MP355 RF Conditioning

Overnight ECDC in D2, and bake at 60 C.

Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00

Power systems as on 1060314003 (1.0 MA fiducial, 5.4 T, USN)

A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled.

Gas Setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar + 2 psi Ne Hybrid DISABLED (PG1)
leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2)
fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
fill NINJA with 12 psi D2 Enabled

Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters

Torvac setup: Gate valves open

Important Diagnostics: magnetics, standard impurity spectroscopy

Plan: Continue machine cleanup and ICRF conditioning (including Jport)
in fiducial discharges.

Run Summary

I wish all the RF antennas worked as well as E antenna (probably will
perform poorly tomorrow). E antenna is operating up to 1.0 MW
reliably and required little conditioning to reach this level of
performance. D antenna started off well but deteriorated after shot
002 and was a struggle for the remainder of the day. We observed
similar problems last fall and we will vacuum condition before
tomorrow's run. J antenna got to 2 MW but is inconsistent and is
conditioning more slowly than operation without a screen.

The run started well. After a dud on shot 1, I raised the fill pressure a bit, and got 10 good full-length plasmas in a row. On shot 12, a capacitor shorted in the OH1 commutation bank, apparently right around t=0; the resulting change in the fields (particularly Bz) in the first 10 msec probably caused the fizzle that resulted. After about two and a half hours to fix the supply, we managed to get only 3 more plasmas, with 5 duds and a late breakdown fizzle mixed in. The evolution of the fields at breakdown may have been subtly different after the OH1 capacitor was replaced, with the Bz ramp rate slightly increased. The ICRF made some progress conditioning: E-port behaved well; J-port was coming up in power (with many trips) and D-port seemed to get worse during the day (see the session leader's summary for details).

It appears that OH1 had a problem right after t=0 (shorted capacitor); the current at 5 ms is about 200 amps more negative than on shot 11; I am happy to blame this for the fizzle.
