MP 390 D(He3) Minority Heating Evaluation at 50 MHz

SL: Wukitch/Lin
PO: Granetz

Engineering setup as on 1050718005

A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled.

Gas Setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid disabled (PG1)
leave B-side upper 15 psi He3, disabled (PG2)
fill B-main with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)

Enable the following: ECE and VUV gate valves, Z-bolo shutters

ICRF Setup: transmitters in run-on at 8:30

Plan
1. (10 shots) Start a plasma with B = 3.4 T, Ip = 0.8 MA, nl = 0.8 e20m^-2 (other parameters same as 1050718005, standard fiducial plasma shape). After determining phasing required for (0,pi,pi,0) and CD, quick current scan, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0 MA to establish some baseline shots for future low field operation.

2. (10 shots) Continue He3 puff scan - load 1050718025. B field at 5.2 T, Ip = 1.0 MA, nl04=1.0e20 m^-2. Scan He3 puff shot by shot: 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 120, 140, 160 ms (adjust field to keep mode conversion near axis).

3. (10 shots) Run constant power and compare J ant with D+E antenna (B field at 5.2 T). Start from the He3 puff time that gave the best J heating from 2. Run constant RF power, J 1.5 MW and D+E at 1.5 MW. (Program fast turn-offs for dW/dt and MC heating study).

Scan the He3 puff and generate a similar curve of He3 dependence of heating effectiveness (cf. Fig. 1 in the MP), also use the ratio of Wtot as a proper measure. We will scan the He3 puff up to a point where clear evidence of MC heating is observed.

4. (3 shots) Use the optimal gas puff, vary the antenna phase shot by shot, [0, pi, pi, 0], [0, pi/2, pi, 3/2pi] and [0, -pi/2, pi, -3/2pi], J at 1.5 MW, D+E at 1.5 MW. (B = 5.2 T)

5. (5 shots) Upper single null plasma (load shot 1050629014, lower B field to 5.2 T). Do H-mode power threshold comparison. (same RF waveform as in 1.) (Need as high power as possible from D+E > 2 MW)

6. (5 shots) Overlay all antennas to obtain total 2.5 MW RF (varying the power ratio of J and E). Run several shots near the peak performance of the J heating. (also program fast turn-offs on E and J antennas at two different time points).

7. (5 shots) density scan. Run nl 04 = 0.5, 0.7, .9, 1.1, 1.3 e20 m^-2. Adjusting the He3 puff time to keep nHe3/ne approximately constant. RF waveform same as in 3.

Run Summary:

We finished the 3He scan and found the optimum puff is ~100-120 msec.
From the break-in-slope analysis, the 3He fraction is ~5-7%. For
concentrations less than this, the heating effectiveness was poorer
compared to E antenna at similar power levels. Another observation is
that -90 phasing produces the best plasma response in heating and
neutrons. Heating phasing is similar but +90 phasing was
significantly reduced. The trips in H-mode suggest the He fraction
remains relatively constant across the H-mode transition. We will
need further analysis to confirm this observation. At high power in
H-mode, J antenna struggled and requires further experimental time to
determine if this is a limitation or conditioning issue.

The machine ran extremely well today. We had 31 plasmas, 1 dud, and
no fizzles. The only tweaks required were in the prefill gas levels
that varied somewhat early in the run and then stabilized, so that
even gas adjustments became rare.

On the other hand, we had a persistent MARFE from 300 to 500 ms that
was improved by slowing down the density rise, but not eliminated.
The MARFE also became less pronounced as the run continued, possibly
indicating dirty wall conditions. Several shots also had injections
or thrashes early in the shot (120 ms) that almost resulted in the
loss of the plasma.
