95 discharge, 111154.02000. Bt= 6.0T, q95= 3.1, n=4.9^20 (n/nG ~ 0.5), T_0= 2.0keV |

Physop Plan for Wednesday, 6-July-2005 MP#425 Torque-free rotation - DIII-D Similarity SL: Degrassie, Rice PO: Wolfe Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00 Overnight boronization required before this run PEI settings 44/52/103 (Rmin/Rres/Rmax) followed by 4 hours ECDC in He and 1 hour D2 ECDC. Engineering Setup ------------------ Power systems as on 1050705 EXCEPT: TF current limit to 175kA A-coil in standard configuration (+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot) C-coil start=0.3sec, invert=2.0sec All ICRF transmitters in RUN-ON by 8:30 Gas setup: ---------- fill B-top 6psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower 1.5psi Argon, Hybrid enabled (PG1) leave B-side upper as is, Hybrid DISABLED fill B-side main 40psi D2, Hybrid Enabled (PG3) Enable ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutter (assuming no vacuum problems) Run Plan -------- The first several shots will be a combination of boronization recovery and equilibrium development. The target is DIII-D shot 118190 at about 1850msec, with upper and lower triangularity increased somewhat to clear the C-Mod divertor hardware. The parameters of the target are kappa=1.8, delta_u=0.15, delta_l=0.32. We will be starting at a field of 6.0T and aiming for a qpsib=4.9, which is expected to correspond to a current around 900kA. I'll start from the JET-like geometry used on 1050415001 Segment 2 and: Change TF to 6.0 T (166700 A) Change PG1 (Argon puff) to 40msec Change Ip to 0.9 MA (and extend flattop to 1.5sec) Raise ZCUR to 0 Decrease CLEARIN from 0.015 to 0.005 (and extend flattop) Decrease RCUR by .005 Decrease ZXL by .01 (to start) Decrease RXL by .01 Increase RXU by .01 (to start) Leave ZXU unchanged (to start) RF should try for flat waveform from 0.7 to 1.2sec; try for 3.0MW to start, and we will adjust up and down to match target temperature and/or beta. Continue to adjust shape and Ip to match q95=4.9 at B=6.0 The initial density (in H-mode) should be nebar=3.9e20; adjust target density to try to control this. Initial target temperature is 2.2keV (target betat=1.0 to 1.1%); adjust RF power to match. This is condition C2-1 from SL's spreadsheet. Document rotation. C2-2: Reduce current to get q95=7.0 (guess is Ip~650kA) and target density to get nebar=2.7e20. Target temperature for RF is 2.2keV. Document rotation. C2-3: Decrease Bt to 5.3 T, repeat q95=4.9 (estimate Ip~800kA). Target density is 2.1e20 and Te=1.65keV. These conditions may be difficult to achieve in H-mode. If we can get them, document rotation. C2-4: Increase H-mode density to 4.1e20. Adjust RF to get Te=1.67keV, beta back to original value. Document rotation. If there is any time left, we can go back and try to cover the parameters of the lower q, higher current cases based on 111154 (Conditions C1-1 through C1-4 in the spreadsheet). |

| Run 1050706
The modified C-Mod shape (to fit more closely DIII-D) was the problem today. (See PhysOp summary.) We readily achieved the targeted similarity density range, but not the temperature range due to lack of coupled RF power. q95 was matched and rho* was close enough (goes as sqrt(T)), but not beta and nu*. However, these 'near DIII-D' cases will give a comparison for a future try with a more standard C-Mod shape to obtain higher RF power. (If only 'we' had anticipated this comparison we would have run the standard C-Mod shape in DIII-D. 20/20 hindsight.) A number of shots today had time slices that were at least in the right ballpark. The targeted values of Beta (nT/B^2) and nu (an/T^2) are 2.4 and 1.7, respectively (Run plan case C2-1). Shot #32 has a time slice at Beta~1.9 and nu~2.6, while shots 23,27 and 29 have a timeslice in the vicinity of Beta~1.8 and nu~2.3. 'Only' and additional 400eV or so was needed. Shots 19, 20, 22, and 25 also have time slices of interest. The toroidal Mach number, M, will be analyzed for these cases. Very preliminary analysis puts the C-Mod M at the same order of magnitude as for the DIII-D target shot. |

Physop summary for 1050706 MP#425 Torque-free rotation DIII-D similarity The goal of this experiment was to match DIII-D non-dimensional parameters from a ECH discharge (118190) which exhibited strong rotation, and compare the normalized rotation velocities. The plan was then to move to different values of q, beta, and nu* and determine the scaling of rotation with those parameters. We were unable to accomplish these goals. The target shape for the DIII-D match was a high elongation (kappa~1.8) low triangularity case. We knew we couldn't match the DIII-D aspect ratio, and would need to compromise on the triangularity because the scaled diii-d shape would have inter- sected the C-Mod outer divertor. The first half of the run was spent trying to get as good a shape and qpsi match as possible at the nomimal scaled field of 6.0T. The estimated current to get the desired q95=4.9 was 900kA, and we ended up finding a satisfactory match at 970kA. An example is shown below
Note that this equilibrium is almost touching the outboard limiter
near the top, and also is extremely close to the upper
surface of the outer divertor. This case is close to being
vertically unstable (n/nc~1.15) and we had a few vertical disruption
on the way to getting it.
Unfortunately, the RF was essentially unable to couple enough
power to this shape to achieve the necessary density and temperature.
In fact, we had no cases of fault-free rf pulses into this shape,
although at lower power we had some shots with only a few trips.
The RF group stated that the proximity to the antenna and
the asymmetric loading between top and bottom contributed to the
faulting problem. It is not believed that this was a conditioning
issue.
The run was also plagued by disruptions and fizzles. The disruptions
were partly due to vertical instability and partly to injections,
which may have been related to the shape; certainly we were
putting power in unusual places. We didn't get any halo current
warnings, unlike the case in the JET locked mode runs. Most of
the injection events were identified as Mo.
The fizzles were present from the beginning of the day, and were
mostly characterized by failure to burn-through
as observed on the Dalpha signal, which rose to about twice
the normal level and never came down. This phenomenon, which is
not typical, seems unrelated to the unusual shape since it appeared
already on the first two shots. Adjusting the pre-puff did not cure
the problem, and neither did decreasing bz by taking 15Amps off
ef4, although the latter may have helped a little.
During the run we had both argon (for HIREX) and neon (for NESOX)
puffing, the latter through Bside-upper. We also had NINJA on
for part of the run, but disabled again at shot#24, because I
thought it might have been responsible for some density ramp in
H-mode. Neon was turned off at shot#29 because NESOX had been
incorrectly tuned and wasn't seeing it anymore. There was no
indication either argon or neon were affecting the discharge.
Radiated power was not especially low, considering we had just
boronized, but it wasn't all that high except for injections,
which were frequent. It probably would have been worthwhile
to run a fiducial, but we didn't.
There were problems in the morning, and continuing through
the day, with water in the power room near the FMIT#3 and 4
transmitters, due to the heavy rain. Physical plant is hopefully going
to try to deal with this issue during maintenance week next week
(weather permitting).

| Jul 6 2005 02:46:03:627PM | 1050706023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: No changes plasma full length Drops out of hmode at 1sec, then back in. next shot: disable NINJA, see if it's causing the density rise in the H-mode phase |
| Jul 6 2005 03:02:57:923PM | 1050706024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24: No changes, except disable NINJA RF turning D off, raising power early on E and J fizzle. Br trace looks very strange. Dalpha still looks like its choking on gas. next shot: repeat |
| Jul 6 2005 03:14:33:970PM | 1050706025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: repeat plasma disrupts at .95sec. Looks like a Mo injection? bouncy startup, some runaways. Got to 3.2MW for a little while. Te gets above 2keV for a short while; that one was getting close until it got killed. next shot: PG1 (Argon) from 60->50ms |
| Jul 6 2005 03:25:41:627PM | 1050706026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: PG1 (Argon) from 60->50ms (per JR's request) Another early disruption, .69sec, before the RF? Startup looked better, one bounce but no runaways. Looks like another injection, but I'm going to back off on the acoil anyway; it's overdriving for these parameters Also, try raising the target density a little |
| Jul 6 2005 03:42:50:910PM | 1050706027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#27: Acoil changed from 2500 flat to [500,1500] nl04 from 1.0e20 to 1.2e20 Another disruption, later this time 1.1sec, in trouble at 1.0 RF on and off, and so are the Hmodes. John says it's a Mo injection before the disruption. Plasma is bouncing on the top of the divertor at every RF fault. Next shot: Increase D gain on RCUR from 6 to 9.9 after .65sec |
| Jul 6 2005 03:49:24:057PM | 1050706028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#28: Increase D gain on RCUR from 6 to 9.9 after .65sec RF is going to back the power down a little dud - No TF Chopper looks funny, but it's probably a feedback effect? next: no changes, try again |
| Jul 6 2005 04:04:32:893PM | 1050706029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#29: Increase D gain on RCUR from 6 to 9.9 after .65sec RF raised power Turn off neon puff from b-side upper plasma full length, early runaways. RF faulting more frequently, peak is 3.4MW but it is more off than on. Still getting big fast excursions in the rcur; the extra derivative gain doesn't seem to help much. next shot: back off on power, and increase outer gap by 2mm |
| Jul 6 2005 04:16:39:207PM | 1050706030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#30: increase outer gap by 2mm (Rcur down by 1mm) increase pg4 by 2ms to 18msec (last one bounced) rf dropping power to try to keep it on steady plasma full length, still multiple hmodes Still early runaways and a bouncy startup. On and off, 3MW. Density and temperature still too low. Try raising the target to 1.3, puffing into the hmode |
| Jul 6 2005 04:26:21:003PM | 1050706031 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#31: Increase target to nl04=1.3e20, program 2.2e20 during RF pulse fizzle. Dalpha stays high again. I don't understand this effect. It looks like something comes in at about 8-10msec just as it would normally burn through, and doubles the dalpha signal. No idea what to do about it, so just repeat. |
| Jul 6 2005 04:42:35:767PM | 1050706032 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#32: target at 1.3e20, h-mode density program=2.4e20 *which should give 3.9e20 nebar* plasma full length. Runaways are back. Bounces again. Got the density, actually a little too high but temperature is much too low. RF stays on for awhile at 3MW then loses it. next: drop nl04 demand in hmode to 2.2e20 |
| Jul 6 2005 04:51:01:753PM | 1050706033 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#33: drop nl04 demand in hmode to 2.2e20 fizzle. |
| Jul 6 2005 05:08:53:957PM | 1050706034 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#34: nl04 demand in hmode at 2.2e20 @0.9sec pg4 from 18 to 16msec plasma disrupted at 1.36sec (after the RF) bounces on startup, some runaways but not bad. One short hmode. Peak rf power 2.6MW and faulting away. Not close to what we want. |
