LH startup and checkout MP 437 Begin in standard pure ctr 90 degree phasing disable CPS Establish operations at minimum of 100 kW 200 ms pulses (1-3 shots) Vary plasma density during pulse (ramp nel04 from ~0.4- 1.2 x10e20 (if possible) or if not adequate to trip CPS vary plasma position (outer gap) to verify CPS operation (trip annunciation) (1-3 shots) Reset CPS as necessary (requires cell access) If necessary repeat shot to verify CPS trip points (1-3 shots) Take shot with ctr 60-90-120 phase settings (1 shot) Reset toco phase (requires cell access) Take shot at -60, -90, -120 phase to verify symmetry of phasing in reflection co-efficient (1 shot) Add ICRF minimum pulse ~0.02 s , try different antennas power up to 1 MW ~5 shots Raise LH power in ~100 kW steps to maximum (10-15 shots)

Engineering setup for Wednesday 28 March 2007 MP 298a: Startup MP 473: Lower Hybrid Check-out and Initial Operation Session leader: Irby/Wilson Physics operator: Marmar ECDC overnight in D2, pressure=2e-4 Torr. Rmin/Rdwell/Rmax = 44/45/103 cm. Bake at 60 C. The run will start at 09:00 and end at 17:00. Power systems as on 1060727012. A-coil configuration: normal [Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled. Gas Setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) NINJA pumped out disabled Enable the following gate valves and shutters: ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters Torvac setup: Gate valves open during pulse. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ICRF Setup: None LH Setup: Plan to operate assuming all is well with plasma cleanup ___________________________________ Start from plasma like 1060727012 as lower hybrid target. This shot has special fizzle and invert settings to ensure OH ramping after the shot, even if Ip ramps all the way down.

The machine ran well today. There were a few data acquisition glitches early in the run, with some data loss, and one init hang (shot 5) leading to a no-power shot. A number of shots had significant early hard x-rays, all correlated with breakdown bounces. Tweaking the early gas and EF4 current bias may have helped. All but 2 of the shots that took off made it essentially all the way down. The first plasma of the day (shot 3) disrupted early. Shot 17 disrupted at end of flattop (1.5 seconds). Shot 21 had a giant marfe and high loop voltage; several supplies hit rails, and control was partially lost; it went double null near the end of flattop. Argon was puffed starting with shot 10. LH operated into plasma today, with net power up to 700 kW for short pulses and 550 kW for .1 s (shot 28). ICRF (D-port) was also tried on several shots, but did not get beyond short trips. By the end of the run, H/(H+D) was around 20%. Summary: Plasmas 22 fizzles 3 no power 3 Total cycles 28

Lowering power to 10kW per klys for next shot.
