Set mechanical phase shifters to 90deg co-current drive. Move launcher to 3mm behind LH limiter. Six short pulses (10ms) with 25% duty cycle at 200kW total FINT power. Scan phase 60, 90, 120 twice during each shot. Disable CPS if trips due to high reflection prevent operation. (Low power and short pulses will be safe without CPS, and we expect high reflection on some channels.) Shot 1) Start with equilibrium from 1060728023. Shot 2) Move plasma 5mm below 1060728023. We hope to see reflections on top/bottom change. We currently believe that we have good coupling on B/C rows but not on A/D rows. Moving the plasma vertically should make coupling better on the D row and worse on the A row. A more significant effect should be seen in the next shot. Shot 3) Move plasma 10mm below 1060728023. Shot 4) Take best result from shots 1-3, move upper x-point out in major radius by 5mm. Again, we expect this to impact the up/down assymetry in the reflection coef. Shot 5) Repeat shot 4 with x-point in by 5mm. Shot 6) Take best result from shots 1-5. Increase nl_04 to .5e20 m^-2. There should be a density 'sweet spot' for LH coupling. Shot 7) Increase nl_04 to .7e20 m^-2. Shot 8) Increase nl_04 to .9e20 m^-2. Shot 9) Increase nl_04 to 1.1e20 m^-2. If results from first 9 shots are favorable, move on to next step: Cell Access to move launcher to 2mm behind LH limiter. Repeat shots 1-9 with new launcher position, starting first with density scan, then varying shape. If time allows: Move launcher to 1mm behind LH limiter. Repeat shots 1-9 with new launcher position.

Shots 1-8 Continuation of Randy's MP 437. Did counter-current drive pulses at power levels up to 500kW coupled into the plasma. All shots ran smoothly up to this point. Shots 9-28 Took over from Randy as session leader for MP on LH coupling optimization. Started with equilibrium from 1070329023 and grill 3mm behind limiter. As expected, reflections were high especially for 90 and 120 degree phasing. Vertical position of lower x-point was incrementally moved to 10mm below original position, and upper x-point was moved out 4cm in minor radius, which resulted in a better fit of plasma to launcher shape. Density scan went well up to 1.2e20 m^-2 on nl_04, at which point we disrupted. Reflection coeffecients dropped dramatically for 90 and 120 deg phasing with increase in density. An attempt was made at changing the gains on the control system to prevent disruptions, but to no avail and disruptions and fizzles were par for the rest of the day. We moved launcher in to 2mm behind limiter for the last shot of the day, but a magnetics problem caused a strange (limited?) plasma shape with very high density on the outer wall. We may try some shots again tomorrow at 2mm behind the limiter as this is where we expect reflection coeffecients to really drop. Worthy of note is the sudden drop in density at the grill when the ICRF comes on at 1s during shot 25. This is a major concern with respect to operating D-port and LH at the same time. All in all, a good first (real) day as session leader. Thanks to Steve Wolfe and Ian Hutchinson for helping me figure out plasma shapes, and of course the entire LH team for their great work.

Summary The first two thirds of the run went well with perfect startup reliability. Shot 19 was a disruption, and things went downhill with lots of gas and fizzles following disruptions. On shot 21 we lost BP14_BC apparently but did not realize it. There was a VDE. We tried lowering the P gain as per Marco's calculation. It did not seem to help by the next time we got a plasma. But this was not a fair test because the magnetics may have been screwed. We only finally realized our magnetics problems on the last shot (28). It is not entirely clear how bad the magnetics really were for the last 7 shots.
