| Run Plan for 1060324 MP#409 "SOL Phase space studies" Overall Goal Map out the 'phase space' of the SOL plasma, i.e. the relationships between the 'transport state' (profile shapes, gradients, cross-field fluxes, advection velocities, turbulence characteristics) and theory-based 'control parameters' (local collisionality, magnetic field strengths, parallel connection length,...) that may determine that state. Today's Goals The focus today is to continue the attempt to get some data at Ip=1.1 MA and Bt=5.4 Tesla in LSN and USN equilibria. If there is time, we will also take data at Ip=0.8 MA and Bt=4.0 Tesla. First we will start out with a few 0.8 MA shots to make contact with previous data. Notes - Set integration time on Xybion to 1 ms - Connect the following fiber views for the fast diodes Outer SOL views 1-3,5,7,9-14,31-40 (total of 21) Innerwall SOL views B and C - Connect the following fiber views for the CHROMEX Outer SOL views 18-22,24-29 (total of 11) Innerwall SOL views A,D,E,F - otherwise known as 1,4-6 - Set timing on fastdiode digitizers to 0.1 s after the A-B limiter NINJA puff timing Plan Load from shot#1060316006. This shot ran on segment#3. It was a USN discharge with Ip=0.8 MA, Bt= 5.4 tesla, NL04 = 0.79e20. Note: segment#2 has a LSN program (used last time on 1060316003) that we will also use. | Run Summary for 1060324 MP#409 "SOL Phase space studies" ___________________________________________________________________________________ Goal: The goal today was to continue to gather profile and flow data in 1.1 MA, 5.4 tesla ohmic discharges in LSN and USN at different densities. In particular, we wanted to see if the pressure profiles near the separatrix follow an Ip^2 scaling, with a systematic variation with LSN versus USN - this has been seen at lower currents. Also, we desired to map-out plasma flow behavior in the SOL and core at this parameter range. Last time we attempted to collect this set of data (1060316), we were not very successful due to run delays as well as some intermittent breakdown 'arcs' on the A-port scanning probe. Since that time the A-port probe was repaired. Also, the "west" electrode on the F-port probe, which was shorting out last time, was found to be in much better shape today. Result: This was a great run. We managed to gather all the data we needed in matched LSN and USN discharges for a good range of plasma densities (NL04=0.55 to 1.7e20) at 1.1 MA plasma current. The A-port probe functioned very well, yielding density, temperature and flow information. The inner wall probe also worked well and was poked near to the separatrix all day. The only down side was that the F-port scanning probe decided not to scan at all after shot#5. The problem seems to be a bad drive transistor for the 4-way solenoid valve that sends air pressure to the pneumatic cylinder. This fix will require a maintenance day. Fortunately, we can use the A-port probe data for the key analysis, although flow information from the F-probe would have been valuable. Jim Terry got some good fast-diode data today from most all shots. John Rice also reported that he got some good central toroidal rotation data in LSN/USN. It appears that at 1.1 MA, rotation in LSN is the same as USN for the same density discharge. In both cases, the rotation is seen to be a strong function of density. The parallel flows near the separatrix (from A-port probe) also look like they are of similar magnitude in USN and LSN, although they are different farther out into the SOL. Flows on the inner wall still reverse (roughly) in LSN compared to USN. Flows near the separatrix at the outer midplane also exhibit a strong dependence on LN04 (decreasing with density), perhaps explaining John's observations. It will be interesting to compare the separatrix/core plasma flow values directly. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Quick shot log Ip=0.8MA, Bt=5.4T 1 - USN, Ip=0.8MA, NL04= 0.56 ASP(+5), FSP(0) NSEW-sweep, ISP 2 - USN, Ip=0.8MA, NL04= 0.61 ASP(+11), FSP(+9), ISP - great targeting 3 - LSN, Ip=0.8MA, NL04= 0.54 ASP(+9)too deep West probe card problem, FSP(+6), ISP 4 - fizzle 5 - LSN, Ip=0.8MA, NL04= 0.56 ASP(+8)-excellent, FSP(+7)-excellent, ISP Ip=1.1MA, Bt=5.4T 6 - USN, Ip=1.1MA, ASP(+11), FSP(+5), ISP disrupted early, lots of runaways, FSP does not seem to be accepting triggers. 7 - USN, Ip=1.1MA, NL04= 0.3 ASP(+11), FSP(+5), ISP - FSP not triggering- problem with solenoid valve drive? 8 - USN, Ip=1.1MA, ASP(+13), FSP(+5), ISP - FSP not triggering. Physics Operator summary for Friday, 24-Mar-2006
MP#409 SOL phase space
SL: LaBombard
An interesting and successful run. We got through the majority
of the SL run plan, up to NL04~1.4e20 in both upper and lower
null at 1.1MA, then went back and picked up some intermediate
points on the scan. Higher density did not seem to be accessible in the
upper null configuration due to marfiness. Brian and JR both
reported getting good (and some unexpected) data. Brian had good data
from the ASP and ISP all day. The FSP drive failed fairly early in the
run, and he wasn't able to fix it on the fly, but didn't seem too
unhappy; at least he doesn't seem to need to re-do these cases
because of the lack of FSP data.
From the physop point of view, we established that use of
static fill for breakdown is no worse than using pre-puff,
and may possibly have been helpful in avoiding duds. At least there
were no duds while using static fill (shots#5-33) and no more fizzles
than recent "usual", maybe fewer though the statistics aren't there
yet. We started off using a "normal" pg4 pre-puff (22ms) for shots 1-4,
and after we hit the first dud on shot #4 we changed over to the
static fill at 1.5e-5 target. Shot #5 ran, with the only startup
bounce of the day and substantial runaways, then shot 6 had a
startup injection and huge runaways, very like shot 1060323034.
A possibly relevant point is that for all shots after that (#7-33)
the sparker began to show increased current above its usual 200uA,
starting about the time it reached max voltage, around -.5sec.
Breakdown times with the static fill initially were slightly late,
though not as late as #1-3 with the pg4 puff, but on shot 6 and after
they were earlier, around 5ms or slightly before. Sometime around
shot 16 or so the breakdown started to creep later, and the burnout
light developed a lump, similar to what
happened yesterday, and shot 18 was a fizzle. It is probably worth
noting that at this point in the run we were running rather high
densities and getting end of shot disruptions. Shots 18-25 were
a classic fizzle/disruption/fizzle/disruption sequence. After the
disruption on #25 we lowered the fill target from 1.5e-5 to 1.3e-5 and
had successful startups the rest of the day (#26-33); to be fair
there weren't any more 1.1MA disruptions in that series either, though
there was one pre-flattop disruption on #27.
The other interesting physop point noted today is that there seems
to be a slight discrepancy between the TCI feedback signal and the
NL04 value reported by the usual trace. This resulted in the gas turning
off on several shots with low target density (5e19) even when the
nominal nl04 value was as low as 2-3e19. Irby should investigate
this effect. It may be an offset problem on the auto-zeroing circuit,
or something about the way I'm doing the baseline subtraction in
DPCS.
Generally, the machine ran well today. We are still having funny
TC readings from various TF legs; today E-left seemed to back in
the 'bad' reading barrel, but Irby ok'd bypassing it, so there were
only a few short delays for EF3 and OH cooling. There were
some disruptions, mostly in the upper null cases at high density.
Some of these were injections, and some may have been power supply
railing (current and/or voltage). Early in the day we were getting
locked modes on the low density high current cases, but then I
realized that the C-integrator gate was not turning on until
after .5sec so the B21_PROJ feedback couldn't work until then.
This was fixed at shot 14. When we went back to low density
later in the run we didn't seem to get locked modes anymore, so
that may have worked. Two shots had early runaways and one low
density case (#7) developed runaways in flattop.
There was one cell access to reseat a TC connector from the EF1L
coil, and a couple of power room accesses to check on a multiple
SCR not conducting error (spurious) and to reset things after a
crowbar following a disruption. There were also a couple of cell
accesses early for camera resetting and to check on the F-side
probe, which failed early and could not be revived today.

| Mar 24 2006 09:11:22:397AM | 1060324001 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#1: Plasma full length. late breakdown, around 9msec; Bz a little negative p0 is only .06mTorr. Plenum is only 6.0psi today, was 6.5yesterday Density rises after 1sec due to NINJA puff Brian says targeting is ok. Next shot: EF4 5A more positive |
| Mar 24 2006 09:26:52:443AM | 1060324002 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#2: EF4 from -1350 to -1345 IGT at check 9.5e-7 plasma to 1.8sec. breakdown even later, 11msec! p0=.063, Bz still too negative next shot: 10A more on EF4 |
| Mar 24 2006 09:33:56:630AM | 1060324003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#3: EF4 from -1345 to -1335 Change to seg2 for LSN case. Notice that I had a waveform on the Acoil V, get rid of it since I've loaded B21_PROJ feedback on wire9. This one has 50ms Ar puff; leave it. plasma full length. Looks lower null to me. Still a late breakdown - 9msec p0 is up to ~.065 Cell access for JT next shot: Br0 0.2mT positive |
| Mar 24 2006 09:56:05:910AM | 1060324004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#4: Br0 from 0 to +0.0002 dud. Fields look the same as on 3, can't tell that I changed Br. p0 is .063. Looks like the late breakdown finally got me. Try the static fill. |
| Mar 24 2006 10:08:08:863AM | 1060324005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#5: Static fill: Disable B-top hybrid, enable B-top fill set fill target=1.5e-5. No other changes. IGT before INIT=5.4e-7 IGT in CHECK=1.4e-5 plasma, runaways early. big bounce in startup, almost lost it, but breakdown was earlier, 6.2msec P0=.065 Torr. Next shot: Go to 1.1MA shot. |
| Mar 24 2006 10:27:14:397AM | 1060324006 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#6: Go to 1.1MA shot Import seg3 from 1060316016 Import seg2 from 1060316016 Seg 3 on seg2 off In seg3: load wire 9 from seg4 (B21_PROJ) ref to '10' NL04 from 8.5e19 to 5e19 Zero Acoil, remove PG3 puff Haven't zero'd the wire 10-12 yet, but they're off. No startup changes IGT in CHECK=1.4e-5 Horrendous runaways, early disruption at 0.5sec Big early injection at 33msec, looks a lot like Shot#34 yesterday. I don't think the runaways start until after the injection (watch out for the in-tree smoothing on \neuts_hards) Breakdown was at 5.5msec, good current rise until it gets zapped. p0=0.066mTorr Gary needs a cell access to check a TC on an EFcoil |
| Mar 24 2006 10:58:07:113AM | 1060324007 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#7: Load PCS with wires10-12 zero'd, seg2 set up for B21_PROJ. No real changes from 6, still in seg3 trying for 1.1MA USN. Time in recool=26minutes ITG before INIT=5.0e-7 ITG at CHECK=1.4e-5 plasma to 1.65sec, runaways after 0.5sec Got nl04=3e19 instead of 5e19, maybe it needs a little maintenance gas after all. Looks like a locked mode at 1.2sec, maybe earlier as well fsp didn't fire. Brian is checking in the cell. |
| Mar 24 2006 11:20:07:333AM | 1060324008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#8: Put some maint pg3 in seg3 F-probe drive is apparently dead. Will continue without it. ITG before INIT=7.1e-7 ITG in CHECK=1.5e-5 Early disruption at 0.6sec, density came way down again. Feedback thinks the density is too high, but it is less than drawn waveform. Actually it isn't early. |
| Mar 24 2006 11:33:07:380AM | 1060324009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: Redraw nl04 to 6e19 Increase maint level to 25V Disruption, later this time 1.35sec Gas is still getting turned off before .45 sec Maybe the gain is too high? Startup looks good (now I've jinxed it!) No runaways this time. Not obvious why it disrupted. next: raise nl04 to 8e19 |
| Mar 24 2006 11:49:15:723AM | 1060324010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10: Raise nl04 to 8e19, leave pg3 alone. No startup changes. ITG into INIT=8.7e-7 ITG in CHECK=1.5e-5 plasma to 1.68sec, nl04=0.7e20 no runaways. Ef1L rails late, probably not a problem I think we're getting a locked mode at 0.45sec or so, when the density does its early drop. |
| Mar 24 2006 12:04:07:550PM | 1060324011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11: Increase early seg3 PG3 program to try to prevent the density drop. Decrease early nl04 gain. Maybe I shouldn't have asked for 30psi instead of 40psi in the b-main plenum? Increase Ar puff from 40->50ms ITG pre-INIT=7.9e-7 ITG in CHECK=1.5e-5 plasma full length, density is still only 7e19 before NINJA puff but I don't think we had a locked mode this time. P0=.07mTorr, startup looks good Next: Go to lower null at this density |
| Mar 24 2006 12:28:50:897PM | 1060324012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: Go to lower null at this density Copy NL04 and PG3 waveforms to seg2, load gains for nl04 from seg3 to seg2 Seg3 off/Seg2 on. plasma full length, no runaways, startup ok, bd at 4.9ms may be getting too early nl04=7.8e19 before NINJA puff. No locked mode, I don't think, but the sawteeth get smaller around 1.1sec during the NINJA puff next: re-do this one with NL04 program to 7e19 |
| Mar 24 2006 12:33:27:177PM | 1060324013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13:re-do 12 but with NL04 program to 7e19 plasma full length (1.78sec), nl04 still around 7.5e19 and gas is off after .45sec; walls are loading up. Injection at 0.92sec Next: drop nl04 to 0.5e20 |
| Mar 24 2006 12:52:00:130PM | 1060324014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14:drop nl04 to 0.5e20 Notice that the Integrator C gate isn't on until 0.5sec; move the start to .21sec in seg2 so the B21_Proj control is effective earlier (was only seeing the P gain until then) Make the same change in seg3 for when we go back to it. ITG pre-INIT=1.0e-6 plasma to 1.86sec NL04=6e19 until NINJA; gas is off after 0.2sec. If Brian wants it lower he should install the cryopump (or wait for a couple of shots). Acoil turns on when it should. next shot: repeat, see if density is lower |
| Mar 24 2006 01:06:23:143PM | 1060324015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15:repeat, see if density is lower plasma full length. nl04=6.5e19 next: nl04 to 1.1e20 |
| Mar 24 2006 01:22:28:473PM | 1060324016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: nl04 to 1.1e20, still lower null plasma to 1.7sec, nl04=1.0 to 1.1e20 next: go to upper null at this density |
| Mar 24 2006 01:35:11:113PM | 1060324017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17: go to upper null at this density copy nl04 trace from seg2 to seg3. seg2 off/seg3 on Change segment titles to read "1.1MA ..." instead of "0.8MA..." plasma to 1.75sec. nl04=1.0e20 breakdown a little later,5.6ms, and starting to get a little bit of a lump in the burnout curve. CIII is growing some too, now up to 0.01 EF1L is railing at about 1.3sec next: raise NL04 to 1.4e20 |
| Mar 24 2006 01:44:05:100PM | 1060324018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: raise NL04 to 1.4e20 and raise pg3 to ~50V Increase OH1, OH2 current limits to 30kA (from 26 and 27) Leave startup alone, although it looks like it may be trending toward a fizzle. Fizzle. I called it, now I have to figure out what to do about it. |
| Mar 24 2006 02:03:41:260PM | 1060324019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: Let's pretend it's fields. Drop Br0 from .0002 to 0 and IC_EF4 from -1335 to -1345. I don't expect this to help, but we'll give it a try before dropping the fill. raise NL04 to 1.4e20 and raise pg3 to ~50V Increase OH1, OH2 current limits to 30kA (from 26 and 27) Plasma to 1.52sec. Maybe it really was fields. Or waiting. Breakdown is back before 5ms and lump is gone. Big marfe during the first half-second. nl04 not exactly flat, but close to target. OH1 and EF1L are railing by the end of shot. Could increase the OH1 limit if we're going to raise NL. next shot: try to flatten out the density at 1.4-1.5 |
| Mar 24 2006 02:14:34:700PM | 1060324020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: Increase seg3 pg3 to 70V thru 1sec to try to get density up faster again, after marfe Increase OH1 limit to 35kA to eliminate late rail. Another fizzle. Seems just like yesterday. breakdown at 5.8msec, slow burnout. Could be the disruption too. Just go again, no startup changes. |
| Mar 24 2006 02:27:50:010PM | 1060324021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: no startup changes, still trying for 1.4e20 earlier in pulse. plasma to 1.52sec again, very similar to 19 except the marfe lasts longer. breakdown at 5.8msec, no lump. next shot: back to lower null 1.4e20 |
| Mar 24 2006 02:45:09:433PM | 1060324022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: back to lower null 1.4e20 Copy nl04 and pg3 traces from seg3 to seg2 seg3 off/seg2 on IC_ef4 from -1345 to -1350 IGT pre-INIT=1.3e-6 Fizzle. Bd at 5ms, CIII up to .012W/cm2/sr. Very little current. Should go next time. If it doesn't, then drop the fill to 1.3e-5 |
| Mar 24 2006 02:59:26:793PM | 1060324023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: No changes looking for lower null 1.4e20 plasma disrupts at 1.25s; Marfing throughout Ended up at 1.7e20, I don't need the extra pg3 with lower null. Gas was mostly off after 0.48sec anyway. EF1U is already railed at 0.9sec. Also getting a big thrash at Ip gain switch at .65sec. Breakdown was late 7.1ms |
| Mar 24 2006 03:13:34:560PM | 1060324024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24: Slow down nl04 rise, reduce early pg3 in seg2 No startup changes, expect a fizzle. and got one. Breakdown's back at 5.9ms though; almost made it. next: try again. If we get another disruption, then drop the fill for the following shot. Neuts/hards signal is showing noise spikes at 2e12 level at late times, out to 1.3sec. Power supply pickup? I don't see it on the dpcs input_84; maybe it's just on the camac? |
| Mar 24 2006 03:25:57:730PM | 1060324025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: No change to previous setup- Slow down nl04 rise, reduce early pg3 in seg2 plasma to 1.42sec. marfe much reduced, 1.35e20 lumpy startup, hesitated and almost fizzled again. next shot: repeat |
| Mar 24 2006 03:35:05:637PM | 1060324026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: Drop fill to 1.3e-5 from 1.5e-5 try to avoid the post- disruption fizzle. Otherwise, repeat. plasma to 1.68sec. nl04=1.35e20 breakdown at 5.0msec, maybe still a little slower P0=.061mTorr, no lumps. next: nl04=0.9e20 lower null |
| Mar 24 2006 03:49:54:073PM | 1060324027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#27:nl04=0.9e20 lower null. No startup changes. plasma to 0.35sec. Breaker pulled after the disruption. Looks like an injection starting at 0.337sec, shortly after crossover. next: try again. |
| Mar 24 2006 03:59:13:713PM | 1060324028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#28:nl04=0.9e20 lower null. No startup changes. plasma to 1.75sec. NL04=0.9e20 as requested. next: same density, upper null |
| Mar 24 2006 04:15:28:027PM | 1060324029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#29: Copy nl04, pg3 from seg2 to seg3 seg2 off/seg3 on plasma to 1.84sec. nl04=.85e20 until injection at 1.25sec next shot: try again to get 0.5e20 in USN |
| Mar 24 2006 04:31:25:543PM | 1060324030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#30:try again to get 0.5e20 in USN plasma full length, density down to 5.7e19 at last scan. next shot: repeat and see if it drops on down |
| Mar 24 2006 04:41:16:903PM | 1060324031 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#31:repeat and see if it drops on down plasma full length, nl04 down to 3e19. next shot: lower null aim for 0.5e20 |
| Mar 24 2006 04:55:48:777PM | 1060324032 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#32: lower null aim for 0.5e20 seg3 off/seg2 on plasma full length. nl04 = 5.5e19. next: repeat and re-target probe |
| Mar 24 2006 05:12:15:857PM | 1060324033 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#33: raise target nl04 to 7e19; there seems to be a discrepancy between the feedback signal and the nl04 analyzed value, and the feedback is claiming density is too high and turning off the valve. That's why it dropped below the program on shot 31, I think. plasma to 1.8sec. nl04=6.2e19. Feedback still think's the density is too high by up to 1e19. There is something funny with the tci feedback signal, possibly an offset or non-linearity. |
