MP355 RF Conditioning

Overnight ECDC in D2, and bake at 60 C.
ECDC post RF conditioning before run.

Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00
** depending on FMIT#2 progress, we may need to delay the run by as
much as 2 hours but please set up for 9:00 start

Power systems as on 1060323032 (1.0 MA fiducial, 5.4 T, LSN)

A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled.

Gas Setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar + 2 psi Ne Hybrid DISABLED (PG1)
leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2)
fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
fill NINJA with 12 psi D2 Enabled

Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters

Torvac setup: Gate valves open

Important Diagnostics: magnetics, standard impurity spectroscopy

Run summary

We made little forward progress on antenna operation. E antenna
remains functioning but D antenna went bad on 027 and made little
progress in recovering. We attempted a number of things on J antenna
to improve operations but eventually undid them all. We did obtain a
350 msec, 3 MW pulse on 033. J antenna is unreliable and we do not know why.

Summary

Today we used static fill throughout and had a dud fraction of about 25%, even though the fields were pretty good throughout.

I consider that a rather convincing demonstration that the statistical effect of reduced dudding with high base pressure is not replicated by using static fill. This is unfortunate because it means static fill is no sort of panacea for duds. There are several other effects such as recent disruptions or ECDC which might be responsible for the improved statistics at high base pressure, but whose effects are not replicated by static fill.

The sparker was not showing substantial current in essentially all of the duds. There were a few plasmas without spark. This is consistent with the observed statistical analysis from prior years which shows that dud fraction is reduced from roughly 7% for nonspark cases to about 1% for spark cases.

As a side line, the shape evolution during the time .1 to .25 s was adjusted very gingerly until in 34 we had diversion at about .2s (cf about .25s).
