| Run 1050728, MP378, Mode conversion flow drive at 50 MHz
Purpose: Looking for evidence of plasma flow driven by mode converted ICRF waves. Special gas: He3 15 PSI, B-side Upper. Argon also enabled. Shot-by-shot plan (not exactly the same as that in the MP): +++ PART A: (11 shots) Look for MC related flow by small B field ramp Plasma: 1 MA. nl 0.9e20 m^-2, B field at 4.8 T. starts ramping down to 4.5 T from 0.7 to 1.1 sec, then ramp back up to 4.8 T from 1.1 to 1.5 sec. Gas puff: 200 ms He3 from 300 ms. Usual amount of Ar puff for HIREX. HIREX setup: HIREX spectrometer #2 poloidal view chord to be set at R = 0.61 (0.75) m. Also HIREXjr for Vtor at r/a = 0, 0.3, 0.6. A.1 Minority heating. E port at 1.5 MW. Check the baseline rotation at L-mode. (2 shots) A.2, Mode conversion heating phase 3 shots (digital phase at 315 degree), RF: 1.5 MW from J (50 MHz) from 0.7 to 1.5 sec. Two programed 10 ms notches at 0.9 sec and 1.3 sec. (The power may have to be reduced in order to stay in L-mode). A.3 Current drive phases (6 shots). 3 shots for each direction (digital phase at 230 and 50). What to look for: Above usual L-mode flow observed (> 15 km/s?) from the HIREX measurement. Signals symmetric before and after 1.1 sec in ANY HIREX measurement. Need to check FRC ECE signal to make sure that the MC layer location is at about R=0.61 m (at the middle point of field ramp). If not, I need to adjust the He3 puff length accordingly. If similar flow pattern is observed by two consecutive shots in ANY of the flow measurement and ANY of the RF configuration, GOTO Part C. If no evidence of flow is observed, GOTO Part B. +++ PART B. (24 shots) If nothing was observed in Part A B.1. Repeat the experiments in Part A with B field ramp from 5.5 to 5.8 T, Low field MC. (6 shots) B.2 Repeat Part A at 0.7 MA and 1.2 MA, 6 shots in each current (check the three antenna phases). (12 shots) B.3. Repeat the experiments in Part A at B field ramp of 4.1 to 4.4 T. Check Vtor at r/a = 0.6. Also set HIREX poloidal view to this location. (6 shots) GOTO Part C whenever flow is observed. End of the run +++ PART C: (6 shots) Further study of the flow if flow is observed in Part A or Part B. C.1. Localizaton of the flow: Run a shot with B field ramp from 5.1 T to 4.8 T then back. A shot B field ramp from 4.5 T to 4.2 T, then back up. (Others the same as the discharges with flow observed in Part A or Part C). To see if the flow is localized. (2 shots) C.2. Flow velocity vs. RF power: Repeat with a constant B field (selected from part A or C). RF ramping up from 0.2 to 1.5 MW, three times at t= [0.7, 0.9], [1.0, 1.2], and [1.3, 1.5] sec. Look for any RF correlated flow velocity. I may have to adjust B field shot by shot. (4 shots) GOTO PART B if time allows. |

| We finished Part A of the SL_plan: searching flow pattern using B field ramp-up and ramp-down with MC layer R~0.61 m.
We've got no shot that show any significant flow above the baseline level (ohmic shot 33, E minority heating shot 3, 11). There is no distinct feature of the toroidal flow at r/a~0.3 in any of the current drive phase shots (16, 18, 19, 20, 21). In some of the heating phase shots (6, 7, 13, 34), there might exist a mirror symmetry of rotation for B ramp-up and down (mirror at t = 1.1 sec). However, since the magnitude of the rotation generally did not exceed the background level, it is rather uncertain whether this pattern is just coincidence or even an illusion. More analysis is required to make conclusion. (The existence of flow is a sufficient condition for the appearance of such a pattern, but not a necessary condition.) In shot 29, 30, 31, we ran constant B field with RF ramp-up and hoped to see any flow that would scale with RF power (Part C). There was no evidence, except a rather weak hint in shot 30, of any RF power related flow. Preliminary conclusion is that there is no flow large enough to be measured by our present diagnostic. |

MP#378 MC flow drive SL: Y. Lin PO: W. Rowan C-Mod ran fairly well today. There were two basic discharges, an SNL based on 1050725015 and an innerwall-limited discharge based ultimately on shots from run 1050615. During the first part of the day, it was more difficult to puff He3 into the discharge from 300 to 500 ms although some shots ran with this puff. Hence the time was changed to 500 to 700 ms. Later in the day, we returned to puffing at the earlier time and the problems seemed to have disappeared. At the middle of the run, some attempts were made to run inner-wall limited discharges. The lower elongation version of these discharges ran but not with with He3 puffing. In retrospect, it appears that marfing may have been one cause for today's difficulties.
