| Run Summary for 1060531 MP#409 "SOL Phase space studies" - Reversed field (second attempt) This was a productive run, even though it did not cover the full range of plasma densities called out in the MP. Most importantly, we were able to collect some good edge plasma profile and flow data in matched LSN/USN discharges under the reversed field conditions. These data will be key to sorting out effects that truly depend on the direction of grad-B relative to the x-point location - many thanks to Steve Wolfe for scheduling this second attempt of MP#409 in reversed field. The productivity of the run started off slow, in part because we were determined not to overheat the A-port probe and therefore lose the operation of the 'east' electrode, which has shown a tendency of developing a short circuit in previous runs. Also, for some reason (current sensing problem? - see physop summary), we needed to fiddle a bit with inner/outer gaps in the early shots (1,3,4,7), only to undo the tweaks later. By shot#10, we got things going. Despite 8 fizzles, we were able to scan the density from NL04=0.4 to NL04=1.0 in USN/LSN. We ran out of time to explore higher densities in a controlled way. For example, The last shot was a LSN attempt at NL04=1.2 that resulted in an upper divertor MARFE leading to NL04=1.6. On some scans the 'east' electrode on the ASP developed a short at peak insertion. Still, we can use the in-going scan data for these cases. In a few other scans the electrode behaved normally. In fact it became less prone to short by the end of the run. The significance of the profile and flow results will require a detailed analysis, but based on raw scope results it seems that the SOL flows are behaving in a symmetrical way with respect to B-field reversal and x-point location. John Rice reported that the core rotation is also exhibiting a nearly symmetrical swap. These results are important since they indicate that differences in upper/lower divertor geometries and/or small differences in USN/LSN flux surface shapes are not so important. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Quick shot log 01- LSN, NL04=0.64, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+1), no ISP 02 - fizzle 03- LSN, NL04=0.64, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+5) at sep., ISP (22ms) excellent 04- LSN, NL04=0.58, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+7) could be deeper, ISP (22ms) excellent 05- LSN, NL04=0.56, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+9), ISP (22ms) excellent 06- fizzle 07- LSN, NL04=0.54, Ip=0.8MA, ASP not scanning, ISP (22ms) excellent 08- fizzle 09- LSN, NL04=0.54, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+10) EAST shorts on last scan, ISP (22ms) too deep! 10- LSN, NL04=0.48-0.42, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+10) good, last scan a little deep, ISP (22ms) good 11- USN, NL04=0.34, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+6) could be deeper, ISP (22ms) good 12- USN, NL04=0.33, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+8) could be deeper, ISP (22ms) good 13- USN, NL04=0.4-0.38, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+9), ISP (22ms) good 14- USN, NL04=0.6-0.7, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+10) ok, ISP (22ms) good 15- USN, NL04=0.59-0.54, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+11) second scan too deep, ISP (22ms) good 16- USN, NL04=0.82-0.77, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+10), ISP (22ms) good 17- USN, NL04=0.82-0.77, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+11) great, ISP (22ms) great 18- LSN, NL04=0.72, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+10) EAST shorts on last scan, ISP (22ms) 19- fizzle 20- LSN, NL04=0.78-0.8, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+10), ISP (22ms) 21- fizzle 22- LSN, NL04=0.86, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+11) EAST shorting on first and second scan, ISP (22ms) 23- LSN, NL04=0.94-0.97, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+11) great, ISP (22ms) excellent 24- fizzle 25- fizzle 26- USN, NL04=1.0-0.95, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+11) good, ISP (22ms) good 27- fizzle 28- USN, NL04=1.15, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+12) good, ISP (22ms) good 29- LSN, NL04=1.7-1.5 upper divertor MARFE, Ip=0.8MA, ASP(+12), ISP (22ms) |

| PO Summary for Run 1060531: MP409 Sol Space Studies
in Reversed Field Continued SL: Labombard PO: Irby It was not a great day for startups. We had a lot of fizzles for various reasons. We had problems with feedback to the magnets today. We were getting incorrect magnet currents from turn-on. Bill C and Sam went out and checked things out, added some instrumentation to EF1 and everything was fixed. This problem caused several fizzles. We had several fizzles today that were caused by jumps in position around 15 ms into the shot. On shot 22 we increased the gas a little and made Bz0 a little more negative. These changes may have helped a little. We also may have had early injections (dust) causing problems. There were also several shots with mT jumps in Bz0 w/o any programmed changes. It was hard to get the requested density during the SNU shots. The density dropped quickly beyond about 0.3 s and we had to request considerably higher densities from nl04 than normally needed in SNL. There also seemed to be outgassing beyond 1.0 s that caused the density to rise rapidly.
