--------------------------------------------------------- Power System tests possibly followed by MP465 WASP setup activities (pre-plasma tests only) MP298a C-Mod Startup The main purpose of this run is Engineering Power System tests. Most testing will be carried out under PLC control. DPCS will optionally be used to perform double swing test of the EF4 supply and provide input for the Chopper (EFC) system. Gas puff tests will also be carried out under DPCS control, as allowed by the Engineering Operator. ECDC ---- ECDC should be run overnight in D2 at 2e-4 Torr. Scan from 44 to 103 cm with resistance dwell at 45 cm Gas Setup: ---------- fill B-top 6psi D2 Hybrid Disabled (PG4) fill B-side lower 1 psi Argon Hybrid Disabled (PG1) fill B-side Upper as is, Hybrid Disabled (PG2) fill B-main 40psi D2 Hybrid Disabled (PG3) NINJA pumped out, Disabled * Valves will be Enabled for testing during the course of the day. Shot sequence for the power system testing will be determined by the Engineering operator. Additional TF tests are requested prior to plasma operation for verification of the correct bias current sign for the inner wall WASP probe (MP#465). Session Leader for these shots will be either B. LaBombard or N. Smick. There will likely be a cell access and 30 minute delay during these tests to change a driver from A-port WASP to K-port WASP. If we get to it, we will attempt to begin plasma operation under the long-standing MP#298a "C-Mod Startup". The following engineering setup should be used: ******************************************************************** Power Systems as on 1060613015 Acoil Configuration +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot, Enabled Check on TF invert time relative to back-porch programming (see Irby) Gas setup as above, except ENABLE B-top and B-main. TORVAC: Pumping Gate valves open Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, Z-bolo Check with Terry and/or Reinke before opening VUV ICRF setup: None ******************************************************************** Physop plan for power tests: ---------------------------- Draw gas and p.s. waveforms as requested. Verify magnetics signals and DPCS inputs; special attention to f11 flux loop. Look for current in cryopump hardware near EF1 pocket on commutation tests (probably hard to see until we try for a null though, maybe not then). Physop plan for MP#298a: ------------------------ Load from 1060613015 (first shot after last field reversal to normal direction, LSN, 5.4T). Probably get a dpcs config warning - verify dpcs_fizzle source shot for normal current direction (1060308026). Reduce Ip from 1MA to 800kA, change NL04 from 9e19 to 6e19 (assuming TCI is working); if TCI not working, then turn off NL04 feedback and set Segment 2 pre-programmed PG3 to zero volts, after an initial puff. Tune startup as required, try for plasma shots to clean up machine. Consider lower Ip target (600kA) depending on results. |

| A few more glitches today.
. lack of heaters on lower vertical ports caused leak to 2.5e-5 Torr until Andy and Ronald got the heaters going. . An electrolytic cap blew in the power room UPS spraying the inside of the UPS cabinet with vital fluids. The UPS is the primary backup for control and fault electronics for power supplies and alternator, so we decided not to continue the power tests until this unit is repaired. . Bob Granetz reported problems with F01 and F21 . Steve Wolfe reports we lost gas puff monitor information for a shot or two. Probably CAMAC issue. . SECURE to CONTROLLED acces issue still being worked on We did manage to test the EFC, EF2U, and EF2L supplies, and started to look at the C-coils. |

| Mar 13 2007 08:47:11:680AM | Jim Irby | We are still having problems with the ACCESS system. We can currently go into SECURE access, but can not go into CONTROLLED access. So to get into the power room we will have to go to FREE access. | |
| Mar 13 2007 09:43:19:467AM | 1070313001 | Jim Irby | Got some EFC current!
EFC Rogowkis okay, shunts okay |
| Mar 13 2007 09:53:32:390AM | 1070313002 | Jim Irby | EFC test
prepuff and main enabled. Got gas |
| Mar 13 2007 10:00:33:000AM | 1070313003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#3: No gas response to the b-main pulse in seg1 There's also no signal from the valve, can't tell whether it actually went or not. All other signals are present. Keep an eye on it. |
| Mar 13 2007 10:39:14:250AM | 1070313003 | Jim Irby | pg3 (main) start moved from 0.5 to .01 s for 10 ms

| Mar 13 2007 10:19:25:310AM | 1070313004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#4: Jim has a visitor, wolfe filling in as physop. Use his PCS if I need it. EF2U test PLC control. Leave gas puff as on shot 3, about 20-50ms Got puffs on this one. Still no trace from B-main Bob's reporting problems on f01 and f21. |
| Mar 13 2007 10:22:49:000AM | 1070313005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#5: EF2L test PLC control. Leave gas puff as on shot 3, about 20-50ms Very small gas puffs this time? Shape is the same it looks like the ratiomatic response is down a factor of ten? I'm still getting no signal from the main valve \ENGINEERING::TOP.TORVAC.GAS.PVALVE_4:WAVEFORM This was working yesterday. F21 came on half-way through the shot, ends with a baseline offset. F01 still just has bit noise. |
| Mar 13 2007 10:51:53:810AM | 1070313006 | Jim Irby | Have leak (looks like air). Seems to have happened between shots 4 and 5. Machine up to 2.5e-5 Torr (at 10:48 AM) and rising.
Cooling shut down, going to free access. Brian was running f-port scanning probe, but when he pumped it out nothing happened. |
| Mar 13 2007 11:06:41:937AM | 1070313006 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#6 - Load from 1051031007 for C-coil test. Warns about using new dpcs, and bad magnetics. Ignore magnetics, it is using baseline sub and fizzle; should be ok. Pvalve trace is back. I should have had the gas valve enable turned off we got big puff from pg3, since the f.d. was out to 1.7sec No output from acoil, looks like I sent a demand signal We seem to have a leak. |
| Mar 13 2007 11:18:10:373AM | 1070313006 | Jim Irby | Lost UPS power in power room. This loss shut down scanners, bus instrumentation, and O2 alarms, etc. Systems coming back up with UPS bypassed (11:18). |
| Mar 13 2007 11:21:26:077AM | 1070313006 | Jim Irby | Basepressure coming down --- had frosted up flanges on lower verticals, which may have been the cause. Heaters were installed.
