CNPA piggyback+ possible 2-3 shots:

During the day, fire DNB at 50keV with ~6A at t=1s. Hopefully we will catch a useable calibration shot during a fizzle or dud. The pressure has to be lower than ~30e-6torr.

If we don't get this during the day, start with ~20e-6torr puff and fire the beam; adjust puff accordingly to get the optimal signal.

Enable VUV, ECE gate valves, Zbolo shutter (assuming no vacuum problems)
Allow DNB gate valve permissive on request of DNB operator

Torvac setup: TMP2 gate valve open, TMP1 shut (assuming the pump is still broken)

RF Setup: All four transmitters in RUN-ON by 8:30

Plan: We'll start the day with the RF runs, following the sequence specified
in the SL_PLAN. Initial segment 2 from 1051104026. Find an upper single null
case and load it into seg 3 (and do the magnetics observer recalculation)
in case we need it to keep out of H-mode in step 2; a possible candidate is
1050629014 (with Ip reduced from 1.05 to 1.0MA).

Aside from tweaking the startup and the target plasma, the main Physop
activity will come under step #4 (scan outer gap).

The CNPA gate valve should be open and the beam firing during the day so
Vincent can look at targets of opportunity, i.e. fizzles and
duds. If by 4:00PM Vincent has not gotten the conditions he's looking for
we will take 2 or three dedicated beam-into-gas shots with TF field only.

We will monitor the OH coax resistance and dissipation during the day
particularly after fizzles. If we get an alarm (>2.5uOhm) after the first
fizzle (or after the first shot of the day, since the last shot from last
week was a fizzle) then we will set up for a reverse-bridge oh and tf shot
after subsequent fizzles. The engineering setup for these shots should be the
same as 1051110023 (PLC control), except set the currents to 15kA instead of
10kA. If we get record high resistances (3.4 uOhms or higher) we will
need to stop the run and re-evaluate the situation (per Irby).

Run Summary

After a rough start, J antenna reached 3 MW into L-mode. Using a gap
scan, we attempted to find a condition where the loading behavior
indicated sheath loading. For gaps 0.5, 1., and 1.5 cm, no
significant sheath loading was found or variation on the video
monitor. We began H-mode threshold comparison but D antenna had
degenerated to be unusable. We will recondition in vacuum before
starting tomorrow. Earlier today D and E ran at 2 MW level before
having problems at higher power and was unable to recover.

The machine ran pretty well today, and the RF got part
of the program done. Unfortunately the CNPA electronics
had an oscillation problem that forced cancellation of
that part of the run plan.

For the first half of the day, FMIT#3
was having high voltage faults during C-Mod pulses. This
behavior had been seen the last time J3 was run, and the cause
not determined. Today the problem finally stopped after some additional
instrumentation was installed in the control circuitry to try
to identify the fault. The source of the fault was never found,
despite a lot of power room (and one cell) accesses that cost us
a number of shots.

Once J started running it came up to power fairly rapidly,
although at 3MW it always had at least one or two trips. E
ran clean most of the day, but D is still problematic.

There were no changes to the target until shot#24 when the field
was changed from 5.4 to 5.2T. The outer gap scan was carried out
shots#24-26, going from the initial 1.5cm to 1.0 to 0.5cm. No
obvious changes in loading, performance, or anything else were
observed during the scan. Shots#27-28 were back at 1.0cm gap,
with RF power ramps. The JANT camera view showed an interaction
near the midplane on the side tiles on the H-port side of the
antenna that correlated with J antenna being on. It didn't seem
to be sparking or spewing, just lighting up. No interaction on the
septa or current straps was visible.

Startup was not bad, with one string of 3 fizzles in a row (#13-15)
and one isolated fizzle on #19. Only a few shots had runaways.
I made a few minor tweaks to fields and pre-puff, which probably
didn't actually make much difference. There were a couple of late
breakdowns that went anyway. Aside from the fizzles there was one
ack failure/network glitch on shot#8 which resulted in no power supplies,
followed by two no-power cycles on 9 and 10, until the computer
guys rebooted some cPCI host computers. Apparently all of this
was fallout from someone improperly connecting to a network switch
across the street.

The good news was that the OH2U coax resistance was well-behaved all
day, not getting close to alarm levels even on the three successive
fizzles. The maximum reading at t=0 was ~2.0uOhm. We therefore did not
need to use the reverse bridge pulse trick.

There was a mysterious occurrence at the beginning of the run when the
spectroscopists noted the presence of large amounts of neon in
the discharge, despite the fact that B-side lower was disabled. The
B-top and C-side plena were purged and refilled with D2 before shot#3
and the neon dropped dramatically, and then decreased down to normal
levels over the next several shots. Apparently there had been some
cross-contamination when the plena were filled in the morning.

D antenna appears to have a problem around 1.15 MW with E at 1 MW (006
and 007). The condition appears to have degraded because by 017 D did
not run at 0.8 MW with E antenna.

Vincent has discovered there is a problem in his electronics
this morning. Therefore, unless it is magically healed during
the day, the MP#389 CNPA portion of today's run will not be
attempted today.

Nov 16 2005 09:26:44:670AM1051116001Steve Wolfe
Shot#1: Beam will be firing; no accommodation made in gas puff
for first shot.
plasma into rampdown, no (or few runaways)
Multiple H-modes after 1sec
Startup looks ok, bd about 6msec
Not much from J, 1MW each (staggered with some overlap)
from D&E.
H/D about.05 before RF, rising to .09 or so.

RF power room access to do something to J

Nov 16 2005 09:53:17:940AM1051116002Steve Wolfe
Shot#2: No PCS changes, RF changed a lightbulb.
plasma to rampdown, J3 faulted at commutation again.
More h-modes.
Very late breakdown, around 12msec.
Bz looks too negative.

next shot: ef4 more positive by 10A

Nov 16 2005 10:28:25:113AM1051116003Steve Wolfe
Shot#3:ic_ef4u from -1340 to -1330
Matt and Alex are reporting a lot of
Neon and argon in the plasma on shot#1 and 2, despite
the fact that B-side lower is not being fired. Therefore,
purge the C-side and B-top and refill with D2.
Note B-top is now reading 6.85psi vs 6.2, so may be 10%
higher on gas this time.
INIT after 23minutes.

plasma full length. breakdown back at 6msec.
Bz still looks too negative. pressure is actually down a bit.
FMIT#3 trips again, despite being switched into
dummy load this shot. RF in power room again.

Alex reports neon is down to levels like when we are
puffing; since we aren't puffing from B-side lower,
this may either mean there was still some in the line,
or bside-lower piezo may be leaking. Take one more shot
to see if it comes down again, then try purging bside-lower.

H/D between .08 and .12.
Next shot: no changes

Nov 16 2005 11:14:05:003AM1051116004Steve Wolfe
shot#4: No pcs changes. Andy has put the capacitor strip
across the DC break on J3; turns out it wasn't there before.
However, that is not going to make any non-RF noise pickup better.

plasma full length, RF music again (j3 into dummy again).
Still getting Hmodes with D&E, first one with D alone at 1MW
startup looks ok. No runaways. P0 down to .06.
Looks like the beginning of a hesitation, Bz still looks
negative.

Alex reports neon is down about 40% or so.
Next shot: no changes

plasma full length. Breakdown back to 6msec, looks
like one possible bounce but no runaways.
J into dummy load again, still faulting.
Steve says this one is different.
H/D still around 8-12%.
Next shot: No pcs changes.

plasma full length.
No RF music this time; it won't misbehave if you're watching it!
Early breakdown, still looks like a bounce at ~12msec,
but no runaways.
Shorter H-mode this time.

Next: No pcs changes. RF group is going to instrument #4

need to back down pg4 again.
fizzle. should have dropped the gas. Breakdown was back
at 6msec. Bz may be a bit positive.

next shot: EF4 more negative by 5A, pg4 back to 30ms

Nov 16 2005 01:53:01:910PM1051116014Steve Wolfe
shot#14: EF4 -1320 to -1325, pg4 from 32 to 30ms
Another fizzle. Early breakdown ~5ms, hesitates,
then tries to recover, then loses it.

next shot: Drop ef4 another 10A

Nov 16 2005 02:11:18:440PM1051116015Steve Wolfe
shot#15: EF4 -1325 to -1335
P0=1.2e-6 at check
Another fizzle.Extremely late breakdown ~17msec!
Never had a chance, but why?

Next shot:Br0 to -.0003

Nov 16 2005 02:19:36:567PM1051116016Steve Wolfe
shot#16:Br0 to -.0003
plasma to 1.67sec, runaways early (1e13)
breakdown at 5.8msec, maybe bouncy
D ran with a few faults at 0.5MW, E had the problems this time
J is unhappy at 3MW, lots of trips

next shot: no pcs changes

Nov 16 2005 02:31:08:410PM1051116017Steve Wolfe
shot#17:no pcs changes
plasma full length
runaways down, heating up.
breakdown a little later, around 6msec

next shot: no changes

Nov 16 2005 02:44:27:067PM1051116018Steve Wolfe
shot#18:no pcs changes
plasma full length
late breakdown 10msec, and a bounce. No runaways though
Fields look the same as 17. No ideal which way to tweak
anything, try raising pg4
J still looks unhappy.

next shot: pg4 to 32msec

Nov 16 2005 02:54:47:880PM1051116019Steve Wolfe
shot#19: pg4 from 30 to 32msec
fizzle. I guess I shouldn't have tweaked the gas either.
Next shot: pg4 back to 30msec

Nov 16 2005 03:10:14:520PM1051116020Steve Wolfe
shot#20: pg4 from 32 to 30msec
plasma full length. some bounciness in startup,
but no runaways to speak of. RF still not very
steady, except for E at 1.1MW.

next shot: drop pg4 another 2msec

Nov 16 2005 03:23:24:770PM1051116021Steve Wolfe
shot#21: pg4 from 30 to 28 msec
plasma full length
late breakdown 11msec; no runaways
one hmode during J pulse at 3MW

next: no changes, see if the bd time comes back

Nov 16 2005 03:35:54:067PM1051116022Steve Wolfe
shot#22:no changes, see if the bd time comes back
plasma full length; bd back to 6msec, slight hesitation
no runaways.
two short h-modes during J at 3MW

next shot: pg4 to 27msec

Nov 16 2005 03:50:12:973PM1051116023Steve Wolfe
shot#23: pg4 from 28 to 27msec
plasma full length.
bd at 9msec; big bounce at 20msec, runaways 10^13

next: go to 5.2T (144.4kA). pg4 back to 28msec

Nov 16 2005 04:04:53:597PM1051116024Steve Wolfe
shot#24: pg4 from 27 to 28msec
TF in seg2 to 144.4kA (5.2T)
plasma full length
bd at 5.5msec, no runaways,
faulting on all antennas, brief h-modes

next: outer gap smaller by 5mm

Nov 16 2005 04:16:47:003PM1051116025Steve Wolfe
shot#25:rcur from .6595 to .6620 (reduce outer gap 5mm)
plasma full length, bd at 6ms, no bounce, no hards
Outer gap is 1cm (compare 1.5 on #1-24)
some h-modes with each antenna.

next shot: go to .5cm outer gap

Nov 16 2005 04:33:41:880PM1051116026Steve Wolfe
shot#26:rcur from .6620 to .6645 (reduce outer gap another 5mm)
plasma full length, nice looking startup, slight hesitation.
more neuts from J than from D,E; D faulted. outer gap at 5mm
2 short hmodes during J, none for E (of course it's half the power)
No obvious effect of the small gap

next: back to 1cm gap, RF will ramp power

Nov 16 2005 04:44:38:130PM1051116027Steve Wolfe
shot#27:rcur from .6645 to .6620 (increase outer gap 5mm)
plasma full length, startup ok
gap back to 1cm
D faulting repeatedly, E a clean ramp to 1.15MW
J ramps to 2.3 with some faulting

next: repeat

shot#28: repeat
plasma full length.
bd at 6.5msec, no runaways
TCI loses fringes at 1.55sec
J and E have clean ramps(to 1.75 and 1.3MW respectively),
D faults early
