Overnight ECDC in D2. Hopefully it will stay on this time.

Gas setup:
----------
fill B-top 6psi D2 Hybrid Enabled(PG4)
fill B-side lower 1 psi Argon Hybrid Disabled (PG1)
fill B-side Upper as is, Hybrid Disabled (PG2)
fill B-main 40psi D2 Hybrid Enabled(PG3)
NINJA pumped out, Disabled

Power Systems as on 1070320029
Acoil +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot enabled

TORVAC pump gate valves open during pulse

Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming
no vacuum problems:
ECE, Z-bolo, VUV

ICRF setup: none.

Physop plan:
-------------

Get a plasma. Unless things are magically improved by overnight
ECDC, this will likely require some OH1 and EF3 voltage tweaks.
I may start with an intermediate rcur offeset, like 2000.

If Bob has zapped f11 put back MHD_STATIC_2003 as the static
shot for RECON_VAC to use for BR0, and recalculate the predictor.
Consider turning the f11 input on the in the hybrid and calling
those predictors too.

If possible, explore lower pg4 puffs, depending on sparker status.
Jim is planning to check this tonight.

Physop summary for Wednesday, March 21,2007
MP#298a C-Mod Startup
SL: Irby
PO: wolfe
EO: Pfeiffer, Pierson, Parkin, Fitzgerald

We succeeded in getting some plasmas, including a few
full length 800kA LSN discharges, and began the clean-up
process. The machine seems very dirty, but it was clearly
getting better over the course of the day. I spent a lot of
time trying to improve the startup, but it isn't clear whether
what I ended up with is really any better than what I started
with. Ian will have a better chance to compare tomorrow, after
some more clean-up.

The day got off to a promising start, with a short plasma on
shot#1. However, that was it (all fizzles and duds) until shot#17.
I did a lot of tweaking at the startup, including power supply
voltages (Oh1 and EF3). The successful shot#17 followed a change to
the Ef3 voltage pre-program which may actually have helped (or not).
Continued tweaking for the rest of the day, including some back and
forth that demonstrated a lack of reproducibility. Details are in the
logbook under Physics_Operator. At the start of the day I was trying to get
the plasma to take off and not run back inside, and by the end we were
getting outward going bounces and runaways. Best plasmas were 28, 31,
and 32, Best startup was probably the last one, 34, since it didn't bounce,
although the breakdown was a tad late and the plasma came to an early end.
It is probably worth noting that the IC_EF4 liked being between -1345 and
-1360, which is slightly more negative than historical best values, and
the Br0 offset started the day ok at 0, but seemed to do better later on
at -.5mT to -.7mT.

We ended up with eight plasmas, four full length and four shorter and
disruptive. The disruptions on shots#26 and 34 were characterized by saturating
Halpha signals, high resistance and increasing density, as if it were fueling
from somewhere. The full length shots had flat density with NL04 just over
the program value of 6e19, with the level lower on each shot, but never
dropping low enough to get the pg3 feedback to come on. Joe Snipes noted an
MHD mode (n=1, probably m=2) before the disruption on #26, using his new
Mirnov loops.

There were a couple of data system hangs today, including shot#25, the shot
that never was.

Before the run Jim Irby replaced the power supply on the sparker, and
we had no monitor signals from it all day. Maybe it was working. After
shot #17 we had a couple of duds, and I got back to fizzles by raising
the fill. Not at all clear if the duds should be blamed on the sparker
or just dirt from the plasma and disruption on #17.

One disappointment today is that Bob's zapping of the F11 feedthrough
connection seems to have been unsuccessful. Check_magnetics was
reporting baseline offsets in the 15-50mV range throughout the day.
However, all the other magnetics seem to be performing nominally.
No problems with any of the ones that Bob and Willy zapped on Monday
or with F15, which Bob zapped yesterday.

Set up for first shot-
Starting from 1070320031
  Zero pg2 in seg1 (that's a no-op, just for cosmetics)
Change rcur offset from 2500 to 2000
  ic_ef4 from -1345 to -1360
try to change br0 offset from -0.0000 to 0.0000, but it won't take it?
first change to 1.0e-6, then to 0.0000 and it does take it. All of this
   ought to be a no-op!

Observation about yesterday's voltages and currents (shot#31) compared
to 1060613015: iniital OH voltage demand is a little higher (~170V compared
to 100V, and there is an overshoot as well as a lag in the power supply
response. The overshoot recovery is probably related to the break in
slope increase in dBz/dt observed yesterday. This may not appear
if the current will just take off. The difference in demand is due
to the rcur P gain, and should vary with RCUR offeset, but I could
probably do better by slowing down the V_OH1 feedforward, which comes
up square at 100V; if I ramp that a little, I should help the overshoot
which is there in the old shot as well.

Currents are pretty much the same as they were in June, Bz is definitely
showing more positive at and before t=0, and I can't see why from the
currents. I've adjusted the EF4 current down to -1360 for the first
shot today to try to deal with this; alternative is to make IC_OH1 a little
more positive.

Base pressure is now (08:35) down to 4e-7. I may decide to ecdc for 15
minutes after the first attempt if it doesn't go.

Some changes were made to the sparker setup this morning, not sure what
to expect.

Bob has zapped f11, with apparently good results. I will most likely
want to start using it today, but not until we either start getting
plasmas or I get too frustrated not getting them.

Mar 21 2007 09:26:22:377AM1070321001Steve Wolfe
Shot#1: Base pressure at INIT=3.2e-7 (09:13)
plasma for a while, to .22sec.
F11 reports a baseline offset of 36mWb; Damn!
Big overshoot on Zcur position, looks like it hit something
at 27msec. The current never pauses though.
We get to 600kA, loop voltage is around 3V (EFIT)

Next shot: reduce pre-fill, drop Ip to 600kA

Mar 21 2007 09:40:30:143AM1070321002Steve Wolfe
Shot#2: pg4 to 17msec, Ip to 600kA
fizzle.
F11 looks ok this shot; keep an eye on it.
CIII signal is down, Zmeter is up, halpha burn-out is slower.
Bz looks a little negative before 10msec. Rcur moves in later.

Next shot: Just repeat before any more tweaking, see if it recovers.

Mar 21 2007 09:48:08:563AM1070321003Steve Wolfe
Shot#3: Repeat pg4 to 17msec, Ip to 600kA
base pressure was down in the 7e-7 again.
fizzle. CIII is up again, halpha even flatter.
zmeter signal is down.
Rcur moves in but almost holds it between 20 and 30msec
then snuffs.

Next: Slow down OH1_volt step at t=0+

Mar 21 2007 10:04:55:643AM1070321004Steve Wolfe
Shot#4: OH1 volt step slowed down to not get to 150V until
.008sec.
PG4 from 17 to 16msec.
fizzle. Mflux looks ok.
F11 reports 19mV baseline offset again; doesn't seem to be fixed.
Halpha still not burning out, I think it is riding the inner wall
There is a spike on CIII at .02 sec, zmeter just looks lumpy;
Zmeter update event is still not working.
OH1 voltage overshoot a little smaller, as intended, but the
Bz is still rising too fast. Maybe back off rcur offset?

Next: drop pg4 some more (until it duds?)

Mar 21 2007 10:14:07:720AM1070321005Steve Wolfe
Shot#5: drop pg4 from 16 to 14msec
Rcur offset from 2000 to 1500 (was at 1600 last year)
fizzle. Not helping.
CIII is higher, Halpha not burning out.
Current is still very low.
Next: assume it's gas/wall, drop pg4 again

Mar 21 2007 10:27:35:423AM1070321006Steve Wolfe
Shot#6: drop pg4 from 14 to 12msec
another fizzle. Something is still not right.
Could ecdc and/or reload #1; maybe I've wandered off
a sweet spot.

Rcur is looking better, current still not taking off.
CIII level is even higher, Halpha not burining out,
breakdown a little later, 7msec

Lower pressure not helping, try putting it back to 20msec
(counter-intuitive, but...)

Mar 21 2007 10:39:18:720AM1070321007Steve Wolfe
Shot#7: pg4 from 12 to 20 msec
still a fizzle. Halpha is up, CIII about the same
cyrrent trace basically overlays.
Breakdown is back at 5.8msec.

Next shot: reload seg1 from shot#1

Mar 21 2007 10:52:29:470AM1070321008Steve Wolfe
Shot#8:reload seg1 from shot#1 (undo all the voltage, rcur tweaks)
If this doesn't go, then ECDC for 15 minutes
Another fizzle. Current about the same, Rcur and bz moving in and
higher respectively. CIII level is a bit higher, lots of bumps and
wiggles.

Try ecdc for 15 minutes.

Mar 21 2007 11:24:01:393AM1070321009Steve Wolfe
Shot#9: Repeat of shot#8 after 15 minutes of ecdc
IGT= 2.0e-6 at INIT,1.5e-6 at PULSE
fizzle. CIII level is about half, Halpha similar,
zmeter is very low. Main difference is the pressure doesn't
pump out after breakdown. Current rise is still practically
nothing.

Repeat once, then do something (not sure what)

Mar 21 2007 11:33:40:220AM1070321010Steve Wolfe
Shot#10: Repeat once, then do something (not sure what)
ITG=8e-7 at INIT.
No better.

Raise pre-puff, then go back to the shot 7 program but at
higher pressure, then try to reduce the index.

Mar 21 2007 11:47:04:487AM1070321011Steve Wolfe
Shot#11: pg4 from 20 to 25msec
fizzle, no better. Tiny bit more current,
still going in, CIII level up again. breakdown at 7.3msec

Import seg 1 from shot 7, raise pg4

Mar 21 2007 11:59:20:987AM1070321012Steve Wolfe
Shot#12: Import seg 1 from shot 7, raise pg4 from 20 to 24msec
Expect this to fizzle, more or less like #7.
Check the flux plots, and decide what to tweak next.
fizzle, late breakdown, about 12 msec.
Didn't expect that.
Naturally, no update on vacbrbz this time. They are there though.
Bz is more negative, a bit.
Raise EF4 before I do anything else.

Mar 21 2007 12:14:25:847PM1070321013Steve Wolfe
Shot#13: Raise EF4 from -1360 to -1345
I'm not sure this is the right thing, might be
better to put rcur back up or V_oh1 and V_oh2's.
Give it a try, anyway.

Never went to init, apparently didn't see the state transition.
No Pat, no actmon activity, Web cycle says cycle not operating.
This is probably related to why I didn't get updates on some traces
last shot?

Went on through the cycle, it stored data, not sure from where.
Traces seem to be zeros, so it isn't the previous shot.

Logbook still not showing a cycle.

Mar 21 2007 12:31:03:033PM1070321014Steve Wolfe
Shot#14: Raise EF4 from -1360 to -1345
I'm not sure this is the right thing, might be
better to put rcur back up or V_oh1 and V_oh2's.
Give it a try, anyway, same as on shot#13 that wasn't.
Cycle restarted per Josh.

Still not getting Pat's voice, web logbook still not
showing that the cycle exists, but the actmon is running.

Got a fizzle. Sounded like everything went.
Breakdown is still late, 11-12 msec.
Bz did go up.

Next: drop the pre-puff back to 20msec?

Mar 21 2007 12:51:48:957PM1070321015Steve Wolfe
Shot#15: drop the pre-puff back from 24to 20msec
IC_EF4 back to -1360
Next thing will be to change BR0, but I'm not sure which
way to go because it really hasn't changed.
fizzle. Still a late breakdown. Lost the zmeter on that one.
Br0 to -.0005

Mar 21 2007 01:02:20:627PM1070321016Steve Wolfe
Shot#16: Br0 from 0 to -.0005
fizzle. breakdown is back to 5.6msec
No burnout. Back to tweaking voltages,
but I think maybe it's just dirty.

Mar 21 2007 01:19:26:520PM1070321017Steve Wolfe
Shot#17: Raise EF3 voltages by 300V before 20msec
2300->2600
2500->2800
2500->2800
2250->2550
Not sure if it can actually get as high as 2800.
plasma for 450msec
Startup actually bounced a little, then survived.
Current hesitation from 12 to 18msec around 38kA
then takes off. Zcur looks ok this time.

Density gets to about 8e19 (puff off), ECE shows 2.4keV and
sawtoothing, it diverts at about 250msec.

next: back to 800kA program

Mar 21 2007 01:29:19:627PM1070321018Steve Wolfe
Shot#18: Same startup program, raise Ip back to 800kA
dud. Fields look the same.
Maybe we lost the sparker? No way to tell.

Just repeat.

Mar 21 2007 01:37:30:957PM1070321019Steve Wolfe
Shot#19: Same startup program, raise Ip back to 800kA
Dud. OK, raise the fill.

Mar 21 2007 01:52:40:860PM1070321020Steve Wolfe
Shot#20: pg4 from 20 to 25msec
At least we got a fizzle back. late breakdown, around 10msec

next: drop br0 another .2mT

Mar 21 2007 02:11:23:737PM1070321021Steve Wolfe
Shot#21: br0 from -.0005 to -.0007
Another fizzle. breakdown at 5msec
Hardly any current. Doesn't actually look like
br went down. No sign of burnout,
zmeter is rising and CIII has big spikes (to .03 mW/cm2/ster)

Just for the hell of it, draw the rcur target further out.

Mar 21 2007 02:18:16:737PM1070321022Steve Wolfe
Shot#22: Draw rcur target in seg 1 to .65m
(was .63 and then moving out to .65), as long as the current
is so small, I don't believe this will do anything.
fizzle. Big bounce, maybe moved out?
Looked like it just go through a hesitation, like on 17,
then hit something at 20msec.

Try again, no more changes.

Mar 21 2007 02:34:13:910PM1070321023Steve Wolfe
Shot#23: repeat
 p[lasma full length. 1.8sec
800ikA, looking flat across.
Almost lost it in startup though,
it bounces outside at 28msec and moves
way in, but recovers (may not have been a bounce,
may have been a flake).
Still some hesitation between 10 and 20msec, not
as bad as on 17.

NL04 is flat at around 7.5e19, no puff (program is 6e19)
Loop voltage around 1.2V in flattop.

Next: Just repeat, it will fizzle for a while anyway.

Mar 21 2007 02:43:10:987PM1070321024Steve Wolfe
Shot#24: repeat
Fizzle, as expected. Broke down ok, 5.6msec
slid back in.

I notice that the chopper bias on 23 was low,
There seems to be a 100V program in seg2 for the
chopper voltage. Go ahead and change this to zero,
which I think is the right thing.

Mar 21 2007 03:01:01:410PM1070321025Steve Wolfe
Shot#25: Chopper voltage from +100V to 0. in seg 2
No startup changes.

Cycle problem again - NO POWER SHOT

Mar 21 2007 03:28:32:143PM1070321026Steve Wolfe
Shot#26: Chopper voltage from +100V to 0. in seg 2
No startup changes.
Plasma disrupted at .37sec.
Longer hesitation, started moving back in with out a
noticeable bounce or injection. Halpha signal is through the roof
during the shot, never got above 600kA.
Big runaway dump at 0.11sec or so. Loop voltage=2.5V
Injested a lot of something from somewhere. Some light
from the top before the disruption.

Mar 21 2007 03:35:23:270PM1070321027Steve Wolfe
Shot#27: repeat, see what happens.
fizzle, no surprise there.
Good early breakdown, about 5msec.
Hardly any current. Looks like the zmeter is having trigger
problems again.
Halpha not burning out, big lumps on the CIII signal.

Drop the fill back to 22msec

Mar 21 2007 03:52:10:597PM1070321028Steve Wolfe
Shot#28: pg4 from 25 to 22msec
Just noticed that the starting rcur in
seg2 is .645, while I've drawn .65 in seg1.
Of course, there is also the rcur offset in
seg1, presently 1500, so it probably wouldn't
match anyway. Need to check, but not for this shot
(already in INIT, I expect a fizzle anyhow).

But got a full length plasma instead! OK, I'll take it.
Slightly bouncy startup, but makes it.
Some injections during flattop, also some hards early.
NL04 just over 6e19, gas puff still not coming on.
Ramps all the way down.
It looks like there is a jump of about 3000A-m at seg
switch. Maybe I should put back the old startup rcur.

Mar 21 2007 04:04:52:207PM1070321029Steve Wolfe
Shot#29: Load rcur in seg1 from shot#17, before I changed it.
The final value was .648, so it shouldn't make any differrnce
at the transition. I just want to see if it actually
changes the startup at all.

Fizzle. Bounces on the outside, or a flake as it moves out.
This looks sort of like 22, which was after the rcur program
change in seg1. I think it made no difference.
Well, actually the breakdown was very late, around 11msec.

Next: leave it for another shot, see if I can make it to segment
switch and confirm the jump is the same.

Mar 21 2007 04:12:46:080PM1070321030Steve Wolfe
Shot#30: Repeat
Fizzle. breakdown at 8.3msec, still a little late.
Could be the rcur, could be recovering, give it one more try.

Mar 21 2007 04:33:37:267PM1070321031Steve Wolfe
Shot#31: Repeat
After some wait for a ef3L to cool.
plasma full length. ramps all the way down.
Breakdown back at 5msec, bounces outside
again, taking a small bite out of the current.
Similar to 28, but a little worse. Getting some
early runaways too. Possible marfe before 250msec
Density is still just above 6e19 with no gas after .13sec
Loop voltage is about 1.1V (EFIT). Ip at 0.1sec is 490kA,
compared to program of 500 (now). Jump in rcur error
at seg switch is similar to 28.

Next: raise ic_ef4 15amps, see if I can cure the bounce that way.

Mar 21 2007 04:42:13:627PM1070321032Steve Wolfe
Shot#32: ef4 from -1360 to -1345
Plasma, two in a row, but there were still runaways
The bolo and hards traces are delayed by about .8sec;
same as zmeter I think.
Still bounced on startup, No hesitation before the bounce,
which was also the case on 31. Breakdown just a little later, 5.6msec.
Injection around 1.0sec takes a bite from Te, not so much
on current.

Next: try raising pre-puff

Mar 21 2007 04:54:10:283PM1070321033Steve Wolfe
Shot#33: pg4 from 22 to 27msec
Hang in INIT, for about 3minutes
fizzle. breakdown late 7.4msec, moves in; too much gas?

Next: pg4 down to 24msec for last shot.

Mar 21 2007 05:15:15:703PM1070321034Steve Wolfe
Shot#34: pg4 from 27 to 24msec
plasma disrupted at .47sec, Halpha saturates again, sort of like
shot#26. NL04 rising to over 1.3e20, gas hard off.
Nice startup though, no bounce, no hesitation.
Both rcur and zcur look well-controlled. No lumps or spikes on
CIII or Halpha or zmeter. This is the nicest startup of the day,
although breakdown is a little late, around 7.5msec.
Loop voltage is over 2V throughout, current doesn't get above 700kA.

That's all for today.
