MP355 RF Conditioning

Session leader: Wukitch
Physics operator: Granetz

Overnight ECDC in D2, and bake at 60 C.
ECDC post RF conditioning before run.

Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00
** depending on RF testing progress, we may need to delay the run by as
much as 2 hours but please set up for 9:00 start
** before lockup, all transmitters need to be tested into dummy load

Power systems as on 1060331032 (1.0 MA fiducial, 5.4 T, LSN)

A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled.

Gas Setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar + 2 psi Ne Hybrid DISABLED (PG1)
fill B-side upper with 10 psi He4 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2)
fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
fill NINJA with 12 psi D2 Enabled

Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters

Torvac setup: Gate valves open

Important Diagnostics: magnetics, standard impurity spectroscopy

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ICRF Setup: FMIT#1,#3,&4 in run-on by 7:30. FMIT#2 in run-on by 8:00
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Plan: Continue ICRF conditioning (including Jport) in fiducial
discharges.

Once reasonable power is reached on J antenna, begin exploration
of pulse length and power limits

Session Leader Summaries

Run Summary:

D antenna operated up to 1.5 MW for 1 sec pulses. The voltage in the
phase shifter and stub tuner is ~25% lower with the transformers in
place.

E antenna operated reliably for several discharges but suffered a
setback on 006. We recovered operation to 1.1 MW and we should
install the quarter wave transformers in E as well.

J operation was improved and achieved 2.5 MW steady and 3 MW for short
periods. We conclude that the multipactor conditioning and glow
discharge improved the antenna operation. We should consider doing
this particularly after boronization. We scanned target density from
0.7 to 1.1 and found J had more retry difficulty at higher target
density.

Physics operator summary for Tuesday 04 Apr 2006:

MP#355 ICRF Conditioning

Session leaders: S. Wukitch (MP 355)
Physics operator: R. Granetz

The first half of the day went very well as far as the tokamak is
concerned. Ignoring an initial screw up with the gas fill on the first
shot, we reeled off 19 full-length plasmas in a row. The ICRF performance
was gradually improving, eventually achieving over 5 MW (with 3 MW from
J-port) for significant pulse lengths. Then we tried to switch to helium-4
fueling, using the B-side-upper valve. This is somewhat problematic, since
there's no density feedback control with this valve, so we were flying
blind as far as plenum pressure and valve timing. (Note that I turned off
all deuterium fueling after t=0, although the static pre-fill was
deuterium.) After a couple of tries we got some very low density plasmas
(shots 18,19,20). I then had the helium plenum pressure increased to 25
psi (was initially 10 psi). But at this point we started to get a lot of
duds, even though the fields and pressure looked fine. I did several
tweaks of the vertical field and the static pre-fill pressure, and got
several full-length plasmas (24,27,30), but I don't think we really
understand the cause of the duds. The RF was again able to reach 5 MW, but
I don't think the performance was significantly better in He compared to D2.

Late in the afternoon there were two breaches of the power room which were
apparently caused by wind shaking the door from the RF lab to the power
room. This needs to be fixed.

Scorecard: 22 plasmas (several were very short)
            6 duds
            1 fizzles
            0 gas system tests
            0 TF scanner tests
            0 power supply tests
1 no power shot cycle (after a breach in CHECK state)
            0 MDSplus cycle tests
           --------------
    Total: 30 shot cycles

Engineering setup for Tuesday 04 Apr 2006

MP#355 ICRF Conditioning

Session leaders: S. Wukitch (MP 355)
Physics operator: R. Granetz

Overnight ECDC in deuterium, and bake at 60 C.

The start of the run will probably be delayed by an hour or more, subject
to work on the ICRF.
The run will end at 17:00.

Power systems as on 1060331032

A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled.

Gas Setup:
   fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar + 2 psi Ne Hybrid DISABLED (PG1)
*****************************************************************
** fill B-side upper with 10 psi He4 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) **
*****************************************************************
   fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
  leave NINJA as is DISABLED

Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
  ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters

Torvac setup: Gate valves open

Key diagnostics:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ICRF Setup: Transmitters 1,3,4 in run-on by 07:30.
            Transmitter 2 in run-on by 08:30.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run plan: Continuation of MP 355, ICRF conditioning. We might try puffing
helium gas rather than deuterium to see if it helps the J-port
          antenna.

Apr 4 2006 10:04:53:280AM1060404001Robert GranetzShot 01 -- Dud. Very, very high gas pressure. We tried to switch to static fill just
after INIT started, but we think the PLC failed to do it, so then we
switched back to pulsed fill with 20 ms. Not sure what happened.
DNB is firing from t=0.3 to 0.6 s. MSE is taking data with new APD's.

Next shot: set up for static fill
Apr 4 2006 10:02:04:530AM1060404002Robert GranetzShot 02 -- Plasma. Good shot. Full length. 1 MA, 5.4 T, nl_04=0.8e20 m-2 (target).
Prf=1.6, then 2.6 MW, mostly from E and J. Many short ELMfree H-modes.
DNB is firing from t=0.3 to 0.6 s. MSE is taking data with new APD's.
Apr 4 2006 10:18:43:970AM1060404003Robert GranetzShot 03 -- Plasma. Good shot. Similar to previous shot. D-port antenna ran
better this time (1 MW). Total Prf=3.1 MW.

Next shot: repeat, no changes
Apr 4 2006 10:37:45:770AM1060404004Robert GranetzShot 04 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=3.8 MW total.

Next shot: no changes.
Apr 4 2006 10:51:25:520AM1060404005Robert GranetzShot 05 -- Plasma. Good shot. 2.9 MW just from J-port antenna for 100 ms. 1.3-1.4 MW
from D, for a total of 4.3 MW briefly. E had problems.

Next shot: repeat, no PCS changes.
Apr 4 2006 11:10:22:720AM1060404006Robert GranetzShot 06 -- Plasma. Good shot. D and J worked well, E is having problems.

Next shot: no PCS changes.
Apr 4 2006 11:31:18:330AM1060404007Robert GranetzShot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. Got D, E, and J.

Next shot: enable the neon/argon valve for Alex.
Apr 4 2006 11:44:46:347AM1060404008Robert GranetzShot 08 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf = 5.4 MW total for 0.3 s !!!!
J-port antenna was at 3.0 MW for most of the flattop.
Wth peaks at 145 kJ. H/(H+D) stays down at 10-11% even
though we haven't done an overnight boronization yet.

Next shot: no PCS changes.
Apr 4 2006 11:54:18:063AM1060404009Robert GranetzShot 09 -- Plasma. Good shot. Briefly got to 5.5 MW, but then E and J shut off.

Next shot: no PCS changes.
Apr 4 2006 12:07:02:557PM1060404010Robert GranetzShot 10 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: no PCS changes.
Apr 4 2006 12:24:48:333PM1060404011Robert GranetzShot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: no PCS changes.
Apr 4 2006 12:38:28:723PM1060404012Robert GranetzShot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2, then 4.1 MW. Fairly steady 2.0 MW from J-port.

Next shot: no PCS changes.
Apr 4 2006 12:50:32:143PM1060404013Robert GranetzShot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf = 3.4, then 4.7 MW. Max Wth = 125 kJ.

Next shot: raise nl_04 to 1.0e20 m-2 (from 0.8)
Apr 4 2006 01:03:59:800PM1060404014Robert GranetzShot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot. Got the higher density. Lots of early runaways.

Next shot: increase nl_04 to 1.1e20 m-2 (from 1.0)
Apr 4 2006 02:59:38:250PM1060404015Robert GranetzShot 15 -- Plasma. Good shot. Got slightly higher density. No runaways, even though I
didn't change the startup at all. RF is having problems.

Next shot: no PCS changes.
Apr 4 2006 01:26:39:643PM1060404016Robert GranetzShot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot. Got nl_04=1.1e20 m-2, as programmed. J-port barely ran.

Next shot: decrease nl_04 to 0.9e20 m-2 (from 1.1)
Apr 4 2006 01:52:08:363PM1060404017Robert GranetzShot 17 -- Plasma. Good shot. Got the lower density, as requested. Pretty good RF
performance.

Next shot: switch to helium plasmas. Enable B-side-upper (He4 at 10 psi), disable B-main
(aka C-side). Since we don't have feedback control with this valve, I've set
two 100 ms pulses (t=0-0.1 and 0.3-0.4), based on the actual valve drive voltage
from the preceding shot.
Apr 4 2006 02:04:27:940PM1060404018Robert GranetzShot 18 -- Plasma. Good shot. Helium. Density was lower than we wanted, but it
wasn't all that bad for an initial guess. Got nl_04 = 0.3e20 m-2.
J-port antenna seemed to like the helium, but not E-port.

Next shot: change segment 2 pg2 pulse to go from t=0.15 to 0.40 s (was 0.3-0.4).
Apr 4 2006 02:17:13:863PM1060404019Robert GranetzShot 19 -- Plasma, but disrupted very early (0.38 s). No idea why.

Next shot: try again.
Apr 4 2006 02:31:04:950PM1060404020Robert GranetzShot 20 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.20 s. Helium? nl_04=0.3-0.4e20 m-2

Next shot: based on Earl's input, raise the helium plenum pressure to 25 psi.
Apr 4 2006 02:46:31:153PM1060404021Robert GranetzShot 21 -- Fizzle. DNB gate valve didn't open (the PLC enable wasn't re-enabled after the
previous disruption triggered a torvac alarm), but I'm not going to blame the
fizzle on that. Fields look reasonable.

Next shot: repeat, no changes.
Apr 4 2006 02:58:47:000PM1060404022Robert GranetzShot 22 -- Dud. Things are going from bad to worse. The prefill pressure looks normal.
Bz0 is a little high.

Next shot: add -10 amps to IC_EF4.
Apr 4 2006 03:16:48:500PM1060404023Robert GranetzShot 23 -- Dud. Fields and D2 pressure look fine.

Next shot: add another -10 amps to IC_EF4.
Apr 4 2006 03:27:41:030PM1060404024Robert GranetzShot 24 -- Plasma. Good shot. Helium? nl_04=0.8e20 m-2...close enough. None of the
antennas seemed to like it though.

Next shot: repeat, no PCS changes.
Apr 4 2006 03:47:56:873PM1060404025Robert GranetzShot 25 -- Dud. Should have gone.

Next shot: delay start of segment 1 helium puffing until 20 ms.
Apr 4 2006 04:03:19:187PM1060404026Robert GranetzShot 26 -- Dud. Fields and pressure look perfect.

Next shot: raise static pre-fill to 1.7e-5 (was 1.5). Note, the pre-fill is definitely deuterium.
Apr 4 2006 04:06:30:327PM1060404026Robert GranetzSeveral minutes after this shot there was a personnel breach, although it's not clear
what door was breached, but it definitely was in the power room. This will slightly
delay the next shot.
Apr 4 2006 04:23:28:653PM1060404027Robert GranetzShot 27 -- Plasma. Good shot. Helium. nl_04=0.8e20 m-2. Nice RF. Prf=3.7, then 5.1 MW.
But Wth=124 kJ.

Next shot: repeat, no changes.
Apr 4 2006 04:34:42:483PM1060404028Robert GranetzShot 28 -- No power shot, because there was another security breach while we were
in CHECK. We think the wind gusts are causing the door from the RF lab to
the power room to move a little.

Next shot: try again.
Apr 4 2006 04:50:48:310PM1060404029Robert GranetzShot 29 -- Dud. Definitely don't understand this. I don't have any idea what to do now.

Next shot: raise static pre-fill again. Go to 1.9e-5 (was 1.7)
Apr 4 2006 05:06:49:467PM1060404030Robert GranetzShot 30 -- Plasma. Good shot. Helium. Prf was around 5 MW, but there was lots
of faulting. My impression is that operation in helium did not significantly
improve the ICRF performance.

End of run.
