MP#390 D(He3) Minority Heating Evaluation at 50 MHz
MP#417 Boronized density scan

Session leader: S. Wukitch/B. Lipschultz
Physics operator: R. Parker
------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------
Overnight boronization
use 120 psi from 10%B_2D_6/90%He bottle
scan resonance from 50 to 103 cm, dwell at 52
normal fill pressures and duty factors

follow boronization with:
4 hours He ECDC (5e-5 torr gauge)
1 hour D2 ECDC (2e-4 torr gauge)
------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------
Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00.

Power systems as on 1050629017 with modification to 5.1 T and nl04~0.8
B-side upper enabled with 110 msec puff at 0.2 sec (as on 1050802015)

A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled.

Gas Setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1)
fill B-side upper with 15 psi He3 Hybrid enabled (PG2)
fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
NINJA set to 12 PSI D2

Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters
Important Diagnostics:
Standard set, with ECE and PCI (50 MHz, with localization).

------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------
ICRF Setup: RF in run-on by 08:30, ready to go on first shot (J-port at 50 MHz)
------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------
Run Plan

1. recover antenna operation post boronization (2-10 shots):
RF starts at 0.7 seconds. Two pulses (J and E) separated by 100 ms.. Determine the optimum He3 injection. Condition up to levels beyond that needed for #2.

2. H-mode comparison discharges: separate J and E pulses up to 1.5 MW. Do this for both He 3 minority and MCEH heating. (2 shots)

3. Examine combined powers at 3 -4MW for comparison with "gold standard" of J at 78 MHz.
This will be done for both MC electron heated H-modes with minority heated H-modes depending on the results from step 2. We will do this at three different densities - nl_04 = 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 (10 shots)

Decision point: Whether to do Ohmic density scan or USN for CD discharges?

4. Return to a shot at which full SOL profiles were obtained early in the day to repeat probe SOL profile measurements to see if there are any effects (1-2 shots)

SL reserve the right to modify RF power, 3He concentration, and antenna phasings

Session Leader Summaries

We used the last shots of the day for mode conversion current drive
experiments. We loaded Tuesday's shot 1050802031, but set the toroidal
field to be flat at 5.7T (instead of the ramp) and adjusted the concentration
for on-axis mode conversion (n3He/ne ~ 20% at this field). With Zeff < 2 (fresh
boronization), this is a good target, however the E-port did not run well and we could not reach high temperatures (Te ~ 2 keV).
We did several comparisons co vs counter with 2.2 MW from J-port.

On axis
shot 30 (digital phase = 50 deg) - 32,33 (230 deg)

Near axis, HFS
34 (230 deg) - 35 (50 deg)
36 (50 deg) - 37 (230 deg)

Small loop voltages differences ~ 0.1 V were observed, but they do not offer a clear indication of current drive.
More analysis will be done to determine the changes in profiles (Te, Zeff, etc...) and their effect.

The machine performed very well for this run. The first shots were for recovering from boronization, but the discharges started up reliably from shot 1. However, there was a clear degradation in performance, as measured by stored energy, after about 10 shots. Shot 7 was notable with 164 kJ of stored energy
with 3 MW of RF.

As the run proceeded, it was necessary to gradually increase the IC_EF4 current
from 1295 A to 1325 A in order to keep the breakdown at or below 5 ms. Other than that, the startup was robust. Also, there were no disruptions during the run (sorry, Bob) and all shots ended with controlled rampdown generally to 10% or less of the programmed current.

Although the startup was robust there were two shots where an early injection caused a fizzle. This seems to be a random event and did not occur often enough to be a problem. The only dud that occured was the result of a pull-out of the OHL breaker, an event that also occured at least once last week during the 7/27 run.

Scorecard:

37 shots
4 fizzles (two due to operator error in loading a previous shot without correcting fill pressure)
1 dud (due to OHL breaker pulling)
32 full length plasma shots

Aug 17 2005 12:57:49:887PMSteve WukitchRun summary

An effort was made to compare H-mode performance using D(3He) and D(H)
by comparing with experiments in July. Clear results are not
forthcoming from the data obtained today because it appears the
machine conditioning degraded rather quickly. Shots 006 and 007 were
encouraging but the plasma performance degraded quickly thereafter.
The best experiment we can do is a direct comparison within the same
shot when all the antennas are all functioning.

Furhter, we ran the scanning probes at 0.65 s from shot 2 through 25
(with a few exceptions) to monitor changes, if any, in the SOL
profiles as the boronization wore off.

Finally, we used the last 10 shots to investigate MCCD and had some
success in obtaining good shots. Further analysis is required to
determine the amount of driven current.

Aug 4 2005 03:20:15:260PM1050804028Alexandre ParisotMCCD targets for loop voltage measurements.
USN shot similar to 150802031, but with toroidal field constant at 5.7T
Estimated helium concentration, ~ 25-30%, break-in-slope at the edge of the FRC-ECE coverage.

Next. Reduce puff duration to 100 ms, this should bring us on axis.
Go to +50 deg phasing, remove the notches in J-port.
Aug 4 2005 03:32:51:387PM1050804029Alexandre ParisotJ faulted out. Screen current too high.
Seems like we are going in and out of tiny H-modes. Zeff below 2.

Next. Repeat. Retune J-port. Lower power to 2.2 MW.
Aug 4 2005 03:38:46:683PM1050804030Alexandre ParisotGood shot. Clean RF from J-port. E has multiple faults.

Next. Repeat. Opposite phasing +230deg.

Aug 4 2005 04:01:18:933PM1050804031Alexandre ParisotGood shot. J-port faults at 1.04sec.
E has faults from 0.8 sec on, dies before 1sec.

Next. Repeat.

Aug 4 2005 04:24:44:637PM1050804033Alexandre ParisotGood shot. Repeat of 32.
Loop voltage lines up perfectly. E is still faulting.

Next. Increase puff duration to 120 ms to move slightly off axis (in case we were on the low field side). Lower power from E.
Aug 4 2005 04:37:52:653PM1050804034Alexandre ParisotGood shot. Good break-in-slope from GPC channels 1 and 2.
We are sightly off-axis on the high field side.
E and J stayed on [0.7,0.88] sec, E tripped out after 1.17sec.

Next. Repeat opposite phasing. Turn off E at 1.18sec (just in case).

Aug 4 2005 04:55:30:713PM1050804036Alexandre ParisotGood shot. E is clean, turns of at 1sec.

Next. Repeat. Opposite phasing for the last shot.

Aug 4 2005 05:15:49:683PM1050804037Alexandre ParisotGood shot. E is clean, turns of at 1sec.
Loop voltage is different again. Zeff too.
If we have an effect, it is not overwhelming, we'll have to see whether
Zeff and Te can account for the observed differences in loop voltage.

End of the run.

Physics Operator Comments
Aug 4 2005 09:15:26:930AM1050804001Ron ParkerColdstart did not run this morning.
First shot loaded from 1050629017, with B = 5.1 T, 110 ms He3 puff,
IC_EF4 = -1295.

Shot ran well, with sustained H-mode. Breakdown at 4.5 ms.

Aug 4 2005 09:34:32:917AM1050804002Ron ParkerShot 2 ran well, again a sustained H-Mode and early breakdown.

Next: Tune RCUR to keep right gap at 1.5 cm.

There will be a cell access after the next shot.
Aug 4 2005 09:55:20:197AM1050804003Ron ParkerShot 3 ran well, right gap reasonably constant at 1.5 cm.

No change for shot 4.
Aug 4 2005 09:58:00:180AM1050804004Ron ParkerShot 4 ran well, RF was intermittent.

Breakdown at 5 ms.
Aug 4 2005 10:22:23:947AM1050804005Ron ParkerShot 5 ran well. No changes.
Aug 4 2005 10:23:31:087AM1050804006Ron ParkerShot 6 ran well, RF still having some problems.

Next: Same shot with target density increased to 1e20 m-2.
Aug 4 2005 10:39:29:900AM1050804007Ron ParkerNice shot-- steady H-mode, RF improved, one dropout between 1 and 1.5 s.

Peak Wmhd = 164 kJ with 3 MW RF, neutron rate reaches 5e13.

Aug 4 2005 10:49:12:620AM1050804008Ron ParkerSimilar shot, but RF had a few more trips.

No changes for next shot.
Aug 4 2005 11:04:53:417AM1050804009Ron ParkerShots continue to run well, but RF dropping out.

For next shot, outer gap will be decreased by 2mm.
Aug 4 2005 11:15:43:243AM1050804010Ron ParkerFizzle! OK, so we're not perfect.

Reload same shot.
Aug 4 2005 11:31:02:930AM1050804011Ron ParkerThe shot is back. Fewer RF trips.

Next: Right gap is too large early in shot, try to keep it
more constant on next shot.
Aug 4 2005 11:53:06:980AM1050804012Ron ParkerNo plasma -- OH2L breaker pulled during charge.

This also happened during a shot on 1050727.
Probably misses a gate pulse and controller pulls breaker.

Next: Retry shot.
Aug 4 2005 12:04:59:107PM1050804013Ron ParkerShot 13 ran well, sustained H-mode, few RF trips.

Next: Try to stabilize outer gap when RF turns on.

He3 Puff increased to 120 ms (from 110 ms).
Aug 4 2005 12:14:22:840PM1050804014Ron ParkerShot ran OK, but RF tripped out.
A little more fine tuning on outer gap, but no other
changes for next shot.
Aug 4 2005 12:28:38:760PM1050804015Ron ParkerGood shot, RF stayed on although power drooped a bit.

Stored energy somewhat lower than earlier shots, e.g., 7&8.

No changes for next shot.
Aug 4 2005 12:40:37:810PM1050804016Ron ParkerShot 16 ran well, no H-Mode until end of RF pulse.

Next: No changes.
Aug 4 2005 12:54:25:510PM1050804017Ron ParkerShot 17 ran well.

For next shot we'll begin moving outer strike point lower by
moving RXL inward by 0.5 cm.
Aug 4 2005 01:10:25:107PM1050804018Ron ParkerShot 18 ran well, RXL moved 0.5 cm inside.

Next: Move RXL an additional 0.5 cm inside.
Aug 4 2005 01:23:29:823PM1050804019Ron ParkerShot 19 ran well, RF tripping on E port.
Aug 4 2005 01:30:47:260PM1050804020Ron ParkerShot 20 ran well, RF from E-port tripping.

Next: Stack RF pulses and begin density scan.
Aug 4 2005 01:45:46:917PM1050804021Ron ParkerRF pulses were stacked, shot ran OK.
Low stored energy for this much power (4 MW).

Next: Turn off E-port RF
Aug 4 2005 02:03:53:573PM1050804022Ron ParkerShot 22 was OK, but J-Port was intermittent.

Next: RXL back to where it was on shot 16 (~1 cm to the outside
compared to where it was on last shot.
Aug 4 2005 02:09:08:497PM1050804023Ron ParkerShot 23 ran well, RF still breaking up.

Next: Target density reduced from 1.0 to 0.8e20 m-2.
Aug 4 2005 02:15:20:543PM1050804024Ron ParkerAnother fizzle, due to early injections.
Try again.
Aug 4 2005 02:37:02:777PM1050804025Ron ParkerOK, shot 25 recovered and was normal as far as machine is concerned.

Next We'll load shot 1050802032 but will keep the field
constant at the level of 5.7 T. He3 Pulse will be kept at
150 ms.
Aug 4 2005 02:45:43:980PM1050804026Ron ParkerShot 26 fizzled, probably because the error fields on
shot 1050802032 were not optimal. We'll load fields
from 1050804017 and try again.
Aug 4 2005 02:56:17:917PM1050804027Ron ParkerAnother fizzle, this time the fill pressure was far too high from
the 1050802032 shot. Should be OK for the next shot.
Aug 4 2005 03:17:41:793PM1050804028Ron ParkerShot 28 ran OK. Breakdown ~ 5ms.

Aug 4 2005 03:34:35:653PM1050804029Ron ParkerShot 29 ran as programmed.

No change for next shot.
Aug 4 2005 03:40:44:903PM1050804030Ron ParkerShot 30 ran OK.

Next: Repeat, change phasing.
Aug 4 2005 03:52:31:793PM1050804031Ron ParkerShot 31 ran OK, RF intermittent.

Next: Continue with same shot -- hope for better RF pulse.
Aug 4 2005 04:03:52:107PM1050804032Ron ParkerShot 32 ran well. E-port RF continues to trip, but J-port
is OK. Continue with same shot.
Aug 4 2005 04:23:34:793PM1050804033Ron ParkerShots continue to roll. Breakdown at 5 ms.

Next: Increase He3 puff from 100 to 120 ms and
try to get E-Port to stay on.
Aug 4 2005 04:33:00:620PM1050804034Ron ParkerGood shot, similar to the last several shots.
Aug 4 2005 04:39:06:903PM1050804035Ron ParkerShots repeating reliably, robust startup.
Aug 4 2005 05:05:02:137PM1050804037Ron ParkerShot 37, the last shot for this run, ran well as programmed.
