Run plan for Tuesday, March 20, 2007 MP#298a C-Mod Startup SL: wolfe PO: Snipes Today's goal, as on last Friday, is to get plasma and begin the process of cleaning up the machine. We hope that the situation with the flux loops on the B-bot#1 feedthrough will be remedied. If not, we will almost certainly have to stop and begin warming the machine up for a helium vent. For the first shot we will need to test the OH2 fizzle detector delay, which was not working on Friday. A double swing wave-form for the oh2's was stored in 1070316002 (though it was not actually used on that shot, which was an OH1 PLC test). The programmed waveform is -10kA swinging to +10kA starting at t=0; this should be good enough, although it might be better to leave the current at -10kA until after .6 sec, so that the fizzle response is more obvious. Engineering should set up for OH2 under hybrid control, with no commutation, and the fizzle detector in its normal setting [.08,1.8], and normal start and invert times. The oh2 fizzle delays should be at 500msec. If the new RSView programming is working, we should see the response on the OH2 voltage and current at ~580msec. This feature must be working before we try any plasma shots. We should also check the flux loop response on this test. If we decide to try for plasma, the starting point would be 1070316001, which is based on 1060613015 with the current dropped to 800kA (change the segment title) and density NL04=6e19. We may as well take one shot even if the flux loops are still broken, since Bob thinks a disruption may help. Assuming we are continuing, Tune startup as required, try for plasma shots to clean up machine. Consider lower Ip target (600kA) depending on results. If the signals are available, monitor Z-meter and H/D. Goals will be to get reproducible startups and full length plasmas. |

| Physop Plan for 1070320 MP298a C-Mod Startup Physics Operator: Joseph Snipes Session Leader: Steve Wolfe Overnight ECDC Run begins at 9:00 and ends at 17:00 *** Make sure the LH grill has been pulled out of the plasma!!! *** Test OH2 fizzle detector delay. If it fails as it did on Friday, it will need to be fixed before continuing. Flux loops will be assessed and if they do not work, we will stop the run. The main purpose of this run is to develop startup plasmas to initiate the new run campaign. Gas Setup: ---------- fill B-top 6psi D2 Hybrid Enabled(PG4) fill B-side lower 1 psi Argon Hybrid Disabled (PG1) fill B-side Upper as is, Hybrid Disabled (PG2) fill B-main 40psi D2 Hybrid Enabled(PG3) NINJA pumped out, Disabled The following engineering setup should be used: ******************************************************************** Power Systems as on 1060613015 Acoil Configuration +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot, Enabled Check on TF invert time relative to back-porch programming (see Irby) Gas setup as above, except ENABLE B-top and B-main. TORVAC: Pumping Gate valves open Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, Z-bolo, VUV ICRF setup: None ******************************************************************** Physop plan for MP#298a: ------------------------ Begin with 1070316002 for an OH2 fizzle detector test. If successful, try for plasmas and load from 1070316001 where Ip is 0.8 MA and NL04 is 6e19 (assuming TCI is working); if TCI not working, then turn off NL04 feedback and set Segment 2 pre-programmed PG3 to zero volts, after an initial puff. Tune startup as required, try for plasma shots to clean up machine. Consider lower Ip target (600kA) depending on results. |

SL Summary for Tuesday, March 20, 2007 MP298a SL: wolfe PO: Snipes EO: Cochran, Byford, Parkin Most of the things previously identified as broken worked today, but we did not succeed in getting plasmas past the breakdown stage. Access control still can't deal with opening the big door in controlled access, but Gary arranged a workaround for today when we needed a cell access and the O2 level was slow to rise with the door closed. We started with a successful test of the oh2 fizzle delay programming. We then has a slight delay while Josh fixed a problem with network communication with the mdsip servers which caused a problem for the pcdaqdpcs1 servers; this was apparently caused by an "improvement" which did not take into account that pcdaqdpcs1 goes silent when interrupts are off during the real-time loop. This prevented all the store actions on shot 1 on this server from happening. Shot#2 was a test shot to verify that it was fixed. Shot#3 was the first plasma attempt. All the loops that Bob and Willy zapped on the B-bottom #1 connector yesterday were working today. On shot#3 f15, a partial on a different connector which had been flakey last week, was observed to be bad. Also on shot#3 the EF1L commutation failed. After shot#5 Bob went in and zapped f15, succeeding in getting this signal back for the rest of the day. After a few more tests, EF1L commutation was recovered, as were the TMX supplies which failed on shot#4. We started trying for plasma again on shot #7 (fizzle, but a decent null). All the flux loops looked good the rest of the day, except for f11 which occasionally had baseline offsets up to 30mWb. Since we presently aren't using this signal, it didn't matter, but this loop is a candidate for zapping. Nulls didn't look bad from shot 7 on, although the Bz waveform had some anomalies. We explored a lot of the usual parameter space without notable success (see physop logbook entries). We took the gas as low as 14msec and as high as 29. Lower pressures, along with some extreme Br0 and Bz programs, gave duds. There is a possibility the sparker is shorted; the traces look too smooth. Jim is checking it out after the run. However, the high pre-fill shots didn't look like they were choking on too much gas, so this may not have mattered. Brian cross-calibrated the ratiomatic against the MKS gauge at shot#19, and changed the values for other shots, so the ratiomatic readings should now be correct. The calibration factor was around 0.6 though. The early shots today gave high coax resistance warnings on oh2l, starting around 3.9uOhms. The resistance dropped steadily through the day, ending at below 1uOhm. Score another one for the dpcs_fizzle double swing. Base pressures were extremely low all day, below 2e-7. This may have contributed to the startup problems. I have some hope that things may be better tomorrow after ecdc. Note that last night we only got about 90minutes of ecdc before it shut down at ~10PM, and another 90 minutes this morning. There is some possibility that some of the breakdown plasmas today were going vertically unstable. This may require some tweaking of the supply voltages tomorrow, either OH1 or the Oh2's. |

| The run went OK but we had difficulty getting plasmas. We stopped once to allow Granetz to go into the cell and zap flux loop F15 with a charged capacitor to fix its intermittency. It seems to have worked and we had all flux loops (except F11 which is not being used) working throughout the rest of the day. The fizzle detector test also went well on shot 1. We struggled varying Br0, EF4 current, pre-puff, and even the RCUR offset value to attempt to get sustained breakdowns, but we were unsuccessful. There were a few power supply faults and several test shots including shots 1 - 6 and shot 30. There were 31 total shots with 18 fizzles, 6 duds, 3 power supply failures, and 4 test shots. One successful thing in the run was the nearly continuous reduction in the OH resistance, which started out about 3.7 uOhm and dropped to lower than 1 uOhm by the end of the day. Perhaps, overnight ECDC will help clean things up a bit and improve operations. We noticed that the breakdown plasmas appeared to be in the divertor region rather than in the center of the machine. So, it is possible that the fields need to change significantly because of the new cryopump. |

| Mar 20 2007 09:21:26:313AM | 1070320001 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#1: OH2 fizzle delay test Did double swing No dpcs outputs. I don't understand what happened with dpcs on this shot. Nothing in the logfile after realtime, it looks like the store didn't do anything? The realtime seems to have exited at 75241 steps, maybe there is something screwy in the programming. Josh is looking into it. It has errors in the action monitor claiming null pointer found where something was expected for the dpcs store action and a dio2 action on pcdaqdpcs1. |
| Mar 20 2007 09:48:56:893AM | 1070320002 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#2: Josh has reset some parameters on the Mds server tcp/ip communications that he thinks were responsible for the loss of dpcs store actions on shot #1. Engineers have reset servers, per Josh's instructions. We will take a test shot (cycle only) before proceeding with plasma shots. Test shot looks ok, except that my compare volts scope blew away and won't restart. dpcs logfile looks ok, except for lots of heap variable garbage collection from the last problem. outputs look ok, exit is at 85001, as expected. Go for a shot. |
| Mar 20 2007 10:09:05:360AM | 1070320003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#3: Go for plasma. Dud. EF1L did not commutate. f15 is broken on this shot; this is not on the same connector There is nothing close to a null on this shot. |
| Mar 20 2007 10:14:45:080AM | 1070320003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#3: Go for plasma. Dud. EF1L did not commutate. f15 is broken on this shot; this is not on the same connector There is nothing close to a null on this shot. I think the problem is the f15, but I'm not sure. Maybe it will fix itself. |
| Mar 20 2007 10:22:14:110AM | 1070320004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#4: try again. If f15 is still bad, it may need a zap. Still no breakdown. TMX's didn't go this time. F15 is still bad. EF1L did not commutate again. Lost Pat's voice. |
| Mar 20 2007 10:46:21:173AM | 1070320005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#5: Testing EF1 comm bank charge. Bank charges ok. |
| Mar 20 2007 11:24:57:313AM | 1070320006 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#6: EF1 commutation test. TMX's will also be tested under hybrid control. Bob has zapped the f15 loop, will see if it is working. This signal can in principle be synthesized. EF1's commutated, got the ef2's. EFC is there too. Signal on f15 looks ok. |
| Mar 20 2007 11:43:31:690AM | 1070320007 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#7: Try again for plasma. Got a flash anyway. Br not too bad, a little bit of plasma current. Looks like some flakes early on the CIII and Halpha Tweak gas and go again. Note that the bigboard display is missing the oh1 and oh2 currents, and it has the the EF1 values as reverse instead of forward. |
| Mar 20 2007 12:01:05:173PM | 1070320008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#8: fizzle. Try a bz tweak. Possible small offset on f11 |
| Mar 20 2007 12:09:50:033PM | 1070320009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: Try a bz tweak. Another fizzle. Try a br tweak, maybe drop gas some more. |
| Mar 20 2007 12:22:38:020PM | 1070320010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10: Tuning the startup. Dud - tune the other way. Note that the pressure readings on the gas scope (the plenum pressures) are completly nonsense. B-top shows nothing anywhere, B-side lower and B-main both claim to have argon, at 18.2 and 19.8 psi. |
| Mar 20 2007 12:28:43:893PM | 1070320011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11: Another dud. Raise fill try to get the flash back. |
| Mar 20 2007 12:41:04:347PM | 1070320012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: got the flash back, that was just gas? late breakdown. |
| Mar 20 2007 12:57:21:610PM | 1070320013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13: fizzle. breakdown is earlier. Looks like it hits something. Bz looks too positive, but it seems to be moving out early, before the big spike on CIII. |
| Mar 20 2007 01:07:50:563PM | 1070320014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: Another fizzle. Worse, later breakdown. 18msec !? Go the other way? |
| Mar 20 2007 01:20:06:407PM | 1070320015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: More Bz Fizzle. |
| Mar 20 2007 01:40:09:610PM | 1070320016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: dud |
| Mar 20 2007 01:49:13:440PM | 1070320017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17: dud Is the sparker really working? It shows 6mA |
| Mar 20 2007 02:00:07:863PM | 1070320018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: dud Raise the pre-puff |
| Mar 20 2007 02:16:36:240PM | 1070320019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: fizzle, at least we got that back. Up to 45kA or so, then it hits something Seems to be moving up. |
| Mar 20 2007 02:26:10:240PM | 1070320020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: fizzle, a little worse. |
| Mar 20 2007 02:45:26:943PM | 1070320021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: fizzle, a little worse. later breakdown, 9msec f11 had about a 30mWb jump on this one. |
| Mar 20 2007 02:52:47:477PM | 1070320022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: br back to 0.0 fizzle, better breakdown, gets to 40kA. |
| Mar 20 2007 03:05:55:773PM | 1070320023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: fizzle about the same, maybe a little better. |
| Mar 20 2007 03:24:34:477PM | 1070320024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24: fizzle. Time for drastic measures, change rcur offset in seg1 |
| Mar 20 2007 03:34:11:757PM | 1070320025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: rcur from 1600 to 0. Bz turns around even more, but the current doesn't go up. It does hang around longer. Try going the other way on rcur offset, although Joe thinks this was better. |
| Mar 20 2007 03:49:02:380PM | 1070320026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: rcur to 2500 fizzle. Bz looks more normal, but the current is worse. couple of bounces. |
| Mar 20 2007 03:57:43:147PM | 1070320027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#27: back to rcur 0, lower gas. fizzle, no more current. |
| Mar 20 2007 04:09:51:990PM | 1070320028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#28: back to rcur 2500, lower ef4. lower gas? fizzle. Looks very similar. Actually, it didn't change rcur offset. |
| Mar 20 2007 04:22:24:117PM | 1070320029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#29: back to rcur 2500, lower ef4. fizzle. breakdown a little later, less current. Not as good as 26, which wasn't all that good. |
| Mar 20 2007 04:41:50:350PM | 1070320030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#30: TMX supplies didn't come on. Didn't get reset after the power room access to correct the heater fault. |
| Mar 20 2007 04:58:25:133PM | 1070320031 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#31: fizzle. Keeps the string alive. bounces up and out; gets to 40kA (including vessel current) mflux looks like Br is going positive; may be vertically unstable? Null doesn't look good anyway. Quit while we're behind. |

| Mar 20 2007 10:20:06:063AM | 1070320004 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 4: Try again to see if F15 fixed itself!? Still no breakdown. No EF2 and no Chopper current. No commutation on EF1L. F15 is still bad. |
