MP390 Evaluation of D(3He) minority heating

Overnight ECDC in D2, and bake at 60 C.

Run begins at 08:00 and ends at 17:00

Power systems as on 1060505005 (1.0 MA fiducial, 5.4 T, LSN)

A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled.

Gas Setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar + 2 psi Ne Hybrid DISABLED (PG1)
fill B-side upper with 15 psi 3He Hybrid enabled
fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
fill NINJA with 12 psi D2 Enabled


Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters

Important Diagnostics: standard impurity spectroscopy, Mo source
monitor, McPherson, He3 monitor

ICRF Setup: FMIT#1-4 in run-on by 7:30.

Run Plan

Start at 8:00 with power system checks to verify bus connections.

1. (5-10 shots) Start a plasma with BT = 5.2 T, Ip = 1 MA, nl = 0.8
e20m^-2 to check the operationality of J antenna. The RF power of J
starts at 1 MW. Need to check transmitters behavior, phase control,
arc detection, and RF pickup by other diagnostics.

2. (10 shots) Run constant power and compare J ant with D+E antenna (B
field at 5.2 T). Run constant RF power, J and D+E at 2-3 MW.

3. (5 shots) Upper single null plasma, H-mode power threshold
comparison. (1060601012)

4. (5 shots) Overlay all antennas to obtain total 3 MW RF (vary
the power ratio of J and D+E).

5. (3 shots) Vary the antenna phase shot by shot, [0, pi, pi, 0], [0,
pi/2, pi, 3/2pi] and [0, -pi/2, pi, -3/2pi], J at 2.5 MW, D+E at
2.5 MW. (B = 5.2 T)

6. (5 shots) He3 puff scan. B field at 5.0 T, Ip = 1.0 MA, nl04=1.0e20
m^-2. Scan He3 puff shot by shot: 60, 80, 100, 120, 140 ms. Adjust
field to keep absorption on axis.

7. (5 shots) density scan. Run nl 04 = 0.5, 0.7, .9, 1.1, 1.3 e20
m^-2. Adjusting the He3 puff time to keep nHe3/ne approximately
constant.

Predictors have to be recalculated because of the loss of the F11 flux loop after May 5.

Run Summary

We struggled to get J operating. J4 was oscillating initially which
was surprising since we measured a clean spectrum last Thursday into
load and it operated fine into vacuum. Adjusting the match solution
eventually eliminated the problem. We then struggled with E antenna
having a power limit around 0.5 MW?!? J antenna operated to 1.5 MW
and struggled at higher power. As far as the comparison goes, the
radiated power fraction in L-mode for J is about twice D+E. A small
He puff scan was performed because we were concerned little He3 was
making it into the plasma and we will start with that tomorrow.

The machine ran well today. The toroidal field and current were returned to the "normal" direction (clockwise from above), so the first part of the run was devoted to magnet tests, which went smoothly. The first plasma shot went off before 11:30 am. The only startup tweaks were small downward adjustments of BR_0 and a 1 msec reduction in prepuff midway through the run. All shots were 1MA lower single null. The lone fizzle came after a 1 MA disruption - probably should have reduced the prefill puff for the subsequent shot. Many shots had early hard x-rays.
