Run Summary for 1060531

MP#409 "SOL Phase space studies" - Reversed field (second attempt)

This was a productive run, even though it did not cover the full range of plasma densities
called out in the MP. Most importantly, we were able to collect some good edge plasma
profile and flow data in matched LSN/USN discharges under the reversed field conditions.
These data will be key to sorting out effects that truly depend on the direction
of grad-B relative to the x-point location - many thanks to Steve Wolfe for scheduling
this second attempt of MP#409 in reversed field.

The productivity of the run started off slow, in part because we were determined not
to overheat the A-port probe and therefore lose the operation of the 'east' electrode,
which has shown a tendency of developing a short circuit in previous runs. Also, for some
reason (current sensing problem? - see physop summary), we needed to fiddle a bit with
inner/outer gaps in the early shots (1,3,4,7), only to undo the tweaks later. By
shot#10, we got things going. Despite 8 fizzles, we were able to scan the density
from NL04=0.4 to NL04=1.0 in USN/LSN. We ran out of time to explore higher densities
in a controlled way. For example, The last shot was a LSN attempt at NL04=1.2 that
resulted in an upper divertor MARFE leading to NL04=1.6. On some scans the 'east'
electrode on the ASP developed a short at peak insertion. Still, we can use the
in-going scan data for these cases. In a few other scans the electrode behaved
normally. In fact it became less prone to short by the end of the run.

The significance of the profile and flow results will require a detailed analysis,
but based on raw scope results it seems that the SOL flows are behaving in a symmetrical
way with respect to B-field reversal and x-point location. John Rice reported
that the core rotation is also exhibiting a nearly symmetrical swap. These results are
important since they indicate that differences in upper/lower divertor geometries
and/or small differences in USN/LSN flux surface shapes are not so important.

PO Summary for Run 1060531: MP409 Sol Space Studies
in Reversed Field Continued

SL: Labombard
PO: Irby

It was not a great day for startups. We had a lot of fizzles for
various reasons.

We had problems with feedback to the magnets today. We were getting
incorrect magnet currents from turn-on. Bill C and Sam went out and
checked things out, added some instrumentation to EF1 and everything
was fixed. This problem caused several fizzles.

We had several fizzles today that were caused by jumps in position
around 15 ms into the shot. On shot 22 we increased the gas a little
and made Bz0 a little more negative. These changes may have helped a
little. We also may have had early injections (dust) causing
problems. There were also several shots with mT jumps in Bz0 w/o any
programmed changes.

It was hard to get the requested density during the SNU shots. The
density dropped quickly beyond about 0.3 s and we had to request
considerably higher densities from nl04 than normally needed in SNL.
There also seemed to be outgassing beyond 1.0 s that caused the
density to rise rapidly.

Score: 9 fizzles, 21 plasmas

Steve just noticed that I didn't replace the RCUR offset in seg 1 after the recalculation ---- set it to -1200. This may explain the unusual bz0 in shot 1.

May 31 2006 09:57:46:840AM1060531003Jim IrbyAdded -1200 offset to RCUR in seg 1

plasma into rampdown

inner gap looks very good at approx 12 mm during most of shot

May 31 2006 10:33:52:607AM1060531004Jim Irbyargon puff reduced from 50 to 40 ms starting at 0.3 s

Brian would like flatter outer gap

plasma into rampdown

May 31 2006 10:44:20:247AM1060531005Jim Irbytweak to outer gap (RCUR) again to try to decrease gap from 0.5 to 0.8 s.

plasma into rampdown

Brian happy with gap --- good enough

May 31 2006 11:14:14:760AM1060531006Jim Irbyreduced prepuff from 18 to 17 ms

fizzle --- 1 mT jump down in Bz0 at 6 ms??

oh2, and ef1 currents all high relative to earlier shots from today.
oh1 current high relative to previous days (0518 for example).

May 31 2006 11:19:57:793AM1060531007Jim Irbytry again, but may have to check supplies, dpcs

plasma into rampdown but fields still off
May 31 2006 11:52:16:857AM1060531008Jim Irbyprepuff from 17 to 19 ms

ef4 from +1315 to +1325 A

fizzle --- field off --- not much increase in Bz0 from ef4 tweak

Bill and Sam go into power room to check supplies
May 31 2006 12:08:43:713PM1060531009Jim Irbypower supplies checked out. Some instrumenation added. Try again with no dpcs changes.

plasma into rampdown --- fields now look much better --- oh1 back down to where it should be.

inner gap now 2 mm to small
May 31 2006 12:28:06:010PM1060531010Jim Irbynl_04 request to 4e19 from 6e19/m^2
inner gap increased by 2 mm before 0,9 s

plasma into rampdown
May 31 2006 12:38:54:810PM1060531011Jim Irbyseg 2 off, seg 3 on --- upper null

plasma into rampdown --- density too low otherwise good
May 31 2006 12:48:47:370PM1060531012Jim Irbynl04 request to 5e19 from 4e19/m^2

density still too low --- PO screwed up and programmed seg 2

May 31 2006 12:58:03:667PM1060531013Jim Irbynl04 request to 5e19/m^2 in seg 3

plasma into rampdown --- density a little better

May 31 2006 01:21:39:463PM1060531014Jim Irbynl04 request to 7e19 from 5e19/m^2

plasma into rampdown --- density about 6 not 7 e19/m^2

May 31 2006 01:30:10:840PM1060531015Jim Irbyno changes

plasma for 1.77 s

note that TCI had major drift problem on shot 14. Seems to be fine on this shot

May 31 2006 01:50:28:497PM1060531016Jim Irbynl04 request to 9e19 from 7e19/m^2

good shot --- plasma for 1.86 s

May 31 2006 01:51:52:963PM1060531017Jim Irbyno changes

good plasma --- Brian is happy --- going SLN fo next shot

May 31 2006 02:09:54:440PM1060531018Jim Irbyseg 3 off, seg 2 on: back to SLN

nl04 density request in seg 2 to 8e19/m^2

plasma into rampdown --- density 7 not 8 e19/m^2 -- tweak up for next shot

May 31 2006 02:30:56:370PM1060531019Jim Irbynl04 request to 9e19/m^2 from 8

fizzle --- injection or thrash at 15 ms did us in

May 31 2006 02:36:59:590PM1060531020Jim Irbyno changes, just try again

plasma --- looks good --- got 8e19/m^2
May 31 2006 02:50:56:280PM1060531021Jim Irbynl04 request to 1e20/m^2 hoping for 9e19/m^2

fizzle --- another thrash at 16 ms

May 31 2006 03:15:24:497PM1060531022Jim Irbyprepuff gas increased from 18 to 19 ms
dropped ef4 by 10 A

plasma --- looks good.
May 31 2006 03:27:03:170PM1060531023Jim Irbynl04 request to 1.1e20/m^2 (trying for 1.0)

plasma --- looks good
May 31 2006 03:40:52:653PM1060531024Jim Irbyseg 2 off, seg 3 on: SNU again

nl04 request to 1.1e20/m^2 in seg 3

fizzle --- no clear reason...
May 31 2006 04:14:59:390PM1060531025Jim Irbyrepeat

fizzle --- looks like injection at 15 ms or so

May 31 2006 04:15:20:247PM1060531026Jim Irbyno changes

good shot === good density
May 31 2006 04:21:48:747PM1060531027Jim Irbynl04 request to 1.3e20/m^2 in seg 3

fizzle --- Bz0 rather negative.
May 31 2006 04:35:51:390PM1060531028Jim Irbyef4 from +1315 to +1330 A

plasma --- good startup at last (for a while)

May 31 2006 04:48:33:170PM1060531029Jim Irbyseg 3 off, seg 2 on

nl04 request at 1.3e20/m^2

fizzle --- another jump in Bz0 --- early mag currents okay

May 31 2006 04:57:00:920PM1060531030Jim Irbyef4 from +1330 to +1320 A

plasma --- all done
