Engineering setup for Tuesday 27 March 2007

C-Mod has been up-to-argon to remove a leaking sparker at B-hor. A new sparker has been installed at B-Hor using the impurity injector 4-1/8" gatevalve. A new cable has also been fabricated with what we hope is better shielding.

The vessel was baked at 100 C and ECDC was run over the weekend to recover from the up-to-argon. The RGA indicates that the vacuum today is no worse than last Thursday evening or even early Friday morning. However, there may still be plasma cleanup work to do that will delay the start of the LH operation.

Several no-power cycle tests will be required, taken I hope, before 9:00, to make sure that critical systems are back on-line following the sparker noise attack last Friday. The condition of the ACCESS system should also be checked out.

Session leader summary for Tuesday, March 27, 2007 MP#298a C-Mod startup SL: wolfe PO: irby EO: the Bills (Cochran, Byford, Parkin) The run got off to a very late start, mostly due to data system problems but also because we were agonizing about the OH mis-control event last Thursday (1070322012). Dave Gwinn feels we should look into taking additional precautions to avoid a recurrence. Before taking any plasma shots we ran several cycle tests and power tests with PLC control on the OH's to convince ourselves that the new sparker arrangement was not generating similar noise problems. We also discussed possible additional hardware and software safeguards to be implemented ASAP. The first plasma shot was #11, taken around 1:30PM. This was a short, marfing, disruptive shot, not unlike 1070321001. It also produced a change in the sparker current , so we took another test shot to be sure things hadn't gone bad again. Shot #13 was a good full length LSN plasma, which actually called for some gas in flattop. We therefore went on to limited plasmas, continuing the program from last Thursday in an effort to clean/degas the inner wall. We ran ran several different settings of clearin, mostly staying marginally limited with some sharing to the lower divertor. The nl04 remained above 8e19, with no demand on the pg3 puff in flattop. We got ten plasmas under these conditions, all but one full length. Shot #17 disrupted with an injection, and the following shot fizzled. All things considered, a reasonably good run. Plasmas were reproducibly obtained, though the runaways could use some taming. The new sparker configuration seems to be working, with small but noticeable noise prodced when it arcs. The dozen total plasmas, 20sec total duration, should help with the cleanup. H/D is still high, 0.5

A new sparker (type I) was installed on B-Hor last night along with a
new cable. It performed well all day with about 180 uA of current at
t=0. Break-down time was very reliable, staying close to 5 ms all
day. The only adjustment "required" to startup today was a 10 Amp
drop in EF4 to bring down Bz0 following the disruption on shot 17 and
the fizzle on shot 18.

Generally the machine ran extremely well all day. The first plasma
was obtained on shot 11 lasting about 300 ms, which was followed by a
fizzle on shot 12.

The lower hybrid system was running into dummy loads early in the
C-Mod shot cycle at about 1.5 MW.

Problems
--------

The data system took much of the morning to be brought back into
operation. However, it appears that the upgrade has greatly improved
the speed of the data acquisition system. Initialization seems much
faster and well as data retrival (about 1.3 Gbytes of data/shot thus
far)

We took several no power shots today to verify that there was no noise
issue from the sparker on the Rogowski signals. We also took a couple
of OH only shots. No problems were found during these tests.
However, we did see glitches on the magnetics probably associated
with sparker tickdowns (typically one sample according to SMW).

TCI, particularly nl04, has some +-4e18/m^2 glitches generated when the CO2 counters are toggling between counts. I am not at this point sure why these glitches are showing up, but will investigate.

Shot#11: Another try at plasma. Short plasma, to .29sec, marfing and runaways. Strange spike on magnetics at .018sec f11 has a baseline offset, otherwise just a little spike on several loops and on Btor. Is it important? The spike at .018 is coincident with a sparker arc. There is also a sparker arc around -.0127, which does not seem to line up with additional noise on the magnetics at -.025 and -.011 (as seen at the dpcs inputs).

Shot#14: try for marginally limited plasma Looks like we got it. EFIT claims 3mm inner gap. NL04 is a little higher and the gas is off. Wide2 view shows a clear stripe in the inner wall, despite EFIT claiming it's still diverted. Jant view does look like there is a lot of flux to the divertor. (Auto update not working, may need to restart something after all the aborts this morning). Loop voltage is up about 100mV. Next: move it in some more.

There is also a sparker arc around -.0127, which does not seem to line up with additional noise on the magnetics at -.025 and -.011 (as seen at the dpcs inputs).

(Auto update not working, may need to restart something after all the aborts this morning). Loop voltage is up about 100mV. Next: move it in some more.
