| This was a successful run.
We learned two things that we didn't know previously: 1) we observed ELM filaments at the inboard midplane. They propagate inward in major radius (i.e. "out" toward the SOL). They occur BEFORE the filaments on the outboard side. (See shots 011 (@0.984s, @0.989 s ***** very good, @0.998 s ***** very good, 012, and 013 (@0.994s is good)). The filaments are only seen at rhos significantly greater than 0 (at rho >/= 0.8 cm, if you believe EFIT and the current registration of the views.) Views with rho < 0.4 cm see a decrease in signal, with a time history similar to the decrease seen on the views with rho<0 (i.e. the views inside the sep.) on the outboard side. 2) We got shots with good ELMs and a very hot pedestal for pedestal collisionalities of <0.3. Shot 1060510003 was the best example with pedestal collisionality as low as 0.25 and a Te pedestal height of ~900 eV. The target density for this shot was (Shots 008, 010-015 also had Te pedestal heights of 800-900 eV.) Plasmas with the same shape, but with higher target densities, were Ohmic EDA H-modes (shots 020-023). These had a broad QC Mode, a pedestal collisionalities of ~1 and Te pedestal heights of <400 eV. The target density on shot 022 & 023 was 0.61e20. This illustrates clearly that sharp alone is not sufficient for producing these ELMs, and probably only allows access to the low edge collisionality region. J. Hughes notes that the widths of the density pedestal are larger in this shape (4-5 mm as opposed to 2-4 mm), implying that particle transport is enhanced in this shape. This would tend to keep the density pedestal height and the pedestal collisionality low, thus allowing access to the ELMing regime. This may be more important than the shaped plasma being less stable to the peeling/ballooning modes that drive the ELMs. Martin Greenwald noted that the confinement in these shots fit the ELMy H-mode scaling (H-ITER89=1.8-2). shot 1060510020 (the shot after a between shot boronization) had an Ohmic H-mode that lasted 1 sec. J. Hughes noted that the Edge TS laser pulse was in or very close to an ELM crash at the following times: 003 - 0.976s (40 microsec after crash - RF and Te varying for pre and post laser pulse) and small ELM at 1.027s (110 microsec before crash) 010 - 0.927s (175 microsec before crash) 011 - 0.893s (309 microsec after crash - recovered), 1.094s (9 microsec before crash), 1.1435s (40 microsec after crash - RF and Te const for pre and post laser pulse - this one has low pedestal Te) 012 - 0.860s (410 microsec after crash - recovered), 0.927s (565 microsec after crash - recovered) 013 - 1.126s (61 microsec before crash - poor ELM), 1.193s (127 microsec after crash - very poor ELM) |

PO: Irby EO: Pfeiffer, Byford, Parkin This run was a continuation of 1060503 to produce large elms with strong shaping of the plasma and relatively low target density (4-5e19/m^2 nl04). The machine general ran well and some good elm data was produced. By shot 17 it was clear that the radiation was too high and we did a 15 minute boronization before shot 18. Shots 18 and 19 were fizzles even though the standard prescription was followed. Then shot 20 was a beautiful ohmic eda h-mode, but this type of shot was not very useful for the elm experiment. It took several shots to degas the walls and get the target density back down. Ten minutes of helium ECDC was run before shot 24, and by shot 25 we had elms again. We had 24 plasmas, 2 fizzles, and shot 26 had a power systems problem. |

I will not run the PSI5 today. I have modified the setup on the PSI4, believing that the problems during the 1060503 run were due to too much plasma light on the chip AFTER the capture. Thus I have removed the signal supplying the gate to the mechanical shutter from the "Shutter" output on the back of the controller and replaced it with the LPI decoder signal E3 (set to OPEN at 0.75 s and CLOSE at 0.85 s). The literature on the "Uniblitz" mechanical shutter shows that the opening time for 25-35 mm aperture shutters is ~15 msec, so this window should be fine as long as an ELM occurs in this window. Other Triggers are: ELM trigger system ENABLE - .8-1.3 s PSI4 hard trigger - 0.925 6810 start trigger - 0.8 (1MHz gives digitization thru 0.93 s) ref. voltage=1.1 V NINJA trigger at 0.65s for 0.1 s - B16-001 NINJA plenum=493 Torr (not enabled for 1st shot) The PSI4 is setup with the 25 mm lens set to fl 0.5 and F/1.8 The 55 mm NIKON lens is set to F/2.8, fl = infinity The filter is a D_alpha. I will stop down the 25mm lens when I see what the signal is. plasma into rampdown runaways okay nl04 target density 4e19/m^2 prad still high compared to shot 3 from today, but not too bad (0.9 vs 0.6 MW) hirex says it's moly |

plasma into rampdown target density down to 0.3e20/m^2 w/o any dpcs changes but JT is very happy with the shot --- elms propagating to inner wall neuts/hards still up radiated power 1.5 MW icrf looks good |
| May 10 2006 11:57:39:010AM | 1060510011 | Jim Irby | no dpcs changes --- resisted change to gas to fix runaways since Jim was very happy with the last shot

plasma --- JT complains about target density which is now finally up to the nl04 request: 5e19/m^2, will drop for next shot |
| May 10 2006 01:04:46:400PM | 1060510016 | Jim Irby | nl04 request to 4e19 from 5e19/m^2
