MP#348a Boron injector experiments

We will have several goals today:

1. Make sure the power supplies are ok.
2. Use the boron injector to see if decent signals can be obtained in L-mode with the Inner wall CXRS by GPI measurement (SL - BLip)
3. Condition up the ICRF (MP#355 - SL Wukitch)
4. Check out the diborane pufff suring a shot by puffing He
We hope to all get along ok.

Step 1:
1st shot ef3 power supply test
2nd shot 50 kA TF only test, PLC control, 3 s flattop
3rd shot 150 kA TF only test, PLC control 2 s flattop

may need a 4th shot at 175 kA, but will look at 2 and 3 before we decide

Step 2: Set up a 1 MA , nl04 ~ 1. shot like 1051129011 with inner and outer gaps ~ 1.3-1.5 cm. Bring the GPI puff with D2 up and make sure the measurement works (2-4 shots). Set up the RF for 1-1.5 s

Step 3: If step 2 is successful and the shot programming is ready switch to USN (e.g. shot 1051118022). Take data for several shots.

Step 4: If successful move on to SSEP sweep from -5 mm to + 5 mm (1050408026 with larger gaps and slightly higher density. (2-4 shots)

Step 5: Do the He puffing tests.

Step 6: Vary density for the LSN case from 0.8 to 1.2 in steps of 0.2

Overnight ECDC in D2, and bake at 60 C.

Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00

The run will begin with a series of power system tests:
1) EF3 PLC control test
2) TF 50kA TF-only, PLC control, 3sec flattop
3) TF 150kA TF-only, PLC control, 2sec flattop
4) TF 175kA TF-only, PLC control, 1.5sec flattop (optional)

Following these test pulses:
 Power systems as on 1051129011
Except:
Fizzle delay on OH1 and OH2's=300msec, Fizzle delay on TF=2500ms
   TF Invert time at 3.8sec

A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled.

Gas Setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar + 2psi Neon Hybrid Enabled (PG1)
leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2)
fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
fill NINJA 12psi D2
Diborane system (Helium bottle installed), Hybrid DISABLED (output_19)
Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, Zbolo shutter

Torvac setup: Gate valves open

ICRF: All four transmitters in RUN-ON by 08:30.

Run plan: Start from seg2 of 1051129011, with (D)PCS changes as follows:
  Re-program TF for back porch.
  Verify dpcs_fizzle source_shot=1060308026
Set up output_19 puff (diborane piezo) (see SL for waveform)
  Load seg3 from 1051118022, raise field from 5.2->5.4, program backporch;
    Recalculate magnetics predictors on seg3
Load seg4 from 1050408026? for SSEP sweep. Modify gaps,nl04,tf

Start from (slightly re-programmed) 1051120011
  1MA, nl04=1.0, Inner gap=1.3:1.5cm
Take 2-3 shots to set up the NINJA puff for CXRS measurement and probes
3-5 shots to get the B shaker up and going
 then
2-4 shots for He puff from diborane system
Switch to USN L-mode shot (seg3)
2 shots with SSEP sweep (seg4?)
  2 shots in USN
If time remains, do a density scan as directed by SL

I will need to run using the beta test version of PCS_3, in order to
program the diborane piezo.

MP#348a Boron injector experiments

The engineers did fix EF3. This took most of the day.

When starting back up we had problems with a breaker (see physop summary).

Around 3:30 we got real shots. Successful in initial steps in the remaining time:

We got plenty of signal using the inner wall GPI puff CXRS to measure the BV CXRS line just inside the separatrix (0-6mm). This was using the Kaiser spectrometer system. When B dust was injected the BV signal went up by ~ factor of 2 indicating that the core B density went up a similar factor.

We never got to USN and the SSEP sweep. Nor did we get to the testing of the diborane puff system.

The boron injector was brought back into operation today. Boron is clearly seen on the wide 2 camera on shot 12 starting around 1 s and shot 13 starting around 0.5 s (change in injector timing).

We took two plc controlled TF only shots to check out the #49 bottom joint:

1060314002 50 kA, 3 s flattop 2.06 u @ 2 s
1060314003 150 kA, 2 s flattop 1.89 u @ 2 s

These values have not changed a significant amount over the last week:

106030710 at 50 kA was 2.2 u
106030711 at 150 kA was 1.93 u

After letting the machine warm up over the weekend to -25 C we found that the TF scanner value of the #49 resistance had dropped back to its nominal value. It was low yesterday during a scanner test, and continued to be low until shot 6 today. Then it went back up to the 9 or 10 u level (after several no power tests). We are currently checking out the scanner to see if this effect is instrumental. Switching cables around so that the questionable signal was sent through a different set of isolation relays resulted in a normal signal again. We have put the connectors back in their original configuration for the 1060315 run and will see if the reading returns to a high value.

Most of the day was taken up with power systems work.
The TF tests in the morning went fine, and to start with
the TF scanner did not show a high reading on turn#49. The
high value came back during testing for the EF3, and it is now
believed that these readings are spurious.

The problem with the EF3 breaker pulling out at the beginning
of pulse took most of the day to solve. It was finally determined
that there was a bad contact on a multipole switch in the control
cabinet that was causing the input to the phase rotation relay
to be missing one phase. This was fixed by shot#8, around 2PM.

However, when we started to go for plasma on shot#9 we had a problem
with TF breaker#1. Not only did the breaker fail, but it smoked the
contactor switch in the control room, which also had to be replaced.
This took until after 3:30PM before we actually got shot#9, which was
a successful plasma.

Once we got going we had some success with the run, making it through
step 2 of Bruce's run plan. The gaps needed some adjustment, which was
accomplished by shot 11. Brian exercised his probes, the NINJA puff
was set up, and Jim sprinkled boron from the salt shaker. The ICRF
got some H-modes with D&E, but J3 was still problematic and will require
repair of the stub tuner.

Bruce decided to go on to USN for shot 14, but we ended up with a fizzle
and a dud. The programming is there in segment 3 (with NL04 reduced to
0.8e20, as requested by SL and ICRF). The SSEP programmed shot is in
segment 4, and still has NL04 set to 1e20. All of these have backporches
on the TF. Check with Irby before removing these, but he'll probably
agree.

Note to next Physop: In order to do the diborane puff, it will be necessary
to use the Beta version of PCS in /usr/local/cmod/codes/pcs3-Beta/pcs

Mar 14 2006 09:15:30:053AM1060314001Jim IrbyEF3 test

On Monday the EF3 breaker was replaced after finding a sheared bolt. However, looks like we have another problem:

Breaker pulled just as we went into pulse --- same problem as on Friday

Will do TF tests before we open up to work on EF3 supply

TF scanner data looks very good. The coils were warmed up to -25C over the weekend. #49 now back down to normal.
Mar 14 2006 09:38:07:617AM1060314002Jim IrbyThis shot should be a PLC control 50 kA TF test with a 3 s flattop.

Nice 50 kA pulse with long flattop - #49 resistance 2.05 u, lower that last Friday

Mar 14 2006 03:50:47:663PM1060314009Bruce LipschultzFirst shot of the day! 3:45 PM.

1 MA plasma, nl04 ~ 1.

Inner gap a little too large. But otherwise a very good shot.

Next shot aim for NINJA puff of D2 from inner all coming in around 0.7s. Hold off on B dust for now.
Mar 14 2006 03:56:07:677PM1060314009Jim IrbyTry for plasma

Willy has shifted tap #49 cables over to tap #67 inputs. Hope to see if we have a problem with the input relays. Taps around #67 are now disconnected.

Plasma!!

See what looks like boron at c-hor on the wide 2 camera. Could be material I put in during the test yesterday. No boron injector pulses were programmed for this shot.

Did not see a problem with #49 on the scanner at its new position. 50 kA backporch resistance 1.96 u

Begin setting up PCS3 for today's run
Check on setup of 1051118022, potential USN. Active seg is 3
Check on setup of 1050408026, potential SSEP sweep. Active seg is 4;
needs magnetics recalc, but baseline sub is ok
Load from 1060310024 (for startup, maybe)
Import seg2 from 1051129011. Note that the source widget didn't update; bug.
Add back porch to TF waveform V_12 (from seg1)
  There is a 50msec PG1 puff-leave it there
  Eliminate 100ms pg2 puff
Don't know what we want for diborane puff yet, so leave it alone.
  Build seg
Import seg3 from 1051118022 seg 3
  Change TF to 150ka backporch
  leave 40ms pg2 puff there
Note that there is no SSEP program in this seg
Note there is a B21_PROJ wire on wire 9.
Import seg4 from 1050408026 seg 4
Needs magnetics predictors be recalculated; Do it.
Notice that second SSEP wire on 12 has 3000 offset. It isn't used though.
Copy 150kA TF backporch waveform to V_12
  Copy 40ms PG1 puff from seg3
  Eliminate pg2 puff
  Zero Acoil current on V_10
  Copy wire 9 from B21_PROJ in seg2
  Copy NL04 program from seg2
The CLEARIN program in this segment is strange. It has a linear
sweep from -.01 to -.03; probably a hack to accommodate
the change from LN->UN without changing the reference xpt?
The left gap is pretty steady, from EFIT.
Bruce indicates he wants both gaps bigger. I'll add 5mm across the
board and see what we get. I don't understand how this waveform
     worked at all.
  Build_segment 3 & 4
  Check startup -
      33ms on PG4
      Br0=+.0001
      Ic_EF4U=-1335 (seems a little positive?)
Load/Clean. Timestamp error on P16; touch and reload

Note that AMHD freq (V_17) in seg2 has sweep waveform.
That's because I reloaded from the pulse file. It shouldn't
hurt anything, but it's another annoying side effect of the
way I'm doing the dpcs_ftae operation; it gets loaded by
dpcs_ftae_init into the pulse file directly during INIT.

Zero it out. While I'm at it, I would like to remove the
test waveform from wire 20, but I can't do that in the
wave-dedit widget. Need to add a ZERO and maybe an "Expression"
option to the pop-up menu.

Touch V17-32 widget for segs 3 and 4 so I don't get the Name
complaint later.

Mar 14 2006 09:05:55:647AM1060314001Steve Wolfe
Shot#1: EF3 test (PLC control)
No gas enabled on this shot.
Breaker pulled entering pulse. Still not fixed.

Proceed with TF tests before dealing with EF3.

Mar 14 2006 09:26:22:333AM1060314002Steve Wolfe
Shot#2: TF-only 50kA PLC control test
TF pulse ran ok. MB49 is at 120mV, lower than MB50.
Also, note that there is a substantial baseline offset
on #49, about +20mV, which I hadn't noticed before, but it
was in fact there last week.

Mar 14 2006 09:39:38:163AM1060314003Steve Wolfe
Shot#3: TF-only 150kA PLC control test
pulse went ok, MB#49 at 300mV~2uOhm.
It's back to being the highest resistance, but
not too bad. Scan still looks good.

TF seems ok. Why the scans were high last week
remains a mystery, but warming up over the weekend
seems to have "fixed" it.

We will now have a short break while Bill works on the
EF3 breaker interlock.

Mar 14 2006 09:55:10:630AM1060314004Steve Wolfe
Shot#4: The EF3 phase rot relay has been replaced. This will be
another EF3 test (PLC control)
Breaker pulled again at entry to pulse. Still not fixed.

Mar 14 2006 12:27:03:897PM1060314005Steve Wolfe
Shot#5: Cycle test with relay output forced, air-switch open, no excitation
To test power supply status.
Breaker stayed in, no other faults at PLC

Mar 14 2006 12:43:30:333PM1060314006Steve Wolfe
Shot#6: Yuri will remove the force during check, with excitation on.
This is expected to make the breaker open, if the relay is not
satisfied.

And that's what happened. Need to instrument the inputs to this relay.
It apparently really sees a problem.

Long delay in CHECK before going to PULSE (to ramp down excitation).
DPCS may timeout, not that it matters.

Mar 14 2006 02:00:46:070PM1060314007Steve Wolfe
Shot#7: Found a bad contact on a switch in the control rack
This will be a no-demand EF3 test with excitation on.
EF3 breaker stayed in. Looks like it may be fixed.

Next: EF3 PLC test with current

Mar 14 2006 02:02:41:880PM1060314008Steve Wolfe
Shot#8: EF3 test (PLC control)
Breaker stayed in. Got current.

Next shot: Try for plasma

Mar 14 2006 02:11:13:757PM1060314008Steve Wolfe
Shot#9: Try for plasma
We got a smell of smoke in the front of the control room before
we could take this shot. Investigating now.

Mar 14 2006 02:44:13:427PM1060314008Steve Wolfe
Before shot#9:
TF breaker #1 has failed. The control room switch
was smoked as a result. Both need to be changed out.
Estimated time between 30min and 1 hour

Mar 14 2006 03:43:46:397PM1060314009Steve Wolfe
Shot#9: Try for plasma (again)

Got an H-mode late. Some RF from all transmitters.
Startup looks fair, no bounces, maybe a little late.

next shot: Want less gap, adjust clearin

Mar 14 2006 03:49:51:617PM1060314010Steve Wolfe
Shot#10: CLEARIN reduce by 3mm
Fizzle, probably should have backed off on the gas

next shot: PG4 down by 3ms

Mar 14 2006 04:06:30:270PM1060314011Steve Wolfe
Shot#11: PG4 from 33ms to 30ms and IC_EF4 from -1335 to -1345
CLEARIN reduced by 3mm from shot 9
plasma to 1.8sec, left gap about 1.4cm.
Late breakdown, around 10ms.

Next: ef4 back to -1335

Shot#13: reduce nl04 to 0.8e20
plasma to 1.9sec. Slight hesitation in startup.

next shot: go to upper null

Mar 14 2006 04:48:50:163PM1060314014Steve Wolfe
Shot#14:  go to upper null: Seg 2 off, seg3 on;
 copy NL04 from seg2 to seg3
 pg4 from 28ms to 26ms
Fizzle. Early breakdown; looks like I didn't drop it enough?
Br0 went a little negative.

next shot: PG4 from 26 to 24ms

Mar 14 2006 04:58:43:333PM1060314015Steve Wolfe
