This will start with repeats of a shot from the previous 1/2 day run of MP#429. 1050825013: limited discharge, 0.8 MA, 5.4 T, 3.5 cm outer gap, kappa = 1.2, etc. This old shot disrupted early probably because of the strong GPI gas puff, which we hope will not be needed this time. If this goes through we will repeat with various strengths of gas puff, with and without Brian's probe. If all goes very well we may ask to change the outer gap. |

| Run Summary for 1060316 MP#409 "SOL Phase space studies" ___________________________________________________________________________________ The goal today was to take profile and flow data in 1.1 MA, 5.4 tesla ohmic discharges in LSN and USN at different densities. In particular, we were looking to see if the pressure profiles near the separatrix continue to follow an Ip^2 scaling, with a systematic variation with LSN versus USN. It was a tough day at the run. First, there was a 2-1/2 hour delay for Jim Irby to replace the CO2 laser in the TCI system. Second, a problem with cooling an E-port vertical leg (real or not) slowed the shot cycle way down. After running a few standard 0.8 MA shots, we managed to get four data points at the new conditions (1.1 MA, NL04=0.55 & 0.8 in LSN/USN). Unfortunately, the A-port scanning probe never cleaned up, despite the fact that a new molybdenum head was installed, just for this MP. On the last shot, we ran an inner-limited discharge for Stewart to capture turbulence images on the PSI-5 camera. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Quick shot log Ip=0.8MA, Bt=5.4T 1 - LSN, NL04= 0.8 ASP(+0), FSP(-5) SNE-sweep, W-Vf 2 - LSN, NL04= 0.88 ASP(+7), FSP(+4) SNE-sweep, W-Vf, ISP 3 - LSN, NL04= 0.6 ASP(+9), FSP(+4) SNE-sweep, W-Vf, ISP - target ok 4 - USN, NL04= 0.59 ASP(+3), FSP(-3) SNE-sweep, W-Vf, ISP 5 - USN, NL04= 0.59 ASP(+3), FSP(-3) SNE-sweep, W-Vf, ISP 6 - USN, NL04= 0.59 ASP(+10), FSP(+8) SNE-sweep, W-Vf, ISP - target good Ip=1.1MA, Bt=5.4T 7 - USN, Ip=1.1MA, NL04= 0.58 ASP(+8), FSP(+6) SNE-sweep, W-Vf, ISP 8 - USN, Ip=1.1MA, NL04= 0.59 ASP(+8), FSP(+4) SNE-sweep, W-Vf, ISP 9 - USN, Ip=1.1MA, NL04= 0.57 ASP(+11), FSP(+4) SNE-sweep, W-Vf, ISP - good targeting, ASP arcing. 10 - LSN, Ip=1.2MA, NL04= 0.52 ASP(+8), FSP(+4) SNE-sweep, W-Vf, ISP disrupted at 0.85 s 11 - fizzle 12 - LSN, Ip=1.1MA, NL04= 0.53 ASP(+8), FSP(+4) SNE-sweep, W-Vf, ISP 13 - LSN, Ip=1.1MA, NL04= 0.7 ASP(+8), FSP(+4) SNE-sweep, W-Vf, ISP 14 - LSN, Ip=1.1MA, NL04= 0.8 ASP(+8), FSP(+4) SNE-sweep, W-Vf, ISP ASP a bit deep. 15 - fizzle 16 - USN, Ip=1.1MA, NL04= 0.78 ASP(+11), FSP(+4) SNE-sweep, W-Vf, ISP 17 - no power 18 - inner-limited shot |

| Not a great run! It began 2 hours late due to failure of the CO2 laser, which had to be replaced. Then, problems developed with the cooling of the E left outer leg, similar to the problem that we had with the leg at C-port a few weeks ago. Cycle time degraded during the run to 20-25 minutes. Not clear if instrumental but it will have to be examined.
The run still managed to produce some data in both upper and lower null plasmas with the scanning probe. Shots 1-8 ran well, but shots 9 and 10 disrupted, possibly due to interaction with the scanning probe. Shot 11 then fizzled, not surprisingly. Shots 12-14 ran normally, shot 15 fizzled and shot 16 ran OK, the last shot for MP 409. We set up for one shot (limited) for MP 429 and after a no power shot, it ran and produced data. Scorecard: 13 useful plasma shots, 2 disruptions, 2 fizzles, 1 no power shot. |
