MP 437 - Field Reversal and Poloidal Rotation

Session Leader: A Ince-Cushman

We began the run attempting to get LSN EDA H-mode plasmas. These LSN
discharges were plagued by strong MARFEs and inconsistent RF trips which
limited the discharges to dithering H-modes. In an attempt to improve
performance a 10 minute boronization was applied between shots 12 and 13
using the now standard recipe (sweep 65 to 75 with dwell at 70 cm. 5 mTorr
20% diborane). The two shots preceding the boronization were fizzles, but
on shot 16 we finally produced an EDA H-mode. The next plasma (shot 18) was
back to dithering H-modes. We tried switching to LSN in the hope that the
borinzation had not been worn off in the divertor, but there did not seem to
be enough RF power to get into H-mode. We then switched back to USN for the
remainder of the run.

We were hoping to see a reversal of the 'kick' in poloidal rotation that has
been observed repeatedly on H-L transitions of EDA H-modes with the standard
field direction. We were only able to produce one EDA H-mode discharge
(shot 16) and the kick was not observed. It is not clear if this means that
the plasma conditions required for this kick were not properly reproduced or
if the kick is an artifact of the NeSoXs instrumentation. Hopefully we will
obtain additional data next week that will help to resolve this question.

All shots were at Ip = -0.8MA and Bt = -5.4

Steve Wolfe worked very hard to get the fix for the failed #11 flux loop installed for the run day. The first two shots seems to run okay, but with a very negative br0 being indicated. We then had three fizzles. By shot 05 Steve had determined that the br0 readings were not correct. Some reprogramming resulted in a plasma on shot 06, and a 1 mT positive jump in br0. All plasmas to this point had a very large MARFE causing trouble for the rf. We were only able to get briefly into h-mode on shot 08. On shot 09 we went to upper null with a Bart mode developing and problems with j-port (only 2 MW total). I also had too large an outer gap, which was corrected in shot 10. On shot 11 we tried raising the density a little to get an eda, but no success.

Before shot 13 we did a 10 minute boronization:

sweep 65 to 75 with dwell at 70 cm. 5 mTorr 20% diborane

Boronization recovery still costs two shots today. Reduced fill to 4 ms for first shot, then back to 16 for the second. It went on the third try w/o any changes. Nice eda for Alex. Boron depleated in one shot.

On shot 19 we returned to lsn hoping some boron was left, but just got the MARFE back. We tried dropping the density a little for 20 and upped the rf power to 3 MW, but still no h-mode or eda until very late. The rest of the run was done with a usn so that Alex could get some data with h-modes if not eda h-modes.
For the last shot of the day we increased the ar/ne puff to 80 ms so that NESOX could have a very good signal.

We need to figure out what to do about the MARFE. It begins around 0.45 s and then goes away with the start of rf. The start of the MARFE could be related to the drop in the inner wall gap around that time. I tried moving it away from the wall early in the day, but probably should have been more agressive. The MARFE was most serious in lsn but was still there in the usn cases. On shot 24 it seemed to leave behind some shrapnel on the inner wall as it moved away (see wide2 movie).

Session Leader Comments
May 19 2006 12:20:05:703PM1060519001Alex Ince-CushmanGood plasma.
The shot was based on shot 19 from yesterday (1060518) except that it was LSN instead of USN.

LSN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 7e19, RF = 0MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

For the next shot we will increase the target density and try to get some RF into the plasma.

May 19 2006 12:20:22:127PM1060519002Alex Ince-CushmanAnother good plasma although it disrupted at ~1.5s.

LSN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0e20, RF = 2MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

Despite 2W of power there was no H-mode. For the next shot we will up the RF to 3MW, and fiddle with the inner gap.
May 19 2006 12:20:42:673PM1060519006Alex Ince-CushmanDisruption at ~1.0s.

LSN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0, RF = 1.5-3MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

Large MARFE causing some problems, although the RF kills it.

May 19 2006 12:21:26:843PM1060519007Alex Ince-CushmanGood Shot. Brief H-mode

LSN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0, RF = 0-3MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

The MARFE is still coming in around .4s and is turned off by the RF. The RF was up to 3MW but there were some major faults around 1s.

May 19 2006 04:26:19:907PM1060519008Alex Ince-CushmanGood Shot. Two brief H-mode

LSN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0, RF = ~3MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

The MARFE persists ]. 3MW of RF with sporadic faults. It does not look like we will be able to get EDA H-modes in LSN. Switch to USN for the next shot.
May 19 2006 12:58:13:877PM1060519009Alex Ince-CushmanGood Shot. Sustained period of H-modes, but no EDA

USN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0, RF = 2MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

May 19 2006 04:25:35:860PM1060519010Alex Ince-CushmanGood Shot. Sustained period of H-modes, but no EDA

USN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0, RF = 2-3MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

May 19 2006 01:40:51:673PM1060519011Alex Ince-CushmanGood Shot. Sustained period of H-modes, but no EDA

USN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0, RF = 2-3MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

May 19 2006 01:42:58:657PM1060519012Alex Ince-CushmanGood Shot. Sustained period of H-modes, but no EDA

USN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0, RF = 2MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

For the next shot we are going to try a 10min between shot boronization.
May 19 2006 03:49:19:330PM1060519015Alex Ince-Cushman1st successful shot after Boronization

USN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0, RF = 1MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

Shot looks good but we need more than 1MW of RF to get an EDA H-mode

May 19 2006 03:58:04:797PM1060519016Alex Ince-CushmanFinally an EDA H-mode

USN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0, RF = 2-3MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

The RF atennas faulted one by one from about t > 1.38
May 19 2006 04:23:56:953PM1060519018Alex Ince-CushmanBack to dithering H-modes

USN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0, RF = ~2MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

The RF was quite clean
May 19 2006 04:11:57:813PM1060519019Alex Ince-CushmanSwitch to LSN in the hope that the boronization has not worn off down there.

LSN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0, RF = 2-3MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

The RF performed very well, but there wasn't enough power to get into H-mode.

May 19 2006 04:19:53:110PM1060519020Alex Ince-CushmanOne very brief H-mode killed by RF trip.

LSN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0, RF = ~2-3MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar

May 19 2006 04:59:18:703PM1060519022Alex Ince-CushmanNo chance of getting H-modes in LSN any more so switch back to USN. The RF performed well at 3MW with only one major fault.

USN, Ip = -0.8, Bt = -5.4, nl04 = 1.0, RF = 3MW
Ar/Ne Puff: 50ms @ 0.3s, 2psi Ne & 1psi Ar
